Im born and raised in Detroit. I remember when it was a working and party town. What changed Detroit was the riot in 1967. Immediately after, it was flooded with drugs and with the drugs came of course, high crime, increased poverty and many other social ills. I remember. I was there through it ALL.

@VulcanLogic
@VulcanLogic Жыл бұрын
The flight started 17 years before those riots. The white population in 1967 was half of what it was in 1950. It wouldn't have mattered whether those riots happened or not. White people left for whites only suburbs, reducing the population and dooming the city. You can't maintain a city built for 1.8 million with half that number or less (now it's 1/3 but stabilizing).

Been talked about for years.It was the people in the suburbs that were opposed because they didn't want the majority population to have such regular access to their neighbors. It only seems new to some people now because most of them are the people from the suburbs that have recently moved to the city and have clear enough space to deem it a convenient new idea.

Glad to see honest representation of Detroit. I’m From lansing, but we visit Detroit often. It’s so unfair how people talk about it when they’ve never been to Detroit. I moved to Sherwood Forest in 1969. I am raising my kids here now. I have never seen the neighborhood in such fine condition. Owners are renovating, the LGBTQ neighbors are fine custodians, they really become active in the social functions, and beautify their properties. The homes are now selling at $450-500k, and are built with high quality 1920's materials. Vintage oak floors, no drywall, only plaster. Doors are solid wood, these homes were built by auto executives 100 years ago. To build the equivalent homes today would cost a fortune. The neighborhood has very low crime, with 24 hour security patrol. Families come from all over to celebrate Halloween here, after all, Sherwood Forest is haunted. We also have wild deer, wild turkeys, chipmunks, robins, blue jays, squirrels, opossums, woodchucks, racoons, and rabbits. There are no stray dogs, but many roaming housecats. The new restaurants on Livernois have caused mice proliferation, but the cats eat them up, or bring the dead mice home as a gift.

Ditto to everything you pointed out re: the joys and pains of residing here. Having spent significant amounts of time elsewhere, I think Metro Detroit is great place to call home. The cost of living, for example, is excellent here vs. other areas, particularly in and near major California cities in the NYC area. For that reason, I’m planning to buy a home near Detroit and just enjoy traveling to other places. Thanks so much for putting a well-versed and fair spotlight on Motown!

I grew up on Seven Mile & Livernois Always lived on the Westside of the city! Yes, the public schools are bad and always been overcrowded as far as I remember, but a lot great people came out of Detroit, car insurance is outrageous, Summertime is my favorite time around city, Belle isle is nice, the museums are filled with such a rich history! The public transportation is one of the worst, had to ride a few times when I had to wait to buy new cars when I got rear ended, or someone stripped my car etc. I personally wouldn’t encourage people to move to Detroit as someone who lived here almost my whole life. You can get some nice homes here for a decent rate. I can tell you the good, the bad, and in between of Detroit. I personally like the North Rosedale Park area off of Grand River and Puritan areas by the Southfield Freeway. Sherwood Forest has your every huge house need, W Outer Drive has a lot of nice homes.

See that’s the thing man, man of us Detroiters can’t see the visions because we grew up here, and kind of feel like the D is always going to be the D. I’m here to tell you brotha, 10-20 years from now the city is going to be the place to be. And everyone who doesn’t buy now will be kicking themselves that they didn’t. The city is changing, just a matter of home many of “us” will be along for the ride.

Ed, thank you so much for talking about the cultural diversity that you can find in the Metro Detroit area. I'm most likely moving there with my fiancee at some point, and as someone from LA, one of the most important things for me is being able to experience different cultures. Many real estate people focus on the amenities that you can get in places, but I value the ability to experience cultures more (esp when it's through food and markets). My fiancee is Syrian, so I love to experience the legacy of the Arab American population in Detroit, and it's nice to hear that there are many others! Cultural diversity is one of the strongest suits of any city in America, in my view!

Indianapolis is also built for driving, really easy to get to anywhere in the city in no time, BUT as you said, THE POTHOLES. One correction. Detroit gets around 200 sunny days / year, which is about the national average. Other days are cloudy or mixed. It never crossed my mind until I lived in Socal. More sun is nice, but at the same time I miss the diversity and different experiences you get with changing weather.
@jdhjimbo
@jdhjimbo 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure where you got your stats from. Detroit is tied for the fewest sunny days in America (120) with Rochester, Buffalo and Cleveland. Thanks to the Great Lakes! Summers and early Falls are pretty nice, but outside the Mother's Day to Columbus Day window, it is pretty unpleasant.

i was thinking the same thing- but i would really question 200 sunny days . I remember going back to visit my parents when they were alive- and the sky was nearly almost milky - the narrator just said -over 200 cloudy days /year- and i am more with his estimate - it can get depressing some times

So right, the Motor City has all types of hard working Americans that can do the job! I want to see Detroit move back to the number 1 car capital of the world. Bring back the tech parts and cars that went overseas and to Mexico! We can make it here and cut the supply chain down to nothing! Detroit and the Great Lakes work force can adapt to new technology and meet your needs America! Time to pass the great deal of 2021 and have congress pass our info structure bill like Ike did in the 1950's! (think about what our nation would be if we did not have our great interstate travel system)! I need to stop! However, I thank Ed Butler for posting the good, bad, ugly of Detroit today! When I left Los Angeles in November it was 95 degrees HOT! arriving at Metropolitian airport IN DETROIT, I became A FREEZE POP IN A SPLIT SECOND. My Calif Swag froze LOL. I met the nicest people in Detroit, I partied like a rock star with DETROITERS we PARITIED dammit. The next time I visit Detroit will be in the summer, still a Detroit girl, but I have a Cali Swag.
