Vintage 1958-1960 Les Pauls are often referred to as Bursts. This particular guitar is known as the “Richrath Burst” as it used to be owned by Gary Richrath of the band REO Speedwagon and it is currently for sale at Lucky Fret Music Co in London.
“The Richrath Burst is well known in the Burst dealer community having been owned by some of the most prolific names in the business; Jacques Mazzoleni who initially acquired the guitar from Gary's girlfriend around 1990, then passing through the hands of Richard Friedman, Kosta Kovachev and Gil Southworth, only to return to Jacques in 1998 from whom Andrew purchased the guitar. It was also given a thorough workout by the one and only Joe Bonamassa during his show at the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena in 2018, used on the song "Breaking Up Someone's Home." - www.luckyfret.com

Most do not understand what it is like when the 1959 burst bug bites you. For years i did not put much thought into Les paul's let alone the holy grail one, the 1959 burst. Then a few years later the bug bite me and i have been infected since! Now i love everything about the old 1958-60 LP's. The look of a old original 59 is just magical to me. The one you guy have here is no exception! That is gorgeous!

I want to know about the Burst he used to play on stage. My favorite is the understated Flame Top Burst with Grover tuners and pickup covers.

Hi KA - Huw here and my answer has to be the 5A3 tweed Deluxe. But I'm pretty partial to that Custom 15 and those mid 60s WEM amps really aren't very expensive at all.

Like Richrath, I keep t simple Marshall dsl40 all tube Amp, a reverb pedal set on plate, and a klon copy of pedal up front. I get great tones on ether my Les Paus, or beloved 2009 Fender Stratocaster. No rack fx, or anything else.

So why if the PAF's are not ex factory Gibson would have no reason not to use covered coils I think Gibson have used other pick ups at players demands there something Is there something odd about the control cavity route?

What is the source on the statement that DiMarzio owns the rights to the double white look? I'm confused as to how this is possible from an intellectual property standpoint. I can't imagine that it would be possible to trademark double white bobbins as some sort of brand "trade dress" especially when many guitar manufacturers use white pickup bobbins or white pickup covers. Thanks.

Dimarzio owns the rights to double cream bobbins. Not white or parchment. It's been this way for 30 plus years. And it's 100% verified fact. All stemming from jimmy pages uncovered PAF in his #1... People started imitating it... Then dimarzio trademarked the color bobbin configuration.

No doubt this is a muscle tone guitar! Gary owned several 59s so it's hard to say which one this is. The one(s) he played on stage always seemed to have more cherry burst than this one.

Very likely would have lost much of its cherry in the last 35 years.

Larry DiMarzio patented double cream bobbins back in the 70's. It is indeed quite possible that the guitar left Gibson with double whites. Gary bought that guitar from a fan here in Chicago during the Hi Inidelity tour. When Gary bought the guitar, remember that it was a 22 year old guitar and not quite the mythical guitar that it is now.
@ryans9029
@ryans9029 2 жыл бұрын
Double creams still Happen from other companies... They must be sold with covers attached so the bobbins aren't visible. Many original PAFs had double creams. And many aftermarket companies have put them out before the trademark.. And after.

What excellent marketing talks. Take a chill pill guys. The only folks watching this are serious Reo fans and Les Paul people. Try knocking on kirks or slash’s door. On another note.. the guitar is stunning and there’s a lot I’d do to just touch it.

Richrath's playing was every bit as good as Kirk's or Slash's. I would argue that serious guitar players would KNOW this.

It's funny isn't it? Our way of life requires a culture of planned obsolescence in order to sustain the corporate bottom line. It also requires a marketing system to constantly push "NEW! NEW! NEW!" every five minutes so that we all are in a constant state of dissatisfaction with what we have. "When it goes out of style, toss it on the pile!" Then, just like Joni Mitchell sang about, we don't know what we've got till it's gone. You trade your '55 Chevy in on a '73 Pinto, and soon you realize your mistake, but then it's too late because the brokers have grabbed all the '55 Chevy's and run the price of them to the moon. Same thing with the guitars. The odds are pretty good that some billionaire will lock this thing in a vault where it will never be played, or even seen by another musician for perhaps hundreds of years, possibly never. You could argue that it's the same as a Stradivarius violin, too rare and beautiful to be in the hands of one of the great unwashed, but to silence this voice in the interest of the bottom line is also a sad state of affairs. It kind of misses the whole point of even building quality instruments in the first place. It's like it's become some kind of weird, twisted idolatry. Rock and roll, just like the blues and the country music that came before it, was "The joyful noise of the ten cent beer joint" to quote Jack Kerouac. Those guitars, and the amps that went with them, defined the form. It's just sad to see the kind of elitism that prevails today over products that were built to what was just the standard of quality for that time. It shows how far we've slipped.
