Great review! I'm an engineer with a background in science, physics and a number of other disciplines in history, technical writing and electronics. So I may have a deeper appreciation than others. I did know the US General was a better quality purchase, but didn't realize how poorly made Husky tool boxes are by comparison. Husky isn't a brand name, its I believe part if a conglomeration of Stanley (not American) products made by different manufacturers. Husky hand tools were formerly manufactured exclusively in the United States starting in the 20's but are now largely made in China. US General is misleading although its quality is purportedly controlled by a higher standards from the US is also manufactured in mainland China. Historically speaking, America had the best manufacturing in the world but the trade agreements signed in 90's allowed China to purchase manufacturing and they did which would later be shipped to Asia decimating our manufacturing independence and 100 years of proven American quality. The hit to manufacturing jobs is still being felt throughout America's manufacturing industries and may never recover. America used to have some amazing engineering and it's sad we let that legacy go along with the jobs and knowledge we had.

I pick Husky but I was wrong ! After watching the video I would go with USG. But as a retired mechanic I don't need a box for daily use. USG has a way better warranty which tells me they stand behind their product.

@@nashehanes1044 I have to agree with your observations, Nashe. I worked the Quality/Materials Engineering Department in my last manufacturing job and that sort of "OCD" was part of the job description. Those pop rivet scraps and sketchy paint work would drop these Home Depot boxes off my list if they were the only gigs. The design comparisons were just the nails in that coffin.

I especially love that each drawer locks independently when you close it on the US General. I hated other brands boxes that you would have to lock the whole cabinet to keep the drawers from sliding open on their own when sitting on uneven surfaces. This setup is just way more convenient and solid

In our shop my dad and grandfather bought Craftsman,Waterloo and Williams tool chests. I have bought Matco, MAC and Snap-on chests. Recently I purchased a US GENERAL chest for my son. I was so impressed by the US GENERAL that I went back and purchased a top chest for my pickup. We are farmers and drive very rough terrain. After close inspection the other day that box is still in new condition other than chips and scratches.

OMG now that is one intense review. Great review and thanks for telling it like it is. I am an old man now (80), so I wont be buying a tool box any time soon. For years I worked as a mechanic and worked out of a Craftsman tool box with all craftsman tools. I worked next to a guy with a Snap On tool box, of which he paid a small fortune. He had every tool under the sun and was a very good mechanic. One day I came to work, and he had quit as a mechanic and was working in the parts department huh ? The Snap On truck guy loved this guy, as he always bought something off that truck. Now what really got me was a young guy working LOF and purchased a Snap On tool box just to change oil. His tool payments were more than he was making, and he soon quit and lost everything. Three tool trucks came by every month Snap On, Mac, and Matco. I worked there at that Oldsmobile dealership for about a year, then went into Law enforcement, where I retired after working 11 years, due to an accident. After retirement I began shopping at harbor freight and bought some very good tools. The price was right and HF sure has improved over the years. Yes HF has some made in China junk, but not everyone can afford made in USA. PS, Oldsmobile went out of production as we all know. I am a retired US Army officer w/ 20 years, Vietnam Vet with two purple hearts and retired Police, so I do well. After retirement I bought a huge tool box from COSTCO, can't guess where it was made, but has served me well. I enjoy watching your tool reviews, knowing I will see a fair honest review. I understand this review is about HF vs US Husky. A guy should buy what he can afford and gets the job done. ..Ken

Easily the best tool reviewer on KZfaq! You’re really taking the “cheap” stigma away from HF tools. It seems like they really started improving the quality of their tools over the last 10 years. Like we all know, HF tools were thought of as throw away tools so it didn’t matter that they were cheap overseas junk. Now we’re seeing noticeable updates and upgrades which is exciting for guys who don’t have a fortune to spend and yet still want quality tools. Well done sir! Double thumbs up!!

About a year a go I decided I needed another 42" roll around. After looking at the big box stores and Harbor frt. I bought the HF. It doesn't have some of the features you show but seems well made. The differences that I see now: no separate latches on drawers, simpler casters, I haven't measured metal gages but seems strong enough. The deal with the 2 slides on the side of the deeper drawers is that it allows them to be moved to a location that has two shallow drawers. But if you move the bottom deeper drawer up and put two shallow drawers in the place, the bottom shallow drawer will not catch the lock bar. Not a big deal for my use. HF now sells a premium line that is very nice but much more expensive.

When I moved to my new place I put in a one from each line up of general boxes in orange, A year later my favorite one so far is the Mechanics box it was also the only one I had problems with though. The metal must have missed a spot of paint prep so it bubbled. However it was under warranty. The rollers looked beefier than my old snap on cabinets I had in my machine shop and trainler. However those boxes were from the 90s so they may have changed with time. However the metal seemed to be of same quality on both of them. I was also in harbor freight the other day and they have a new lineup with the ICON name, Which had double rollers, they felt extremely strong in the drawls but they did seem like they were harder to close. Plus the price was a lot higher than the US general ones.

