Hey Tim. I bought a 2020 tundra platinum and saw the cooler indicated on the sales sticker. Sounds like Toyota needs to recall all the 2019 and 2020 tundras and get the cooler installed. If the temps are better with the cooler then why not have it. Its added protection for the transmission. I think all of us need to call our state AG or the U.S. AG and have them investigate this under consumer protection. Toyota falsely advertised for something the truck didnt have and the dealers didnt even know. Smells like a class action lawsuit to me and I am on board!!!

My recommendation everyone is to have your transmission fluid change if you are currently towing or think you will be towing. Amsoil makes some of the best transmission fluid as well as oil for our tundra. The ATF fluid is designed for high temps and severe use which will combat the fluid breakdown. Also i am looking into aftermarket transmission coolers for the tundra if toyota doesnt remedy this issue.

The owner needs to contact Toyota and inform them that the sticker states it has a transmission cooler and they better put one in. They can correct the issue for me now or deal with my attorney and the FTC. There are problems when the vehicle doesn't match the sticker. Government problems.

I experienced the same issue Received this warning light HIGH TRANSMISSION TEMP FLUID after 3 hrs on the road with no load ( just me and my wife). I made complain to Toyota USA and got case number. have my vehicle checked by local dealer. Mechanic drove the vehicle for 30 mins - tested - no issue found. Keep In mind I told them the warning light illuminated after 3 hrs. What we need to do is call Toyota USA let them know you’re experienced with high temp to the transmission once they received enough complaints from consumers then hope they will look at this issue and come out with Service bulletin. Having boiling hot oil 250 - 280 degrees feeding the components without cooling system that’s just bad engineering in my book.

Great video Tim .. again that answer from Toyota is b.s .. they try and blame the warning light on a faulty sensor ... Come on .. really !? Plus the Toyota fluid is a semi synthetic . Which will degrade even quicker with high heat like this .. so long story short . Yes nothing bad will happen right now at such a low mileage ... But these increased trans temps will definitely shorten the life span of the fluid and if fluid changes are not done more frequently it will overall shorten the life of the transmission . With my 2019 I have been proactive and retrofitted my truck with a external trans cooler . Now my trans temps hold steady around 200 degrees while towing my 7000lb travel trailer . Tundra owners need to know that there is a solution to this problem . You can easily install Toyota parts to have a real trans cooler again .

Ok as a Tundra owner with an old 2008 TRD Supercharger (and other performance upgrades, crank/flywheel horsepower around 650bhp and 700lb ft torque, also is 4x4 Crewmax SR5 w/towing package AND external transmission cooler, I've burnt two transmissions mainly from just having too much horsepower to not hurt the unmodified transmission but when I've had issues the cooler lines had trash, debris blocking or obstructing flow to the cooler (located very front of condenser/radiator/Supercharger intercooler/and approximately 8"x14" offset to my passenger side) since having my problems I've researched and have had several guys say they've even added ANOTHER external cooler either piggybacking the factory installed unit or remove the OEM cooler for a larger cooler. Most has both still as I do IN ADDITION to having "pinned the transmission thermostat in the open position." The info to do this can easily be found on the internet. These transmissions are VERY sensitive to high temps and the temps shown here on an unloaded truck while driving normally at highway speeds is WAYYY higher than should be. My truck wouldn't see 190 to 200°F while pulling 6k pounds! Why did Toyota stop including this inexpensive but important component, this cooler only runs $125-200 for an aftermarket cooler that's much larger than the factory cooler. The cooler is the life blood of your expensive 6-speed auto and with a brand new truck I do not recommend adding a cooler but MAKE TOYOTA replace as many as possible until they recall the trucks and add coolers! One can't just add a cooler without the sending line and routed through radiator, return line back to the transmission (without an external cooler there's no "lines" to connect it to! Toyota must run those lines and honor the warranty. *I would recommend "pinning" your thermostat but remember to take 2 minutes to pull the pin before going in for service while under warranty! My 12 year old truck can tow a lot, as long as it's not overheating it'll last, I live in south Louisiana and it's brutally hot right now. I have also upgraded my radiator to an all aluminum radiator because another cheap but critical component that will start leaking at the plastic after 5 or so years. I'd save my breath with the Stealerships and get extended warranty and save the paperwork and document everything, the thing that will ultimately need to be decided is to either keep replacing a transmission or simply add a cooler and the lines to send/return fluid. I'm pretty surprised this happened, it's not a secret these transmissions have shown to be highly sensitive to overheating or heat in general. Hopefully if you've read all of this and have any questions or want further elaboration email me Safetypete1@gmail.com and I'll gladly show you what my cooling system looks like, how to pin the thermostat in 5 minutes for $0.25 or I can send you to the sites and groups who know more about this than myself. This is a headscratcher bigtime.

