I flew Air Berlin on my first trip to Europe this past summer, when we reached cruising altitude and the steward started passing out drinks, (I was 20 at the time and couldn’t drink in the US), I asked if we were allowed to have a drink since we were on the airplane now. He just turned to me and said, “This is a German airline! Of course you can have a beer!”. I got to have my first legal drink, a German Warsteiner beer on Air Berlin. I will never forget that so long as I live.

"You served an island city." Powerful statement spoken lightly. Air Berlin wasn't any other airline (although it became that in their last years), it connected West Berlin to the rest of germany. It played a vital role in keeping the west german exclave within the east functioning. That's why it was so beloved and almost part of Berlin's identity. Many citizens of Berlin would more likely name it alongside the Berlin Airlift than alongside Lufthansa, Air France or BA...

AirBerlin is to Berlin just like something you could compare with a local sports team. Lots of fans, local, mostly great service, personal n' friendly staff, cheap fares etc.. They were just ... good.
@wildgurgs36146 жыл бұрын
But then why did they go bankrupt? TOO low fares?
@toastbrotlf20006 жыл бұрын
WildGurgs36 crushed by Ryanair, easyJet, Eurowings & co. Also major shareholder Etihad restricted them in making many business decisions. In the end it doesn't come down to offering a good service but rather filling the plane. I personally never flew AirBerlin domestically, just a lot of Trans-Atlantic. The domestic business is way harder due to all these extreme-low-fare airlines.
