Harry didn’t get mad when Draco called Hermione a mudblood because he didn’t know what the word meant since he grew up with muggles. Ron and the twins are purebloods so they knew what that word meant. The next book is a game changer when it comes to the reading level/themes of the series. The first two books are considered middle grade and the third book and beyond are considered YA. PoA isn’t my most favorite book in the series, but I think it is entertaining enough not to be my least favorite haha

hey dude the basilisk didn't kill everyone because he wasn't meant to kill everyone. He was targeted specifically at muggleborns by tom riddle/Voldemort. But the fact that no one died is kinda wierd. Also, Harry didn't get mad when Malfoy called Hermione a mudblood because he didn't know what a mudblood means since he's new to the wizard world where as ron is a pureblood n stuff. Lucius gave the dairy to Ginny because he hates the Weasleys. Like the Malfoys the Weasley family are purebloods, but they don’t live up to Lucius‘ standards. They‘re poor, Arthur‘s interested in muggle objects and they don’t care about one‘s blood status. Lucius just can‘t stand their mentality, so he gave the dairy to Ginny to get them in trouble.

The point system (and houses) is actually something that’s pretty common in U.K. schools right now. It’s an incentive to behave and put extra effort into their work. There are usually short- and long-term rewards they can earn (individually and as a house), but it’s largely a kind of institutionalised peer pressure because the other kids in your house will be like, “Really, Becky? You couldn’t just stop talking for five minutes so we could earn extra recess time, BECKY??”

Lucius Malfoy gave Ginny the diary that he get from Voldemort to keep safe to use it against the Weasleys. He hated them and knew that it could open the Chamber of Secrets and the blame will be on Ginny.

I love that you have so many questions. I just wanted to say that you are going to love one part of the 4th book. Not gonna say though. Okay about Lockhart, he was a ravenclaw when he was at howgwarts and except of being the comic relief of this book, I've read that he is there so make a point. That not all Ravenclaws are smart and good people. Just like someone else in the series who at first he doesn't seem brave, in the end he is the one to stand up to... You know who.

9:09 The basilisk couldn't "just appear" anywhere, it only preyed and attacked on command. And since it could only be controlled by the heir of Slytherin (aka Tom Riddle) that's why the attacks only started after Ginny started using the diary. So the basilisk isn't really after anyone at all. Also, LOTS of things will be explained later. So many of your questions will be answered.

One you finish the books, I recommend you watch SuperCarlinBrothers' Dumbledore's Plan video series. I remembered it when you talked about Lockhart and they had a pretty good theory on why he was employed. Their videos about various HP theories are pretty good in general. Some of the theories are bonkers, but there's a lot that I'm honestly convinced is true.

Don’t you worry, LOTS of characters will die in this series. But the first two books are way more middle grade, the series gets much older and darker as it goes on

The diary was given to Ginny so that it would appear that Arthur weasley child was a muggle hater, while he has the muggle protection act - which Malfoy’s hate. If it came out that the man in charge iof that act had a child who hated muggles, it would collapse his act, which would benefit the Malfoys.

Watching this has inspired me to finish the series. Also, it's so refreshing to hear someone talk about the books without already knowing what happens because it's such a well known series that people just assume it's great, so it's nice to hear about it from the perspective of a someone new to it because it validates why it was so iconic.

YES! WE STAN RON WEASLEY! Totally agree on the points system too. It's seriously unfair and arbitrary. And heads of house being able to reward their own house and punish others is sketchy as hell (see Snape, Severus). On Lucius and the diary, someone already commented about his motives, but the reason he *has* the diary is because he has a bunch of Voldemort's old things stashed in his house. Harry sees him trying to sell some of them in Nocturn Alley.

One of J.K. Rowling's talents is successfully incorporating small (and large) mysteries which constantly keep the reader on their toes throughout her novels. For instance, in the first book there's a new mystery unveiled as a past one is resolved: what is behind the door on the third floor corridor, what Fluffy is guarding, Nicholas Flamel, Snape's loyalties, etc. It's impossible to say which books are more popular and liked than others. However, the third book does change the atmosphere of the whole series, while introducing a more complex plot than the first two. My personal favorite will always be the Half-Blood Prince. To answer some of your questions: 1) As you hypothesized, muggleborns are created due to latent magical abilities in their bloodline. A squib (a wizard-child without magic) will have married a muggle and passed along their genes. 2) Every magical child that is born is automatically and immediately (by magic) recorded as a potential Hogwarts student. During the summer before their first year they are visited by a Hogwarts professor, who explains the situation to their parents. Most commonly, this is done by Professor McGonagall - she is the Deputy Headmistress. Some parents are positive, some not. 3) All underage wizards are marked with a "Trace" that notifies the Ministry when they have done magic out of School. 4) You can indeed choose your magic school, though it's traditional for British wizards to attend their parents' alma mater. Hogwarts is also a way to make connections, since almost all British wizards go there. It's a lot easier with transport and such too. 5) The DADA position is actually cursed, so every teacher who takes the job will eventually leave by the end of the year. Dumbledore fills the position at his discretion, with input from the Board of Governors. 6) Like people have said, the basilisk was targeting specific people (muggleborns) and it's supposed to be a secret. Thus, it couldn't just appear in the entrance hall. 7) Dobby has no master. 8) Lucius Malfoy gave the diary to Ginny simply in order to get the Weasleys in trouble. He had no idea that it contained the memory of Voldemort, only that it was a very dark object. 9) The points are magically recorded though large hourglasses in the entrance hall - they are filled with gemstones of the individual houses. Collective punishment is their way of creating an internal drive to avoid trouble. As both Snape and McGonagall are biased it's not very logical though.

The points system is just something that we have in a lot of UK schools... you earn points and lose points depending on behaviour and results and stuff. Dumbledore explains that Lucius uses Ginny both to inflitrate the school with the diary, and to devalue the muggle protection act that her dad wants to introduce at the ministry.

I do love Ron. I feel like he has the most realistic reactions to things - not everyone WANTS to run into danger constantly like Harry XD Also such a sass queen! I always thought muggle borns were an anomaly but maybe years and years ago, there was some kind of spell done to make muggle borns so all the purebloods wouldn't become super inbred? I never actually thought about it before!

You're right, each book is a new year. They take place in the 90s with each year being the last digit in 199x. 1991 is book 1, 1992 book 2 ect.

I think you didn't quite catch the role of Tom/ Voldemort in the story. He was not really a ghost, but an entity in the diary, that possessed Ginny through out the school year (on and off) and first started physically manifesting at the very end. when Harry met him in the chamber
