The Apache reminds of trying to learn AAR when I first started flying in DCS. I had to practice practice practice everyday. Never saw big improvements day to day but watching replays from day 1 to day 30, it was like watching two completely different pilots. Love the Apache though and it is hella rewarding try and master. Your videos confirm what I was trying to tell Growling Sidewinder and others about Apache operations, that first week of the module launch, that very little of fast mover muscle memory will apply going forward. I loved your reference to the "magic button!" The flir and tv image contrast concept is something everyone needs to know about. No longer are you top down in God mode, Apache operates in the trees, in the weeds, a clear line of sight is never common, let alone guaranteed. What would be really nice is if you could talk a bit about combined arms with the USAF, doing anti-armor and SEAD. People don't believe me when I talk about Cold War doctrine/tactics that were to be with the A.O. altitudes of your respective weapons systems at a few hundred feet at all times, never in the thousands. Apaches at tree top and A-10's doing skidding turns just above that, to keep masked as much as possible with nap of the earth maneuvering, mother earth as your best defense, keeping her between you and the ground threat. Turning around a half dozen missions or more a day, to stem the Warsaw Pact armored thrusts coming town through Poland toward the Fulda Gap.

@@schoolio64D Love watching your vids! It must have been awesome and terrifying all at the same time, when you started flying rotary wing aircraft. Thanks for protecting all of us in the free world when your were a younger guy, it is appreciated more than you know. We get to live our lives while you are away from yours back home. It's why I love seeing morale boosting things that give the troops a taste of home while serving. DFAC at Ft. Myer, VA the command base, with more generals and admirals than you can shake a stick at. Some teams looking guys eating in a cluster with their backs to the walls in a corner away from everyone else. Dour looks on their faces, like their presentation or action report results were not what they wanted to hear/receive. Request denied kind of mood, going on. One of them comes over to the group and says, "Get up off your asses! Come look what I just found! They've got a soft serve desert station over there and it's even got fuckin' sprinkles!" Watched in rapt fascination as these mountain size men scurried back and forth with their prizes, tucked in over their little taste of back home, remembering those soft summer days with family, enjoying ice cream at the neighborhood shops. Your teachings here do the same but in reverse. So many of the DCS fans dreamed of serving like you did, most knowing from childhood it would never be possible, myriad reasons kept it out of their reach. When actual flight crews like you give your attention to their hobby, some too embarrassed to admit to anyone, it brings great joy to their lives. Thank you for that.

I have found that by becoming a better Huey pilot, I have become a better Apache pilot. I find the Huey to be a little less forgiving, and easier to correct mistakes. When I first got the Apache I was constantly encountering pilot induced oscillation, and getting caught in the "vortex" and losing lift, and fell like a stone out of the sky. Then I bought the Huey and practiced a ton, and applied my knowledge to the Apache. I still can't pick a load up with the Huey, but its a work in progress. I couldn't air to air refuel with any jet either, but now I'm a pro lol.

Very helpful. It's a process requiring much more finesse than the fixed machines, especially the fancy ones with their fly by wire magic ironing out all the kinks in your clumsy input. The performance parameter explanation was also very helpful, taking into consideration the power required. If taken as a guess, I think that leaves you over controlling in critical flight transitions, especially since dcs can't recreate the physics of feel.

@schoolio64D
@schoolio64D Жыл бұрын
I've actually added a custom curve back into my pedals because they were too sensitive. I have my stick on an extension, which makes my controls more precise but less responsive, which works great without adding a curve. However, if you don't have an extension, I might use a custom curve that is relatively flat until you get to the very edges.

I'm sure this is also easier (when experienced in real-world operation), when you can actually FEEL the aircraft. That's the one thing about simulators that always fucks me up... you can't FEEL anything. Whether it's a car, or a plane, or a helo, when you're experienced with the operation of it's real-world counterpart, the thing you're controlling....it's almost like it's an extension of you, and manipulating it is like using a limb. you know just what to do, and how much of it to do, to get the thing your controlling to do what you want it to do.

