I dragged out this old MTD 5 horse power rototiller and found the air filter to be a fragile wreck. I have not figured out how to replace this exact air filter ...yet. However, I bought an air filter and modified it to make it fit. The wing nut shakes loose with the vibration of the tiller. I'm certain with a little money I will be able to come up with a better plan but for now, the tiller works fine for what I want. I purchased it from my aunt for $75 after my uncle died about 6 years ago. Even without starting it up, I knew it would run because I knew him. I do have to use starter fluid for every start but I'm okay with that. This tiller has to be more than 20 years old and possibly more than 30. I have found nothing that resembles the round shape of the air filter cover.
I whoop at lot while using this tiller. It's not intentional but it is exciting to run. Every time I hit a rock it grabs and pulls and I have a lot of rocks so it's kind of a rough ride for an older woman. I feel a great deal of satisfaction being able to handle this thing. If I had to replace it brand new, I'd look for a 5 horse MTD. At the time this was made, it was built to last!