If it's approaching 250 in town it certainly would be over 280 while pulling 9000 lbs up a grade. Second, full life of transmission is available when operated under 200 degrees. At 220 degrees life is cut in half. Maybe new synthetic transmission fluid will not break down until 280, but what about everything else in there? In any case, I would spend the $ to get an aftermarket transmission cooler added. I like to keep my vehicles past 150k and transmission replacement is so darn expensive.

@@Pickuptrucktalk Yes but the owner's concern was the warning on the dash comes on. That warning appears when transmission temperature is above 302F. The excuses given was that there must be a sensor problem. Easy to diag, test the pan temp with a IR temp gun. The reason for the removal of the transmission cooler was because of a design change. In 2019 Toyota started using R1234YF for freon instead on R134A. Because the new feon is not as efficient in cooling the condenser on the 2019-20 Tundra had to be increased in size. The 2018 Tundra has the transmission cooler integrated into the condenser but they couldn't do this with the new feon because it's not as efficient and the AC would not cool effectively. Cheapest solution after some testing was just not run a cooler and have the "warmer/cooler" heat exchanger do the job of cooling the transmission. Full disclosure, I'm a Toyota technician.

Lucky my 2017 Sequoia has the thermostatically controlled cooler. I just towed my 6300lb trailer 6 hours straight with the ambient temp being 35°C. Temp gauge for the trans and engine never moved and I was giving it hell up the hills with the A/C blasting too. Still impressed with it every time I tow. My wife primarily drives it because I have a company car and she absolutely loves it too.

I have a 2010 Sequoia with the tow pkg that has the trans temp gauge as well. Loaded, unloaded, towing a trailer in the mountains of WV with full throttle pulls as long as 5-7 minutes at a time in 90 deg temps with AC running and have never seen the gauge even twitch past it's normal position. I don't know what the actual temp is, but whatever it is, it doesn't change perceptibly regardless of ambient temperature or load. I had a 2008 Tundra that made the same journey many times- no tow pkg- with no issue whatsoever, and traded it with 212,000 zero issue miles for the Sequoia, which is now pushing 200K- also zero issues. Basic maintenance. Period. Clearly there is an issue with the new trucks if they are getting trans temp warnings, and agree with everyone saying Toyota needs to install a cooler. Never had an issue before, now they do.

Toyota needs to tell us the number. While snow plowing, I've always kept the trans temp gauge showing on my GM trucks. I was always told that you should start watching it at 200, slow it down at 225 and shut it down (idle) well before anything close to 300. I realize they're different manufacturers and I have a lot more faith in Toyota's products, and they claim to be using a hi-temp fluid, but a 500 degree trans temperature redline? No way! This issue is keeping me from buying a Tundra. I wish they would resolve it. It is, however, good to learn from this video that there is at least a trans temp sensor and a warning screen!

Here is my thought. I have a 2021 Tundra and I'm about to start pulling a 32' RV. Not often but a pull is a pull. This week I've ordered all of the items to install a transmission cooler to be safe. However, the thermostat on the new part (after the pin is pulled) is rated at 250 degrees (I'm told). So if the thermostat doesn't open until 250 degree then what is the use of the transmission cooler if it will hardly ever open up to cool? In my case I'm pulling the max combined at nearly 16k lbs between the truck weight and the rv weight. I'm sure my transmission is going to get pretty darn hot and need that cooler. If I wasn't pulling this big rv then well I probably just ordered a fancy part that would likely stay closed most of the time. I've also been told to not pull the thermostat pin and let the fluid flow all the time. Being in South Texas that is probably what I'm going to do unless someone give me good logical reason to use the 250 degree thermostat.

Just trust Toyota ;) It only took them 3 years to figure out they pinned the turn signal bulbs incorrectly. I'm sure that REMOVING the cooling system from the transmission and trying to use the EXISTING warmer as a heat exchanger had all of our best interests at heart, they just forgot to update the window sticker (and left it in the towing section of the window sticker when we weren't getting a cooling upgrade over the base models), and forgot to lower the prices too. Seriously, they need to do another recall and put an actual cooling system back on the truck (at a minimum on the ones with towing packages). People should feel ripped off by Toyota on this one, so much for looking out for the customer. Toyota's core values state "We are a company driven by imagination, experimentation, humility, respect and innovation. And we believe it is people, our people, who will go the extra mile to deliver to our customers all that Toyota promises to be, today and into the future. It's about integrity."
