Something I've never gotten to understand is how come the military doesn't hire Biomedical engineers to create a system that measures blood levels/passing out on the pilot and immediately turns on autopilot to keep altitude. That can't be more expensive than a single plane and pilot.

Think about what you just said.... Damn every kind of possible engineer known to mankind. If that's what they're going to do why even have a pilot in there in the first place.. Once a computer starts regulating what you can and can't do and a missile is about to take you out of the air you might as well just jump out the plane and let the computer fly it home as a matter of fact why even get into plain at all? There are rules to flying low but if you can get down low enough you can confuse a lot of computers. Believe It or Not computers are the easiest thing to fool. so when that computer is forcing you back up into that machine behind you what's the difference.... Imagine knowing you can keep pulling and then the computer saying that the blood in your head or your feet whichever it may be says you can't. The pilots know what is going to make them pass out they pass out enough to know the limits of their body and the aircraft itself. If they are fighting so hard to where they're going to pass out it's probably better that they take a nap before they hit the ground anyway

Great video !! I was lucky enough to get several rides in the back seat of an F-4C Phantom in the 80's. The most G's I experienced was 5.5 with typically 3 to 4 g's with basic flight maneuvers. Under those G loads my arms weighed a ton, my nose itched and I couldn't raise my arm to scratch it. The helmet felt like it was going to be permanently implanted in my skull and I sweated like a pig the minute we took off on the first ride. On subsequent rides I learned to 'Gumby' my body and totally relax during times of low G's in preparation for the next high G load, even then I still sweated like a pig. After each ride, without exception, I felt like I had had a full body workout that lasted 1.5 hours, I was drained. Flying fighters is a physically demanding line of work at 5.5 G's I couldn't imagine 9 G's. And the oxygen mask, it doesn't blow air into your face, you have to suck in to trip the valve to get the air to flow. What fun LOL. Thanks for the video !!

Thank you for your service. Quick question.... due to pilot susceptibility to g’s, fighter drones seems to be the next natural evolution of combat flying. Do you see that on the horizon? It seems like the jets are hindered in their engineering designs and capability, if you take human limitations out of the equation, seems like you can achieve true air superiority by designing jets that can push engineering design.

I wish it were easier for aviation enthusiasts to take an incentive ride in one of these machines. I'm pretty sure I couldn't do more than three g myself but it'd be fun to try. But with single-seat the norm these days and an uncertain future for manned machines in the first place ("human factors") I have to imagine the window for taking joy rides in these things is slowly closing. Horizontal maneuvers (often done in a slight downward spiral to maintain energy) are the harder ones as it can last longer. On vertical upward maneuvers you lose energy quickly and by that G's will become less as well.

@LarsHofman

As an aerobatic pilot I can say that it is very different. I too experience this "falling down" fear in the stomach when going down first hill or being dropped on a rollercoaster. But in the air, I have none of that feeling in my stomach. Positive G's are just making you feel very heavy and you have to fight it by straining. Negative G's mostly give you the feeling in your head like hanging up side down for a while so that your head becomes red. This feeling times ten is like how it feels at -4 or -5G's. Really terrible and that's why most pilots don't like negative G's.

Over G is when you're exceeding the G load limits of the airframe itself and/or the weapons pylons on the wings. A MiG-29 (I am an Eastern Bloc specialist so I'll be measuring against aircraft I know) can do 9Gs when clean, however if you have 6 x Kh-25s (AS-10) missiles onboard (these are old missiles we use for practice as we have a huge stockpile of them) you get an over-G warning indicator at 6.5Gs. At 7.5Gs the weapons pylons on the outer two points will break away to avoid ripping your wings off. This is why most eastern bloc air forces use the protocol that when anytime an aircraft is detected in the kill threat radius of the plane, the pilot engages the function "Центр наводнения" (flood to center) bringing all fuel from external tanks and pods into the central storage rapidly, the moment the main tank is full or the externals are empty they auto-jettison so you are closer to "clean" and you can pull more Gs before hitting Over G. I hope this answers your question. If you have any others, I'll be happy to assist.

What happens to the pilot when the systems saves them during a g-lock. Is there a review from higher command? Grounded?

There is a review of the AGSM from the flight doc as well as leadership. Typically they have to go back to the centrifuge for training

How the hell do you even measure the percentage of dehydration?! I mean you could look at how good something non conductive (in a totally dry/pure state) conducts electricity through its water content but i can't imagine them electrocuting their pilots to find out if they are 3% dehydrated xD just curious

It's sort of sad to me that with the Dragon capsule it seems highly unlikely that fighter pilots/test pilots will play a significant role in low earth orbit space flight.
