I saw them live round about '85. Very strong performance. One thing that amused me was when Midge Ure broke a string he just held out his guitar and someone came running on with a replacement. Another band I'd recently seen, The Home Service, had the same thing happen, and the rest of the band just kept jamming while he changed it on stage then did the wipe-the-brow gesture and took up where they left off! Quite the contrast.

Loved your reaction to a pivotal song for me....Billie Currie on violin and viola and piano and synthesizers, Warren Canne, drums, Criss Cross base and synth, Midge Ure vocals guitar keyboards.. Conny Planks production, layering sounds...as their fifth uncredited member, amazing...the whole album, absolute perfection, blends and flows from needle drop through to the end. When I first heard this song in 81 had to find the album....and my head exploded..first year college music/art major looking for something...pop/rock was corporate, punk didnt work for me...then this, classical instruments fused with electronic sounds, rock guitars and pulsing rhythm and drums...it was old, it was new, it was next. Started me on my journey flipping through albums in the record store racks. Found many great creative experimentiors, but none that matched Vienna and Rage in Eden. You might check out their Return to Eden concert of a few years ago..all still amazing, Midge Ure vocals still hit, Billie Currie moving from keyboard, to violin solo back to pitch modulating synth..

Love this song! Never came across your videos until now. Can I suggest maybe a split screen instead of the star? People not familiar with the video will get a better view. Also comment on the song after it’s done. Kills the flow with the stopping in between. Thank you !

Been a fan of ultravox since 1980 also saw midge ure on one of is stand alone concerts where I saw him and asked for is autograph and he did what a nice guy he is and I shook his and said thanks

Never has a car park in Rickmansworth looked quite so atmospheric ( used to work round the corner and hardly recognized it 😂) . The only song , certainly from the 80s that featured a viola solo in the middle ! The biggest travesty of the 80s was definitely this masterpiece being kept off the No1 spot in the charts for 3 weeks by Joe Dolce's novelty nonsense " Shaddap You Face " ( I can just about cope with John Lennon keeping it at No2 for the other week )

Yup the music charts were simply mental back then. A true reflection on what we were buying? I’m not sure about that but yea, should have gone straight to the top! That carpark though lol 🫡

Loved Ultravox. Been a long time since I have listened to them. My favorite song from them was Hymn. Thanks for playing them and bringing back memories from my youth.

The band had to fight Chrysalis to even release this as a single. Coming in at 4'52, it was certainly NOT a three minute pop song! The night scenes with the horse were filmed in Covent Garden and the 12" B-side had 'Passionate Reply' and 'Herr x' (narrated by drummer Warren Cann) which was the German version of the album track Mr X. This album was recorded in Cologne and produced by Conny Plank. One of the bands' B-sides was titled 'Face to Face' and (I suspect) plagiarises a German band called Neu! You queried the instrumental break: Billy Currie plays both piano and double-tracked Viola.

You will eventually get to their musical cousins and grandfathers like Kraftwerk (if you're not too hung up in understanding the lyrics, go for the German originals, the words flow better) [Man-Machine/Die Mensch-maschine: The Model/Das Model, Neonlights/Neonlicht for starters.], firt Ultravox incarnation member John Foxx's Metamatic album and Tubeway Army/ Gary Numan. Have a great journey!
