The Graceling series by Kristin Cashore is a fantastic choice for young adult readers. I think adults would like it too, especially you. It was ahead of its time, particularly in how it presents strong female leads. If you appreciate narratives centered around powerful and complex women, you'll likely enjoy these books.

I recently bought some undies because mine are old too. Plus my cat is so funny - he likes to play with freshly washed underwear while I'm putting clothes away so I gave him his own pair to play with while I put away laundry. They had a hole in them and they're the ones he picked out to play with so.. yeah. He rubs his face on them and gets himself wrapped up and stuck in them. It's so cute. Every time I do laundry, "Here's your panties!"

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is portal fantasy, so book one reads urban fantasy, book two is full high fantasy. I didn't like the romance, but the story and writing style/imagery of the authour I loved. Her second series is much better quality. Her short story collection is the bit I could see you enjoy the most in terms of style/story, despite being short stories. But I completly agree with you, I think if I had read them now for the first time instead of 10 years ago I probably wouldn't have enjoyed them as much.

I have read both Strange the Dreamer and Daughter of Smoke and Bone and I still prefer Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Kind of an unpopular opinion, and I still loved Strange the Dreamer but Daughter of Smoke and Bone was just so atmospheric to me, the depiction of war, the consequences on civilians, that there are no real winners, was just so well done. Really love the entire series, and although it's based around a romance, I love that it's not romance heavy.

@@rosaliemusicals I like Daughter of Smoke and Bone better as well, it's one of my favourite series! I connected more with the characters, story and world. Like you mentioned, I loved how well it portrayed that there are no real winners in a war, and how everyone feels like they are the hero. But I do think for a technical point, Strange the Dreamer is better written, plotted and paced. Also if you love her atmosphere and haven't checked out her short story collection, please do, I think you'll love it!

My cat used to chew on my furniture and ripped a massive hole in the lining on the underside of my big chair. I used to shove stuff under there, try to block it off, do everything I could to keep him out. Eventually I decided to stop fighting him and accepted that it was his furniture now and I let him crawl up in the lining. He eventually dragged cheap blankets up in there and created a nest. Once he had his "man cave" in the chair where he could hide or nap or loudly chase his own tail, he stopped being as destructive with the rest of the furniture. Fingers crossed Charlie calms down soon! 😂

Yes it's starts out with teenagers and teenager stuff but once you discover the world around it, it is so so so good. Also I just read Graceling recently and LOVED it, I haven't read the rest of the series but it was so great, very "walking and camping" fantasy. Such a shame you have DNFed it. There was a brilliantly done BBC TV adaptation of The Thirteenth Tale made about 10 years ago that is definitely worth watching, even when you already know the twist. If you liked her style, I highly recommend reading Once Upon a River, which is also by Diane Setterfield. It features a young girl who drowns in the Thames but miraculously comes back to life, but the plot deliberately meanders like a river, and it's very much written in that Victorian gothic style.

Aww man I wish you’d give Helm of Midnight a second chance. The audiobook is great and it’s definitely a murder mystery (almost Jack the Ripper-esc) in a very cool fantasy world. It’s gone some of the best queer representation and the discussions around depression are so good.

My cat does the thing too where he lays on his back under the bed and uses his claws to drag himself along. I had a cat that once got into my box springs and laid in it like a hammock in between the slats. It was so cute. I'd go to look for him and I'd see a big bulge under my bed. It was already old so I didn't mind.

I fear the day you actually pick up The Amulet of Samarkand because the characters in that trilogy have a great arc but it’s YA so idk if you’ll end up liking it at all.

Omg the stories of your cats! I have 2 a F2 Savannah cat so a hybrid who is has become more dominate peeing on stuff since we got the baby boy Sora. He’s our favorite he’s so sweet and social but they are both a menace! They knock on the doors at 4-5 am 🤦🏽‍♀️ I’ve had to make cat proof / water proof covers for our furniture. And can’t let the female gwen in any of the bedrooms. UGH 😩 ugh such a pain but we love them regardless don’t we! I threaten will leave her outside with the coyotes but of course- I won’t. 🤣

Personally the teenager romance didn’t bother me, but I think it’s probably because I work with kids and appreciate young characters actually acting their age in books for once! Sometimes authors don’t have their teenage characters act like teenagers and it drives me crazy!

My kitty is 7 and unfortunately still does the attention seeking tactics and also wakes us up whenever she feels like it. She wakes my husband up every morning like 5-10 minutes before his alarm, he gets so mad 😂 I do hope they grow out of it but mine has not. It’s cute but also annoying 😂

The daughter of smoke and bone changes a lot after book one, it's a lot more high fantasy focused on war and sacrifice and trauma and the romance is a lot more grown up and has depth to it, it also becomes a lot darker in themes, if you can manage book 1 the other 2 are worth it in my opinion

I read 13th tale last year (spoilers) The first 20٪ was 5☆, but I did get fairly annoyed with it over time. The past timeline was annoying to me bc rhey used their money to let the twins do whatever they wanted, and rather than seek help let the house and family rot. Grief and regrets are painful but the father destroying generations bc he let it consume him was very selfish and cowardly. (It was a book club book and I was the only one who that bothered that much)

Woman picks out a 400-page classic and says it's too long. Chooses a longer book instead: so me. 🙋‍♀️ Woman doesn't like the book she picked and picks out numerous other ones to choose from even though she describes this as cheating: sooo me again. 🙋‍♀️ 😂 This is so real!! ❤

Cats.....like ....why do people keep them? 😂 All they do is wake you up in the middle of the night, ruin furniture, make things fall to the ground, and scream when they want attention.....like why?? I have three dogs, sure I walk and train them during the day, but they don't wake me up, or do anything. And they sleep by my feet as I read. Get a dog!! :)

The second half of Daughter of Smoke and Bone is *so* much better. It's not really about her ex at all. The other two in the series take the story to other worlds. Bummed that you didn't enjoy it, but I also understand. There is some mild-cringe in the first half. Also, side bar, I really think you should DNF Lux by Jennifer L. Armentrout. It's the most YA of YA. Painfully cinge.

If I remember correctly Daughter of Smoke and Bone would end up in a fantasy world, but I didn't like this or Laini Taylor's other series Strange the Dreamer. It is too much Romance for my taste and all the romance is mostly love at first sight and when it gets to the romance the story just stops and it is all flowery language about love there on. Totally not my taste.

There's stuff called repellent spray, no chew spray, deterrant spray - names like that. Looks like a pet store might be the place to look for that kind of thing. A possible home remedy might be a mixture of 1:1 apple cidar vinegar and water, sprayed on the parts of the furniture you want them to avoid. Avoid essential oils, those are unhealthy. The idea is to find something that the cat doesn't like the smell or taste of, so that they are no longer keen to bite the piece of furniture with the spray on it.
