While Gotti was talking to reporters or being cheered on by his fans, Chin was doing everything he could to be under the radar. Beneath notice, when Chin was out in the bathrobe, drooling on himself I bet he really disliked Gotti, on top of everything else he did, being flashy and bringing so much attention was like a slap in the face. I doubt Gigante enjoyed the constant surveillance and having to act that way but John apparently thought so. Chin does it for fun. It's not like it's necessary to do to stay out of prison. Gotti could have went rain man on the feds and it wouldnt have worked. Too much ego any way. Gigante couldnt have cared less about what the rest of the world thought of him, he wanted to be overlooked, underestimated and left alone by everybody except his family.

That’s true I got to respect gotti for his mentality about the life he knew he was going to die or end up in jail. I think that’s why he just dint care apparently he used to get sketched out when people saved $$ because he knew his fate and everyone else’s in that life ... prison or dead
@histguy101
@histguy101 2 жыл бұрын
Gotti never talked to reporters. He didn't give interviews, or pose for photos or any of that. In fact, he didn't operate all that differently from Chin. They both killed or tried to kill a boss without commission approval. They both tried to expand their family interests and influence over the smaller families. They both were made a spectacle of by the media, Chin because of his weird public behavior, Gotti because of his trials. They both operated out of run down social clubs in Manhattan that were both connected to a secret apartment where they would conduct official mob business. They were both secretly informed on by people in their own families, and they were both convicted through the key witness testimony of Sam Gravano & Phil Leonetti. They both continued to run their families from prison and they both died in prison. After they died, their respective families continued to be run by their inner circle. Of the dozen or so Italian mob families left in the US, the Gambino and Genovese continue to be the largest, most powerful, and most active.

Definitely one of if not the most interesting. And from 1977/1980, up until his jail sentence in 1997, he was the most powerful mobster in New York, after Carlo Gambino died in 1976. There was another guy, boss of the Genovese Family until he “retired” in 1980, named Philip “Benny Squints” Lombardo, who named The Chin the boss after he “retired”, who may have been more powerful if he was still taking $$$ and controlling The Chin after he “retired” in 1980, but who knows...

Lol whoever made this needs to do more research. The Chin was the person behind the Angelo Bruno hit because Angelo was a long time friend of Carlo Gambino and aligned with the Gambino family, giving Castellano more power as the head of the commission, because Philadelphia was the one vote that could sway power from the Gambino’s to the Genovese depending on who was boss. The Chin thru his underboss Frank Tieri, played Anthony Capinigro in tricking him into killing Bruno, so that the Genovese could assign a boss in Philly and AC who was aligned with them, giving the Chin the extra vote at the commission and ultimately making the Chin boss of all bosses. Also, with Capinigro out of the way, the Genovese could easily expand their territory and rackets into North Jersey because Tony was in charge of North Jersey at the time. Phil Leonetti talks about it in detail in his book, “Mafia Prince”. I think Sammy might even talk about it in his book too.

“The Godfather of Harlem” is a current series that you may want to check out; it’s set in Harlem in the 1960’s, and centers around real-life gangster Bumpy Johnson, (portrayed by Forest Whitaker) who ruled over Harlem in the 1960’s; building his empire on the astronomical profits that came from the distribution and sale of heroin. Vincent “The Chin” Gigante (portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio) is a heavily featured character in the series. It’s a stellar cast all the way around, featuring other great actors; Chazz Palminteri as Joe Bonanno, Paul Sorvino as Frank Costello, Giancarlo Esposito as Adam Clayton Powell (Giancarlo played Gus Fring in “Breaking Bad), and Nigel Thatch as Malcolm X. Now, whether or not it’s historically accurate? I don’t know. There are references to some events at that time that do seem accurate, but I don’t know how much “creative license” is being used to tweak the storylines for dramatic effect. Regardless of its possible accuracy (or inaccuracies), the acting, storylines, set design, and camera work, are all fantastic. FWIW 😊

OF COURSE he was FEARED, but he was also well respected and a lot of guys gained well by staying with him - otherwise - had he been ONLY & EXCLUSIVELY FEARED - basing his power on FEAR ONLY - he'd NEVER - freaking EVER held the poition of "first among equals" within the Genovese-family bosses, since the death of Vito Genovese, until ...almost the turn of the century as far as I remewmber! Bosses that run ONLY through fear do not last long - sure as hell not 30-40, years like "Chin" and they always end BADLY. Look at Anastasia or ... that other butcher! - Joe Masseria. Look at how "reigns f fear" always end - in a bloodbath! - just like in Philadelphia under Scarfo. Hell! I live in Italy - i still remember the bombs and the bodies RIINA and PROVENZANO left in their wake! - more than 3 000 people during the "Corleonesi-wars", not to mention those who lost their lives in bombings! - and the Sicilian mob never recovered from that - at the end the Sicilians had to "pass the torch" to the Calabrese mafia - the 'Ndragheta, and - the biggest "mob-empire" not just in Italy but in the whole of Europe, with ties to all American drug cartels and soldiers all around the world.
