In this episode of Painting Masters I'm reviewing lovely realistic watercolors by Takumi Yokooka, a Japanese watercolor painter.
I find his style to be a very interesting combination of realism and some stylization.
Highly recommend you check out his works to see what the medium is capable of.

Great presentation Liron! Thanks so much! I loved the variety of pieces you showed! The reflections, the masking, the soft edges and the hard edges were great! Lotsa “light”in these paintings! I visited Tokyo with my husband many years ago and your presentation warmed my heart! I’m a newbie painter and I’m starting to see the techniques you speak of because of your master series and your personal lessons and that excites me! You are a great teacher, artist and a good person!

I talked to Takumi San about his methods and he does indeed work heavily with masking fluid! You see it all throughout his work and I love it. I was truly honored that he returned followed me on Instagram, he is a true Japanese master 😄💖

First time I ever wanted to pet a painting. I'd love to see you do some Tokyo urban paintings and Japanese country landscapes!

I love this series, and love your enthusiasm and explanations as you go through the paintings. We definitely now know you love Japan! 😁 It doesn't really matter who you present, because they are always artists that are new to me, although I am partial to the watercolorists.

Always a pleasure to look at different artists and their work. While the photo realistic paintings were interesting to see I am not sure they were my favorites, which surprised me a little. This is why I enjoyed your masters series, I am sometimes surprised by my reactions to the work you show, which teaches me something about myself and about art.

Thanks for this video. I like your painting masters series. Your channel is very informative. It seems that by sharing from your personal journey you target advanced hobby artists who want to add to their knowledge and to improve their skills. I've not come across this Japanese painter before. The only other Japanese watercolor artist I am aware of is Shibasaki, who runs a channel on youtube as well.

Thank you for presenting all these different styles of watercolour. May I recommend looking into Roland Lee's work. His use of negative painting could be a good talking point.

I have an elderly version of that cat, when she was younger she looked exactly like that, complete with those glowy ears. Her white fur was luminous in the sun as the paint cat would also be.

Scene at 12:28 actually depicts night market in streets of Taiwan, those signs are in Chinese characters. The sign on right side of stand is a type of fig jellyish snack- Ficus pumila var. awkeotsang (not nerd enough it's from wikipedia!) which is originated in Taiwan. Very popular amongst Japanese tourists they love it when visit.

I explain the double o in Japanese by saying it’s like “bookcase” in English..put in a little stop..along w the long vowel sound..

I’m not into hyper realism in oils or acrylic...but for some reason some watercolour ‘realism’ (like the first kitten) is magic..I prefer watercolour landscapes to be more expensive generally.

Sorry to say but those landscapes has too much details for watercolor painting. Unique quality of watercolor that separates it from other mediums are not there. Just my opinion.
