That was just beautiful raw talent being performed! Bobbie died on 11-5-2003 @ 63 yrs. 20 yrs ago tomorrow. So long ago yet he lives on so strongly thru his music especially Unchained Melody. The incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. This greatest (Live) performance done on the Andy Williams Televison Show (58) years ago back in (1965). Was so good that it became the quintessential version of them all. Every recording artist and orchestra has used this arrangement of "Unchained Melody " ever since. No one has sung this song better than Bobby Hatfield and no orchestra has performed this song better than the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show. It has become the greatest live television performance by a singer and orchestra ever. Brilliant!

So many people comment on the size of the microphone on this one lol. if today's technology is s great why are the microphones big today? probably because they have too much technology in them...remote mics sending signals to the PA board, and auto tune and AI, , all squeezed in to the mic lol.

He didn't need a big microphone. He didn't need anything to help his voice. In fact he had a cold. If you watch the video where you can see Andy Williams with them (they were on his show), when Andy Williams asks about how they got their name, you can hear the congestion in his voice. He not only sang the heck out of this song he sang it with a head cold to boot.

I'm pretty sure The Andy Williams Show was recorded in color on videotape, it was broadcasted on NBC, which led CBS and ABC in color programming. Being the leader in color programming, it used and still uses The Peacock (representing color) in its network logo. Your video source has been processed and maybe not as well as could be currently, but it was still recorded originally in color. Bobby Hatfield's beyond belief recorded live performance is probably one of the most reacted to and viewed videos on KZfaq. :)

They didn't "colorize" it; it was filmed in color - I believe there's a difference. He was actually wearing a pink/salmon jacket. I think they might have amped up his "tan" a bit, or the camera exaggerated it, but his eyes were just that blue. Yes, they had color wayyyyyyyy back in '65!

The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired Oct 25, 1965 - [ ] Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

“Unchained Melody” is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. •Though many think vocalist Bobby Hatfield sang in falsetto (he didn't) - he sang in a pure tenor on many Righteous Brothers tracks (with Bill Medley) & will always be remembered for his solo turn on their classic “Unchained Melody.” •They each had the vocal talent to perform as soloists. Medley sang the low parts with his bass-baritone voice, with Hatfield taking the higher-register vocals with his tenor. His voice reached the register of a countertenor.
@philtil89778 ай бұрын
My information is that this broadcast was made in color; no? Also if you are interested, most voice coaches I have heard reference this live show agree that his voice was not sung in falsetto, that was Bobby's natural range! I am old! I saw this live on Andy William's show back in 1965! It has been my all time favorite song ever since that night! Bobby's Mother was in the audience, and he was kind of nervous because it was her first time seeing him actually perform on stage! For many years I really thought no one would ever do this song better! Elvis, my all time favorite male vocalist, came close just before he died but fell short (maybe because he was very sick at the time)! Then in 2015 I was watching an interview of Angelina Jordan on Norwegian TV where she did a short version of Unchained Melody. I said at the time that she would some day set the NEW gold standard for this song! Friends thought I was crazy because of the hundreds of covers since Bobby's cover no one, and especially not a female, had come close to Bobby! A few weeks ago, and at 81 years old, I was down to only 2 things left on my life's bucket list! 1 - to see Angelina Jordan perform live, and 2- to hear her do Unchained Melody better than anyone had ever done it! On the night of Sept. 22 2023 the impossible happened! I had to travel 3000 miles, but I was setting in the Historic Music Hall in Portsmouth NH watching Angelina perform; and she started singing Unchained Melody!! She slowed it down and put more emotion into the song than anyone had ever done! Both my last two items were happening at the same time!! I cried like a baby from the joy of what was happening! I, and I believe, everyone that was there that night will agree Angelina set the new GOLD STANDARD THAT NIGHT FOR THIS SONG!!!

At that time, Bobby was suffering from an upper respiratory infection, the 3 of them talked before he sang & he was huffing & puffing a bit, like he had ran up a flight of stairs. Bobby also suffered from extreme stage fright, losing his lunch before going on stage. If all that wasn't enough, his mother was in the audience, watching her 25yo perform live for the very 1st time and he was very worried about disappointing her. I think it is safe to assume that no one on the continent was disappointed with his masterful rendition. @marymichael1211 His singing partner Bill Medley later said that they had agreed to do one solo piece each per album. Both wanted to do 'Unchained Melody' for their fourth album, but Hatfield won the coin toss. It was originally released as the 'B' side of the single 'Hung On You'. However, that song failed to interest radio DJs, who instead chose to play the 'B' side.Getty. There is uncertainty over who produced the song, as Phil Spector took the credit on many tracks and 'B' sides that were actually produced by Bill Medley. Hatfield made a change to the song during the recording sessions. He initially recorded a couple of takes as it was written, but returned later, changing the melody for the "I need your love" line in the final verse, singing it much higher. I don't THINK that was colorized, I'm pretty sure that was transmitted in color even though a lot of TVs were black and white then. Some shows were in color and others were not. Check out both 'brothers' singing You'll Never Walk Alone!

If you go to the original recording with Andy Williams the color is perfect because the show was televised in color.

Not colorized, there was a fair number of TV shows that were broadcast in color in the 60's.

This wasn't colorized. During the transition between B&W and color TV, pink was the 'safe' color that worked well in both systems. BTW, the Addams Family was primarily painted in various tones of pink. These came across in clean gray tones.

I don't think the video was "colorized". There was color TV in the mid-1960s (not everyone had a color TV) and films had been in color since the late 1930s.

It was in color to begin with the tape is just old. There is a better version on here that includes an introduction and some funny banter with the "brothers" and someone did a good job of restoring the color so the guys aren't orange.
