Please Note: I've updated this video (May 20204) with some new information that shows an important step with closing up the Rear Main Seal with Anaerobic gasket maker and also changing out the nylon sleeve of the oil pump shaft to anew shaft with a metal sleeve. When you come to the section of putting back the bearing cap and oil pump drive shaft, have a look at this supplemental video. Here is the link to the updated content. Video Link: • Updated Oil Pump and M...
In this video you will see the complete removal and re-installation of an Oil Pump, Oil Pump Screen, and Main Rear Crankshaft Seal on a C3 Corvette, Chevrolet 5.7Ltr 350cid V8. This process is clearly described and filmed to show you the complete process with great under engine views, installation guidance, and other useful information.

Hi there.... Greetings from Miami. Thank you so much for producing this very detailed video. I have a 79 Vette that is having this leak issue every once in a while and your video really helps out when I tackle this. I also appreciate you providing the part numbers for ease of ordering.... Kindest regards!

Just started the process of replacing the clutch in my '78. I was thinking of replacing the oil plan gasket since the exhaust is out and now I guess I'm adding a new oil pump and rear seal. Thanks for the great videos!

That's about where I was ...8 wanted to replace the oil pan gasket and that lead to a ton of extra, but good to do at the same time type of things. My red Corvette was essentially untouched since new and that means alot of replacement of parts. Good luck with your jobs and thanks for watching. J

Your videos have provided incredible insight and assistance in the tackling of my ‘76 vette jobs. You’ve brought a lot of clarity to my tasks and given me the confidence to tackle the jobs. (Water pump, timing chain, oil pan, oil pump, rear seal, etc…) The jobs never seem to end. One job, aside from the front suspension) I am not looking forward to is changing the valve seals.

Thanks so much and seems like once these jobs start, it only makes sense to do a bunch at once especially after removing the Rad and all other components. I hope all the work that you have been doing is turning out OK. J

That screen will eventually move and fall unless you JB Weld the screen shaft to the case or tach it with a mig welder. I would have not used the nylon bush for the shaft and that is why they supplied you with the metal 1 piece. When you lose oil pressure in the future you will know why. Other than that an excellent video.

In case anybody else is looking for instructions, let's address some blunders: -You're supposed to put RTV on the back side of the seal to adhere it to the channel. I'm not sure why you chose to lubricate the back side rather than sealing it (even when the instructions explicitly state as such) but that gives the oil an easy path around. - You need to seal the left and right seams of the bearing cap on either side of the seal ends. The reason for this is that seam is oil soaked, but it exists between the crank seal and oil pan gasket. That will definitely become a leak. -For the oil pump drive shaft, the nylon coupling is infamous for breaking and allowing the driveshaft to drop, spontaneously losing oil pressure. There's really no reason to preventatively replace an oil pump, but upgrading the driveshaft certainly would've been an improvement. I can't believe you bought all the pieces, had the improved shaft in hand, and just opted not too. The rest of the time spent on the oil pump was likely of little value. The actual mechanism of an oil pump isn't something that just "fails." -The oil pump screen! If you're going to install one, do a proper depth check against the oil pan. And you used more assembly lube! If you wanted to use a chemical, it ought to be a press fit retaining compound. Ideally press it dry, then braze it or tack it with a Tig. Plenty of SBC oil pump pickups have fallen out over the years. I'm concerned over the amount of force it took to hammer the screen in. Those didn't sound like hard hits. I hope I'm wrong. I hope your car runs great and you enjoy it. But for anybody else watching, these items left overlooked can turn into their own persistent issues.

Great comments and all part of the goal of this channel is to share knowledge, skills, and ideas about these cars. I appreciate your comments and will make the adjustments. At this time, no fluid has been added to this car, so I'll dive back in and see what I can do. Thanks again.

I've updated the video content with a short supplementary video that has the steel sleeve shaft, plus I put some anaerobic gasket maker on the seam of the bearing cap. The link to the supplemental video is here and also referred to in the description of the original video. J Video Link is here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJxyhbR-2rLXh6M.html

I noticed that you set your final angle for the oil pickup at 10.5 deg...the original angle you measured was 11.8 deg...might want to check those again if you are trying to be that precise...love the videos and looking forward to more to come

That's a great observation and inoticed that too. For me at the end of the process as long as they were both reading the same angle , I was good with that ....somewhere around 10.5 which is what I got when I did a side by side final comparison. Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. J

I would never put an oil pump in with out taking it apart and deburring everything and checking all the measurements of all moving parts like the gears and the bottom plate.your old one looked new like the rest of it.the spring is really the only thing that can go out on it except of course that cheesy plastic fastener.grinding the oil hole on the pump always helps oil flow.using clay for the screen install instead of an angle finder is good to so you know how close your screen is to anything inside the pan.if it’s a regular pump I also would have taken the spring out and installed a plain washer to the end of it and put the pin back in to add just a bit more oil press.which again goes along with grinding the oil path entrance on the pump so it flows freer and faster.after last torque step wait an hour and do it again but since you had access do em all.i had a brain fart and couldn’t think of the term at the time but the term is blueprinting the oil pump and it is the heart of every engine,,you don’t trust that to the manufacturers.

Greet comments and thank youmgor providing some more detail. I may actually action some.of what you mentioned as it's not too late to take apart and repeat b4 I put on all the exhaust because after that it's a pain to take the oil pan off with the exhaust y pipe still in the way. Thanks for watching and commenting. J

I don’t know the extent of your knowledge but on You/Tube if punch in sbc oil pump and oil system blue printing there is much to choose from but be careful not all are as good as it gets but for a little time and maybe a couple bucks you can do well cause if your oiling system is as good as possible it helps not just the lube potential but cooling and ignition.

My seal seems completely stuck in there. When I try to hammer it out the seal itself just gets damaged and pushed in but it doesn’t pop out in the other side for me to pull it out with pliers. Any suggestions??

when you put the rear bearing cap back on with the seal offset by 3/8", dont you risk shaving the portion of the seal that's sticking out by the sharp edge on the bearing cap? Wouldnt it be safer just to have the seal flush as per the factory manual?
@Motorcycology
@Motorcycology 11 ай бұрын
You know, that is a great comment and observation. That seal shaves off so easily, you may be better to install like the factory. Most references I read, show it offset. Most of the shaving activity comes from the part where the seal is slid in the non-removable section. I was 50/50 to be honest. J

I see you put RTV on the seal itself as well, I'm just curious - won't this create unwanted pressure and deform the seal shape? As far as I understood the manual correctly, you should only put the RTV on the _II_ shaped metal parts? Thanks for great video, though!
@Motorcycology
@Motorcycology 8 ай бұрын
I've seen it done both ways , plus you coud put a super small bead of RTV on the metal edges of the main seal cap where it connects to the engine block. I hear what you are saying those and it's 50/50 as to whether you want to put a super tiny amount of RTV on both halfs of the oil seal. I decided to as I really don't want this to leak. 🤞
