One thing young people often don't realize is that segregation had recently ended when this song was written. So the lyrics "this is the law throughout the land" and "a dance of liberty" are referring to the joy people felt when segregation was over, and black and white children were coming together in school. Of course there was all sorts of conflict too, but the song is one of celebration.

Having lived during that era, I can tell you there was a genuine desire to bridge the racial divide. Don't overthink the lyrics...it means what it is saying....people are different but together we can live in peace. We need to bring this simple message back

What makes this song pretty incredible is that it was originally written in 1954 and first recorded in 1956, in the wake of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 that outlawed racial segregation in public schools. I consider Three Dog Night's version to the be the definitive version, but that this was on the radio in 1956 is pretty incredible. There's a verse to this song that they didn't include in this version - "Their robes were black, their heads were white, The schoolhouse doors were closed so tight, Nine judges all set down their names, To end the years and years of shame."

I never knew this, now I have to go check on this and try to find the early version. Found it, search for "Black and White" sung by Sammy Davis Jr. In 1957. A Pete Seegar song.

this was written to celebrate 1954 Supreme Court Ruling that segregation in schools is illegal. They had 3 great singers and put on a good live show.

They were bringing together to the front of the congregation. The love that people can have it doesn't matter the color. As elvis presley said the same god that created you, created me.

The point here I think is that we are all together & that we really can't have one without the other. Ink is NOT very helpful on its own, NEITHER is a blank white page. It is ONLY when they COME TOGETHER can anything good be achieved! Also - they basically set it up that we can't & don't have one WITHOUT the other. It is NEVER ONLY day, NOR is it EVER ONLY night - even in the most Northern or Southern climates. In fact there WOULD BE A LOT OF PROBLEMS if we only had the one WITHOUT the other. Nothing grows in pure darkness. There are problems sleeping (which then affects thinking & productivity) when you have ONLY light. I LOVED singing & dancing to this song when I was a VERY young, little white girl, along with my best friend - who was a little black girl. Love from Canada.

When this group performed this song, they along with other groups of that time were trying to get out a message that we all need to grow with and love another. But those messages fell on deaf ears. And here’s what I’m talking about. This song was written in 1955 and first performed by Pete Seeger in 1956. Almost a decade before MLK. Three Dog Night took this song and made it popular. You could say that they were following in MLK’s footsteps with music a decade later. Peace and love be with you my brethren.

I was a freshman in high school when this was released. Totally missed the meaning and not because my dad was racist. He was, but it's my fault I missed it. I learned quickly the value of all humans.

IT WAS OUR HIPPIE MOVEMENT OF THE LATE 60's EARLY 70's TO TRY AND UNIFY MANKIND. TEACH EVERYONE THAT WE'RE ALL THE SAME , TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER IN PEACE. OUR CHILDREN WERE TO BE OUR NEXT TEACHERS TO CARRY THIS LESSON FORWARD. SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF PARENTS DROPPED THE BALL ON THAT ONE .
