I think one of the most common problems OSS has, is, more often than not, UX/UI related. Scribus is a prime example. Extremely powerful but let down mostly due to these problems.
@doctormo
@doctormo 2 күн бұрын
The UX/UI problems you identify are not the actual main problems. The main problems is funding. Why would anyone make a good UX for nothing? Who would even be able to read minds well enough to put that much work into serving other people so well without any sort of relationship between themselves and their customers? it's magical thinking to imagine Scribus or Inkscape or anything else can produce UX/UI that fits your needs without you being involved in it's production somehow. Hopefully with funding.

@@doctormo this aspect is not lost on me. It would be wise to follow the Mac or windows conventions for HID than building a poorly designed UI.

I use RGB and do late conversions to CMKY. Mostly, the mostly problem. The weakest point for me is the Illustrator like pages. Such a shame that the early influence on this design wasn't CorelDraw. Second weakest point is menu structure and workflows. If I hadn't move to Linux and Corel hadn't gone subscription I'd have jumped back to CorelDraw. Having been part of Corel beta teams, they did do major revisions to the interface but much of the work was under the hood because the design of the interface was decent from version 3 onward. I'm sorry but I think Inkscape, Corel and Adobe products all suffer the same flaw. Accumulation of wrongness in the age of computers on the desktop with massive memory and processor abilities that were not envisioned when the programs were created. And the user base has changed significantly. There was no "we might need to make this on a 3D printer" when these programs were invented. The starting point for Inkscape and the other programs was "create some component that could be used in a layout program". That's not at all what we need today. What makes CorelDraw so great is the page system. You can turn that into a scrape book for a project. Unfortunately they failed to put the resources into CorelCAD to create a Sketch-Up competitor. Reach out to Alex www.linkedin.com/in/alexvakulenko/?original_referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Egoogle%2Ecom%2F&originalSubdomain=ca He was on the team at Corel that fixed everything wrong with the program. He was always helpful and I believe he is now at Google. You might get some useful clues just from a chat. What I'd like to see in 2024 is the redefinition of creative software that starts with a foundation that is going to work into the future and is unified. Corel put a lot of effort into fussing about with colour management but they never moved dust and scratches in Photopaint from where a user wouldn't look for it under edit and put it where it belonged under filters. Years of that sort of program neglect leads to the interface failing users. "Just put it in extensions" being a clear weakness of Inkscape. The interfaces of these programs have all gone to hell. They were developed for simpler times when the programs did less. We need a radical re-envisioning of the interface into one that has flow. Davinci Resolve does this with Media, Media Prep, Sound Prep, Colorization, Edit and Effects. Where are in yesteryear in graphics. Unsorted inputs, multiple program pathways with different interfaces and everything in your face to where is it going to end up? The core interface issue is the everything on all the time display. If I'm node editing I don't need a pile of crap hanging about that has nothing to do with node editing. And when we do this stuff we expect by default there to be a web application. At least something that brings the phone into the useful range of the application. Unfortunately, and while I do understand the need for CM, I think you are wasting time, or perhaps better said, setting yourself up for the real project. The project that has the excitement level that will get contributions. "The Blank Page" Re-imagining the page. Re-imagining code in 2030 terms. Creating the spaces to expand functionality. Better embracing other open source programs. I've been watching you for a while. You need to shuffle CM to another party and focus on "the buzz" to enliven the space generally. Where as CM is a mind-blowing dull topic for 99% of users, it's not going to create the buzz needed in the space. What would be involved in creating a "smoke and mirrors" re-imagining of an interface. Albeit one where to experience the prototype you have a limited set of possible commands? Asking "how much of this crap on my screen do I need to perform this function". Imagine it as an "optional" interface feature, "workflow enhanced". If you started with a blank page you certainly wouldn't use the current rulers or scaling system. Buzz and getting contributions for boring color management isn't going to work. You need to build buzz that starts with a blank page and use the energy from that to get someone to do CM.

Just wondering , with so much hype around AI, are AI tools like chatgpt, Claude etc. not useful to find and fix CMYK issues?
@doctormo
@doctormo 3 күн бұрын
No, not in any way. Because what's needed is expertise, not grunt work. We'd still need someone with the know how to check all the work is actually correct. A lot of AI code is complete trash, and a lot of it's logic is hopelessly broken. And that doesn't each touch on the design aspects, or in the previous video's, the UX concepts that have to be researched.

@doctormo
@doctormo 3 күн бұрын
Inkscape IS svg, there is no separating svg from inkscape. SVG is not imported or exported, it is literally the internal memory of the program. As for PDF, that bugbear should go to the folks at Cairo, who rejected the notion of anything other that RGB for their PDF output.

Inkscape is powerful, but would like to see better and cleaner UI (modern like Figma or Lunacy), CMYK option for printing, Dropper tool could work like Illustrator so it can copy not only colours but everything from the object, like text for example.

I want to donate monthly in smaller amounts because it is more feasible for me to contribute a larger total in the long term that way. for example, 5$ for 12 months over 20$ maybe once a year. However, I don't support PayPal in general so I wish there was another way to do this. Either way, I will be contributing to this goal because I believe it is incredibly important to support things like this. But I wonder if there is a barrier there.

By no stretch of the imagination am I a pro at CMYK. In fact, I have very limited knowledge regarding the nuisances of CMYK. However, with that said, I found it fascinating to see other user's thought processes on what would be the ideal workflow for using it. This was a really good idea on your part Martin. I think I need to learn more about CMYK for future reference but at the moment, it is simply not something I use very often.

I really hope that Inkscape will someday has a dedicated tool that can create Editable 3D Text easily like in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. You know, 3D text effect (Beveled, Bold, Shiny, Stacked, 3D Perspective, etc.) It is possible to create 3D text effect in Inkscape for now, but it's just not convenient to do it and not editable. Clone LPE to create 3D Text Effect in Inkscape makes Inkscape forced close so much.

CMYK is essential when working with logos, as colors cannot vary from print to print. There needs to be consistency and some logos use special colors (Pantone) or even when we need to apply varnishes over details and in this case, in addition to four-color, we also have to create separate layers for these effects.

Well done for doing this. The beginner user automatic mode should also be able to flag issues that may get the file sent back again from the printer . Maybe even a list saying here is what has been set re profile name to give them a chance to match what the printer may have requested. How auto would auto be? Would it do the type of nice things the pros talked about doing every time re blacks and channels. What about images . A side by side preview would possibly be nice.

This is awesome, getting feedback from the users this way will help producing an intuitive experience for most people (hopefully). As for the beginner, I hope that the process would be more explicit, rather than selecting pdf CMYK and OK, I would like to see an indicator showing the color mode, and when the user have to go to color>convert to CMYK(or rgb if already CMYK). That way the user sees the change and can decide to export or tweak further.

The less friction I have to proof CMYK and the less menus I have to navigate to change settings, the better! My biggest qualm with modern UI designs is that things are hidden in one of multiple possible places and often times multiple layers deep. This is particularly troublesome when there is no universal search for the menu.
