Hunter-gatherers and agricultural societies lacking transcendental thought systems were in no position to respond to the Western challenge. Old World civilizations that had both the material surplus and cognitive abilities produced three responses to the rise of the West. Core sates of these civilizations, in their efforts to catch up with the West, suffered revolutions. Non-core states that lacked the revolutionary energy enacted reforms with mostly unsatisfactory results. Indian response to the West has been repression of its minorities. Being a cleft civilization, it craves inner coherence as a prerequisite to modernization and world power status.

Syed Sardar Ali is one of the best historians. His lecture about the reality of colonial rule really opened my eyes. I used to believe that we are poor because of colonialism. Really impressive personality. It really shook me to the core. I've watches all of his lectures. Respect from India.

1:28:05 being from India, I would like to answer the question. Why did India progress inspite of the dominant ideology being Hindutva? Modi was not elected to the government on basis of Hindutva. He was elected due to the Gujrat Model and his pro-industrial stance. BJP has done tremendous work in making India better for business. BJP has also done excellent work in infrastructure development. The Hindutva narrative was not popular before BJP came into power. Also, many outsiders fail to understand the psyche of a common Hindu. Most young Hindus do not believe in the idea of a God very rigidly. They like to follow Hinduism as a culture (or a way of life). Some identity as Hindu in the sense of ethnicity and not in the sense of metaphysical beliefs. Most Hindus are sceptical about their belief system but they will get offended if someone from outside will criticize Hinduism. So there is a sense of togetherness in Hinduism without a centralised belief system.

A gem scholar of history. He has very lucidly presented broad developments around the world. I wish all this could have been compiled in a book preferably in English for a wider audience in the Muslim world

I applaud Mr. Sardar Ali for his brilliant analysis of this situation. However, he confounded culture with civilization. There is only one civilization, the Western Civilization. Modernization is very vague term. Soviet Union called their system modern and scientific communism. Only when Soviet Union and China adopted the Western civilization, could they become successful. If the word, 'West" is left out, Muslim world will never catch up. Muslims need to be pro-West and that is the way they will change their mindset toward modernization. There is no other way. As a Bangladeshi, I will say that is the way Pakistanis can improve like they did during Westernized President Ayub Khan 's the 1960s era with British trained civil servants and other technocrats.

Stop saying Baresagiir Pak o Hind, there is no Pakistan before 1947. u must call Sub Continent as Indian Baresagiir. Indian civilization is more than 5000 year old and don't forget roots.

Excellent lecture and discussion! Pakistan has a long way to go and that is only if we are serious about the future and start taking steps now! First do not interfere in the neighboring countries and establish peace with all of them! Focus internally and clean the country of these jihadi groups and make religion a personal matter! Reduce defense budget by at least by 20% and spend that money on quality and modern education, the education that can produce kids with critical thinking tolerance and respect for all and it will take at least 30 years if we start now! Time is running out for Pakistan do it now! Forget “Madinay ki Rayasaat” and look to the future modern tolerant peaceful Pakistan will justice for all…….😊
