Feb 2021 - 'MVD Entertainment' falsely claimed this video & monetised it. I disputed their claim & won! Say No to False YT Ad Claims & use Ad Blockers. Shot in 1987/ 88. So along came The Body Shop in the 1980's, and to add a touch of much needed glamour to the hippy shops was super star make up diva Barbara Daly. This video was sold in-store, alongside 'Colourings', Bodyshops first makeup line, which was famously & uniquely 'Cruelty Free.'
Pretty much all of the advice stands today & all of these top tips will give you a great everyday, natural look; and the best thing over then, is that there's so much more choice of products today, even the cheaper lines can give great finishes, unlike then when cheap make up made you look cheap ;-) It's also great as it shows techniques for younger & older skin types.
Many people have commented that this video is extremely relaxing & ASMR like, so that's now in the title. Enjoy!

This was The Body Shop's own brand 'fronted' by Barbara Daly & called 'Colourings'. It was one of, if not the first cruelty free beauty brand in the world. Due to this & its affordable price level, some of it wasn't great to use, the foundation wasn't great, it didn't cover very well & needed very careful application. The blue sponge was unhelpful as the surface was very open & it could leave streak marks if you weren't careful, the powder was rather talcy & the concealer was somewhat hard. However, the rest of the range was quite competent, useable & great value, I used some of the brushes for many years. Makeup, due to technology, has improved massively since this, but Babs' tips are still current to this day, everything else is just a passing fad!

Barbara Daly was Princess Diana's make up artist for a while. She did her wedding make up as well. Diana had a fondness for blue eyeliner and blue eyeshadow, because she had blue eyes, but Barbara taught her to use shades of brown instead.

Barbara Daly was and is a super talented make up artist, and her style is simple and uncomplicated, as is her tutorial. She was more than capable of doing “full beat” or “cut crease” which is not new, but here she is doing a simple uncomplicated make up that can be adapted for any age, and is totally relevant. She is not selling product, dissing competitors, but simply demonstrating her understated skill. Much admiration.

These are actually the makeup techniques my mom taught me, and it's how I first learned how to do my makeup. Everyone talking about today's makeup being a lot.. it is popularized by KZfaq makeup gurus, which the new generation of people growing up since 2000's have been watching. But the skills she taught in this video are still used today, and as a beauty consultant, when people come to me to learn, this is still how I teach them. There's no way to teach customers how to do a full beat face in one go, that takes a lot of practice maybe even years for some to be that good. Makeup today is a true art and not everyone can do cut creases and all these crazy looks so easily.

I had the video tape of this as a kid and once I watched it, I couldn't stop. I probably watched this thousands of times. It also explains why I had quite a few of Body Shop's brushes. Barbara was my first/original video makeup guru! hahaha... I used many of her techniques for years and they were definitely very useful. I have since "grown" into my own and learned more tips and tricks from others as well. But one of the most important things I learned along the way is, there is no one single way to apply anything and I shouldn't fear making mistakes. I can always wipe it off and re-apply. One particular mua helped me come to this very important conclusion. When I heard that, it was like an epiphany! Nevertheless, I will always thank Barbara for giving me a good head start and for making me love and enjoy applying makeup.

I was so surprised to see this video! I still have this VHS tape somewhere that I bought in my twenties a I'll see if I can find it! Barbara Daly was so amazing, as well as Colourings for Body Shop she created Make Up for Tesco. A really good value make up that pretty anyone could afford and some of it innovative at the time especially for less expensive ranges. Also many of the techniques she uses here weren't yet used by most women at the time but are much more common now. Many of her techniques for the older model are still relevant today. I could use them myself as I am now 56 :). Her point that less is more and softening you look as you age is much easier now that products are more refined and more pleasant to use today especially in high street cosmetics. I often used to do my friends make up at the time and my mum if she was going to an occasion as she wasn't really into make up. I would have loved to have been a make up artist myself as I always had an interest in it - making scrapbooks from the beauty pages of magazines of different techniques and looks and trying them on myself as the youtubers do today. It's such fun to watch these now and catch up with the modern techniques and products. Enjoy :)

Why is everyone saying that we wear way too much makeup today as compared to the '80's? THIS is a more subtle look, but the '80's were known for being loud, colorful, vibrant and excessive. We wore a TON of makeup back then, as well...this is just a less obvious application. Check out movies from that era. We had our over the top circus makeup looks then, too!

Wow.. I remember what an impact Barbara Daly had on us in the uk in the 80s. As far as I can recall, she was the first person to teach us things like putting highlighter on the Cupid’s bow, more than one colour around the eyes... and indeed using eyeshadow colours that are complementary to one’s eye colour. She was quite a revolutionary in those days. I have to say I like the softer more natural look of her make up, rather than the harsh-browed, over highlighted and contoured faces Much of KZfaq encourages us to have these days. I love those soft and natural eyebrows!

I think a lot of people. (due to KZfaqrs' influence) do use way too much makeup & some forget the cardinal makeup rule: blend, blend, blend & blend everything. Seems contouring, bronzing, blush & highting get overlooked on the blending. I get that KZfaq beauty gurus go a bit more dramatic because they are in front if a camera, but honestly a little bit more blending makes everything look so much better & eliminates that severe stripey bronzer/contour issue. Sorry, I'm done preaching & will step down off my soapbox now

My daughter and her friends are looking for a good 80's makeup guide for their Halloween costumes this year (because of Stranger Things, of course) and I sent her this. I remember watching this as a part of my store training back in the mid 90's too. 😂 A great walk down memory lane. I also showed her how to use two tones of blue or gray eye liner a'la Princess Diana. It's been so much fun. She's helped give me a modern glam big cat eye ruby nose makeover too. Some people are complaining about hoe modern makeup is overdone but I love seeing how our personal expressions come through. We're even working on modifying a 1930's style makeover with a modern twist. Some kids are starting to reject the huge inflated lips look and trying out the 20's&30's cupid's bow technique. But the bottom line with makeup: Have fun and express yourself! No look is "wrong" if you enjoy it! 🥰

I don't think this will help anyone to create an over the top look for Halloween, maybe the Donna Mills (Knots Landing) beauty video would be better, lots of blues & pinks. The thing that would do it, that most can't recreate, is a big frizzy curly perm. Good luck.

@thebadtemperedbrit
@thebadtemperedbrit Жыл бұрын
You must also remember that Babs was, although subtley, promoting her makup line in The Body Shop, which carried coloured mascaras, in green, blue & purple. Everybody didn't do it, but it was an 80's 'thing'' to use extra colour, so this helped. I broadly agree, an amazing formula can do wonders, but you also get lucky if you have 'good' skin, without that, even great formulas will need skilled application. From memory, I think it was 'Elephant hide' but yes, gotta watch out for that 😄.

The best thing about makeup/fashion trends in general is that it comes and goes. In the video she explained that winged liner looked "old-fashioned" and now it's a popular thing to do. Right now the popular makeup trend is excessive eyeshadow/eyeliner/highlighting/contouring but before you know it this makeup look in the video will become popular again.