I've been taking at least an hour every day just constantly taking off and landing with a pretty heavy loadout/fuel. At first I'd get a ton of anxiety trying to land smoothly or hold her steady coming into transistion speeds under 40 knots down to 20. I've gotten much better at it but still can't land on a helipad like on the oil rigs, but a decent patch of land is no problem. Vertical acceleration is the first thing you feel in a real aircraft and even the most green student corrects for comfort in that regime immediately. In sims it is very difficult to train for, without getting into expensive motion control. Highlighting how important your vertical speed is during operations, is a great, great pointer. @schoolio64D
@schoolio64D 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! Probably the best way to check your OGE power requirement is to test it. Until the PERF page computes correctly, there’s no other really good answer. In my video it was roughly 25% more to hover OGE, but I wouldn’t necessarily use that as a rule of thumb. In the real world, you (or a computer program) compute the PPC, and then validate that the info matches on the PERF page. Then you do an IGE power check, and if that matches, your PPC and PERF page are considered validated.

No worries, thanks for watching! I7-10700k, RTX 3080, 64GB RAM, using TrackIR for the recording but prefer to fly in VR (Oculus Quest 2). I use a TM Warthog HOTAS (stick and throttle) with a Virpil Rotor plus collective with Hawk grip. I tried DCS several years ago and couldn’t really get in to it then. I came back last year and committed to it, flying the Hornet primarily. I bought the Huey module last summer and started flying the 60 when it was released (I’m also rated in 60s). The Apache is just the icing on the cake.

Fastest I ever got in level flight with 100% torque was about 140, and that was probably with empty hellfire racks and rocket pods. It’s always going to be dependent on the load and conditions.

@@schoolio64D That makes me feel a bit better that I can't seem to get the Apache much over 120 knots in-game. I'd always read that 150-170 was "max speed", and I've even seen sources implying that the aircraft should *cruise* in the 150s, and that wasn't aligning with anything going on in-game. Go figure, websites have the wrong info. I really should have know better, I've had to correct people enough times about specs from websites being wrong about other, fixed-wing airframes before. Even if not explicitly wrong, the numbers are often taken from very edge cases of the flight envelope (IE, "sure prop plane X can climb at 9,000 feet per minute... but only at sea level, at near empty weight, and while running war emergency power that can only be used for three minutes before blowing the engine gaskets; that doesn't mean it can do so at all weights and altitudes!") Anyhow, it's good to know it's the websites that are wrong, instead of the DCS flight model (or at least that the DCS model is close)

Good video. I think you should have emphasised though that you were far from fully loaded when you were hovering out of ground effect, both in fuel and weapons. I think a lot of people are taking full fuel and weapons and not realizing that the Apache is going to be near max torque and above at that weight if your not careful with collective inputs, and that most of the time hovering out of ground effect is not practical fully loaded, or at least not done till you've burnt off a bunch of fuel traveling to your target area.

From my own experience, the Hind is a beast, the Apache is not. Take time to learn the Hind and afterward any other machine will seem much easier. After many hours in the Hind I jumped in the Apache and it was very easy to fly and control. Obviously, there're differences between the two machines, but the amount of concentration required to handle the Hind with any amount of finesse is much more than the Apache. However, an excellent video on the Apache Wuss Wagon, thank you.;-)

@@freemandiy I think someone put out a number associated with how much is "seat of the pants" versus how much is visual, but I don't know what that is. Regardless, seat of your pants is definitely a major portion of how you fly. When we first transitioned from A-models to Longbows, the older pilots grumbled because we only used the HDU at night with the NVS in the A's, but in the D's we were supposed to wear them all the time. The symbology certainly adds to your understanding of what the aircraft is doing, but you could absolutely fly the aircraft without it...even in DCS.
