Lieutenant Orlando Rogers (39:31 as I can spot in this video) died in 2011 in a plane crash. The man has gained huge respect from me by the way he treated his recruits. A big loss really.

In my eyes, war journalists are veterans. They're part of the war, they're there on hte battlefield just as much as anyone else...takes extreme courage to do that willingly. Great doccumentary by Chris Terrill.

Chris Terrell (the guy who made this) actually completed the commando training with the royal marines in a previous documentary (or later in this one, i cant remember when he done it) and was given an honorary green beret. Thats why they allowed him out on such dangerous missions.

Two of these recruits died in battle. 39:20, drill instructor says “good call Sparks, well done”. That was to George Sparks who was an “original” in the troop and who was killed in action in Afghanistan two years after this film was made, aged 19. `RIP. At 42;00, there is a marine “Vinders”, real name Thomas Curry who was killed in action in Afghanistan a year after the film was made.

37:52. "Smoking kills". Back in the day when I was still a smoker, I used to add a letter "s" with a marker in front of the word "kills".

Really insightful (for the viewer), it’s a shame that these young men have to do this however there’s no denying their abilities and their bravery. Thank goodness for the amazing training they get that allows them to cope with everything that’s thrown at them when they are in the war zone.

I've been trying not to miss this series of Real Stories. I like seeing these Commandos from Britain be training hard af! I mean the royal commandos been a unit that was introduced to the United States back in World War 2. The Americans noticed that they too needed a special unit also. They saw the way these men been training for years and it is freaking hard! I love it, thanks for the interesting video. Love this channel!!

Pablo Vales wtf are you talking about? They were introduced to the US during world war 2??? Hmmm. The US Marine corps was modeled after the RMs in 1775. I think you have no idea about military history.

Warrant Officer Smith who is asked to give the time check at the briefing, was killed a few weeks later. Young George Sparks from the training troop and is the first lad doing the take down in the gym, was killed the following year, and Orlando Rogers died in a flying accident about 3 years later. Not to mention Marine Curry who was killed during the making of the documentary. So four Marines in this episode are now dead

elias winters they only played it at home base and probs not loud enough for the enemy to hear. I’m sure they wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize either the mission or their troops.

@erics2305
@erics2305 6 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking as well. I guess the Royal Marines know what they're doing, but in my mind you shouldn't even go out there without air assets overhead. Then it would also be harder for the Taliban to "melt back into the landscape". The same for the night patrols. Why not just scout them out with drones? That would seem much safer than to approach within 100 m of them on foot.
@charlesarnsdorf5169

I guess the brits military budget is smaller so they have fewer assets to throw at the enemy. Those assets they do have are probably stretched thin.
@charlesarnsdorf5169
@charlesarnsdorf5169 6 жыл бұрын
Leonard Carr I’m sure there was a great deal of cooperation between the military forces present in Afghanistan, and that the RM commandos had access to air support from other militaries, but those other militaries’ first priority was to support their own troops. Would the NZ Air Force help out another military at the expense of their own troops dying?

Brave troops. They don't have the support the Americans have yet they do their jobs anyhow. Stunning to watch. I still feel that training is Very lacking with regards to preparing them for what's to come.

This documentary is great but it doesnt show you the true extent and harshness of royal marine training. Alot of it is brutal but also senstive to release to public. I can assure you the training is ALOT more thorough than you realise. It is the longest and most intense training of any western force (excluding special forces such as sas, sbs, seals etc)

Well, why not? Your weapon could jam or you could run out of ammo. Also I think it could have a psychological impact on the enemy to see the bayonets.
