I would highly recommend the How to Train Your Dragon series! I’m a former classroom teacher. I taught K-2 SPED and when I was moved to 3-4 SPED I spent a ton of time listening to as many early chapter books as possible so I could better recommend books to my students. I listened to the first book on audiobook and it is the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. So much so that I ended up listening to the whole series as an adult just for the fun of it. They’re read by Scottish actor David Tennant. The movies are very different with almost no similarities besides character names. Any child I think would enjoy them but particularly boys. I would recommend listening to the audiobook and following along with a physical copy. There are tons of silly illustrations located on every page. Can’t recommend it enough :)

Did you start out saying your kids “can’t even read”? Your oldest are 6&7? This is incredibly encouraging! We hear so many well-meaning moms talk about their children reading young (young!). My oldest is 5 and I was feeling like maybe he should be able to read at least some, but he just isn’t there yet. Sometimes it feels very difficult to determine even a general sense of where “average” is.

Kids take their own time in everything There is no need to worry. My daughter started talking only at the age of 4. I was so worried...cried alot. But believe me..now she speaks fluently ...makes me proud😊😊😊 Same goes with reading or studying. She is very good in some subjects but struggles with other. I don't worry anymore. Because i know she is just waiting to suprise me😉

@@sanaabdulhameed3476 I had to chuckle at your comment. My son didn't talk to age 4 either. I remember how proud I was when he got in trouble for talking too much in school at age 7 LOL

Yep that is what I said! My 7 year old is really close to being independent with his reading - so he is reading just not on his own! As for my 6 year old, she was not interested when she was 5, so we went back to pre-reading activities for another 6 months and I tried again - she was more receptive at 5.5. So that is when we started All about reading level 1 and we are working slowly through it!

We use hoopla and Libby (both free library apps) for audiobooks but I just signed up for a free trial of Audible specifically to get the Anne of Green Gables audiobook narrated by Rachel McAdams! We are listening to it every time we are in the car with my 4 and 5 year old and we are LOVING it. The other day I got to have a discussion with my 5 year old (started by him!!) about why Anne didn’t want to go back to school after Gilbert teased her for the first time.

Several of these are on my list to read to my kids at some point, like Poppy, The Water Horse, The Tale of Despereaux, Nathanial Fludd, and The Frog Princess. My daughter loves the Zoey and Sassafras books! She has us read them over and over. She has also gotten into listening to audiobooks. She enjoys the Princess in Black audiobooks.

Okay I need more info on how you do audiobooks. When/how and what does it look like? My 4 kids (11,9,6,4) are rarely in the same room and never quiet, so I can't wrap my head around how to do audiobooks. We do a lot of read-alouds though, but we are constantly interrupted by one thing or another. Love your book recommendations!

For science/nature, we have loved Among the Pond People (Meadow People, Forest, etc). We read those aloud and then my son listens on audio. Also, the Thorton Burgess stories like Adventures of Danny Meadow Mouse or Adventures of Buster Bear, etc. Those are a daily audiobook choice. He also loves the Boxcar Children stories on audio.

My daughter LOVES the Ramona Quimby and Henry Huggins collections on audiobook. I find Ramona a bit bratty, and to be honest she has lost listening privileges because she imitates Ramonas bad behavior, but this series started her absolute love of audiobooks. My second recommendation is the Gooney Bird Green series. The books are good, but the audiobook is AMAZING! So much fun!

My daughter really liked the Hilde cracks the case series. She really likes mysteries. They are in the scholastic branches line, so a little more simple, but not quite read alone level for us yet. There were some instances of mild bullying by older kids, but overall were really cute and age appropriate. They had 2 sisters working together, which I really liked.
