Earning Money for Free Software in 2023

This year has been quite a tough one in terms of work, but was it productive in terms of earnings? This week I do the year end review of the financial health of my programming job trying to make Inkscape better and ask the questions about just how sustainable this all is.
Also included is an update on Inkscape's project wide financies and the questions we will have to ask in 2024 about what we want to pursue if we want to continue to spend money on engineering.
Your comments and thoughts on this one are most welcome. Please do share these videos on any and all social media you particpate in and thank you for all you help for the past year if you've been able to.

Absolutely important to have this type of video so people can have their feet on the ground and help fund the free software we all extensively love & use! (If I am able to get a promotion at work I will surely increase my donation)

Thank you again for what you do, Martin! Since you were talking about things that the end user wants, here's a quality of life feature that I want: About half of the world uses a decimal comma instead of a decimal point. When Inkscape detects a decimal comma it seems to round the number off to the nearest whole number, making the numerical keyboard useless. While I think that decimal point makes more sense and wish that the rest of the world would switch over, one has to realize that it won't happen in the near future. Meanwhile it would be nice if Inkscape treated decimal commas the same as decimal points. Happy new year Martin and the Inkscape team!

This sounds like a localization error. And not too surprising and it's difficult to test for all of these eventualities. Could you post the issue to inkscape.org/report ?

Do you prefer LiberaPay or Patreon? I'm wondering if one is preferable on your end, e.g. they take less in fees, etc.

There's no money in it. Ten cents per video? It's not really worth it.

Does Inkscape have substantial python parts in its code base? I'm by no means an expert developer, but I want to contribute if I can

It certainly does. There are two parts that need python help, one is the extensions which are in fairly good shape but need more help clearing out issues. You can find them here: gitlab.com/inkscape/extensions/ the second part is the django based website, but that's for folks who are more into web side of things. Come to chat.inkscape.org and hang out when you have time, it'd be great to see you there.
