Not too long ago, it looked like New York's glory days as a center for dance music had passed. As the birthplace of disco and hip-hop and the home of legendary nightclubs like the Paradise Garage, Limelight and Twilo, the city has long been part of the cultural fabric. But as the notoriously grimy city of the late 20th century transformed into the sleek and hyper-gentrified metropolis of today, its thriving underground lost its foothold.
New Yorkers have long flourished under adversity, though, and its now bustling party scene is a testament to this. Promoters, producers and DJs jumped the East River to establish Brooklyn as a new creative center. Lofts and warehouses filled the void left by Manhattan's shuttered nightclubs, and a new generation of producers is infusing the city's musical legacy with the sounds of the international scene. But the luxury condos rising along the waterfront are a constant reminder that the city's relentless evolution could easily stamp things out again. We burrowed deep for our latest Real Scenes film, discovering how some of the key players in this vast scene are hustling hard to make it last.

NYC Is rated to be some of the most expencive cities to live. Some people work 2 jobs just to pay rent, Then you gotta hustle for food and other shit. Not even speaking about creative endeavors and the money you have to invest into that. Big Propz to the New Yorkers

Loved this - hearing these guys reminded me of how huge NYC is - not in its real estate but more in its density, diversity and infrastructure and to survive in it - doing creative work is very difficult so the ones who endure are legends.

One of the best Real Scenes documentary out there. Although it probably depicts quite accurately the current scene in New York, I was kind of taken aback by the negativity. These people all share a passion, and I find it sad that they are not able to look past the daily struggles and enjoy what they have created and are creating. This is easier said than done, but perhaps a more open mindset would lead to even more creativity and even better, livelier scene. Good luck to all you musicians, promoters and music-enthusiasts out there!

All I gotta say is, the underground scene is BOOMING in NYC rn and has been for the past few years. It's a really really great time to be in this city for electronic music. RA should do an updated documentary for NYC next year!

I live in New York City, every time I feel down and out like im done with this city in the past 3 years ive come back to this documentary and it really inspires me and give me hope for the future, the words of these people the music and the great technical ability of the people who put this together, meaning everyone at RA that had any say in this makes shitty days worth living, and for everyone who doesnt understand this and doesnt live here i can only tell you that this is 100% real and i live it every day.

Berlin is actually known to be quite cheap in comparison to New York. I've heard about artists renting big warehouse spaces and cheap flats in the outer areas of Berlin, like the spaces where a lot of the 50s/60s/70s painters, dancers, performance artists, conceptual artists etc lived/worked - you can't do that in NYC any more. No one can afford it.

I hate entrepreneurial crap, I hate corporations, I hate the rich. The underground scenes, the real creative wacky people are for me. That's not me trying to be cool, that's just embracing being human and not being a slave to money. These real scene videos are comforting to watch, it's good to know there are many communities around the worldvwho share my viewpoint.

Awesome video series as usual! I identified a lot with this one, living in Williamsburg from 2005 until 2009 being displaced to Crown Heights because the rent had massively gone up and then ultimately getting away from the city because I needed to go live in a "small village". Thanks again RA

I think New York has a nightlife, but only for people who can afford it. The type of clubs where you pay a month salary for a drink and where music is played that you hear 20 times on the radio. The best underground scenes are in Europe, no doubt about that.

This was amazing! Pretty real and true to life. I ❤ BROOKLYN! It's got the best vibes and this film captured a small slice of the underground scene! Im so glad they focused on the loft party scene. It may have vanished already, but a few years back, there were hardly any clubs and loftlife was where you could get the good music and partylife!!!

It’s hilarious you watch the London one and it’s all about the mix of diversity and joy that the best scenes bring. I get the idea of the politics of clubbing and the wider city, I mean look at Sydney... Clubbing is meant to be political of course, but it should be about escapism and freedom in the environment in which you find yourself as well.

Typical old guard mentality New Yorkers have: "I'm so much more New York than you can ever be". Get over yourselves and change and welcome. No wonder your scene is a stagnant pool of ego.

except i'd have to say your totally incorrect about that. i mean, you posted this three years ago, but there is a massive shift in the culture occurring here. stagnation is brought about by these types of changes, not what has been here. that sai, i do agree that (although i enjoy the scene here) it is a lot of the same kind of music. but within that similar genre (house), there is a LOT of variety and lots of international talent coming in. but one last thing. there absolutely is a difference between someone who's lived here without privilege and someone moving here because of their privilege.

Maybe I watched a different video than you and Mr Dubstep from pristine NYC did, but the video I watched captured the passion for the industry, and the desire to keep the trendy wannabe celebrities out of it, and yeah, some classically jaded NYkers that existed long before RA event dreamed of making such a video. I don't think anyone is saying it isn't difficult to live in other places, but New York isn't a walk in the park, especially with the influx of the wannabe VIP celebrity dorks.

Depressing to see how far nyc has fallen same can be said about London at the moment two places that are over populated by wannabe's out for themselves, Id like to see more docs about the smaller cities that actually have thieving club scenes and artists adding to the scene check out Ireland Belfast, Dublin and Derry were creative musicians are common and there are no shortage of underground parties with electric atmospheres.