Anyone looking at HD for a toolbox doesn't know the first thing about quality. They just want a large volume. One thing this reviewer didn't examine is how smooth the drawers are when fully loaded. Also the depth os these boxes compared to Snap-On style true 24" deep boxes makes a huge difference to store larger power tools.
@SubversionGarage
@SubversionGarage 5 жыл бұрын
My broader point is that HD used to offer quality, and HF had the cheap tools. The US General box is twice the HD for the same money and that is a shame for HD. My 56" USG has been loaded to capacity for several years now with no problems. I am under no illusions that it is a Snap-On box, but then again it was 1/8th the price.

This review makes me laugh (in a good way) years ago I bought the HD 52" box. It buckled and collapsed one day from the tools that I had stored in it. The weight in the drawers were ok, but the bottom of the box had such thin gauge steel it couldn't handle the total weight and said it had enough. I never really looked into it back then because it was so cheap between it being a dented unit and getting military discount. I've since upgraded to a snap on box, but I'll tell ya, for the money, I'd take the HF over the snap on.

@@sparkysurvivalist9507 Snap-on used to pride themselves on quality and USA production. Now, much of the tools they sell are the same as the competition; made in Taiwan. There are only a few tools from Snap-on that are must-haves, the rest can be replaced by significantly cheaper tools.

I have been shopping at Harbor Freight for many years now, I've always felt that what I've purchased has been a good quality for the do-it-yourselfer and if I've ever had any problem with the tool I simply take it back for an Easy Exchange no questions asked if you do not have a Harbor Freight near you it is very easy to purchase online and shipping is generally quicker than indicated

Just an FYI I watched your review about a year ago and I bought the US General box! For the money it is the better deal! I'm not a professional mechanic just a DIY'er and coming from a CSPS Costco SS tall box it was a great change up! I like having a wider box that is shorter. It makes it so much easier to find tools and you have a flat surface to work on providing you don't use it as a storage shelf! I looked at the Husky and after I found your review the choice was obvious. Thanks for doing all of the heavy lifting (Research) made my job a lot easier. A year in and no regrets!

Great vid. Huge difference in the boxes for basically the same price point.. If you want a stainless top on a box pick up a piece of 11ga and then you still have the useful lip around the perimeter..

I initially thought that Husky would be better as far as quality, but not capacity. I was wrong. The US General was better than my Craftsman from Sears...had to replace it 2 times before I got one that was able to handle the tools and roll without losing a caster. Good review.

Nice review and I concur; I looked at both the HF and the Husky. The Husky is not as well built, and for me, the drawers would have sagged in the middle in some cases. I got 2 HF US General boxes in 56 wide (the chest and the cabinet) and kept them, but also got matching tool cart, but I sold that because it was ok, but didn't really do what I wanted. I ended up buying the Icon 36 in tool chest, which is a complete beast, way overkill for this home mechanic and will outlast my mechanical aspirations. Its as good as I could ever ask, lifetime warranty and so on. But, it is stronger in every dimension than even the US General boxes that I also own. Solid bit of work in this video.

I have been wanting to replace my 1970's Craftman tool boxes for years. I built a trolly frame on wheels to load 2 tall stacked Craftsman boxes together just so I could get my tools closer to the projects without having to walk all the way across my 60' wide shop just for one tool. Even added one of the Harbor Freight hang on side box on it and that HF side box, with it''s roller bearing drawers, outclasses those old non ball bearing Craftman boxes. So been thinking of just yard selling the Craftsman boxes off and putting some hard earned cash on the 72" HF Box with the big top box. Have it figured that almost all my tools will fit in that set up. Currently using 6 Craftsmans spread all over the shop now. Each with specific tools for that area. Well, almost. Thanks for the review. Now to just find a Coupon to get an even better deal on them.

I’m a traveling welder and have always had the standard “gang box “ style tool box , but I have been looking at changing over to one of these styles of box .They would be moved frequently from job to job and the ease of finding the tools that I need would be a lot quicker with a drawer type box. This video is exactly what I needed to help with the decision process. I appreciate the fact that you guys went into so much detail with your comparison. All my tools are investments and most aren’t cheap. Although there are a couple of things I liked more on the Husky, overall, I think that the General would be a better overall box for the abuse that it might encounter over time. Thanks for this wonderful comparison. Really great job.

Excellent excellent excellent review top-notch quality. I have not been into a Harbor Freight store in many years, I had no idea that they had this type of hardware. Sounds to me like they got their customer service thing locked down too. They just opened up a new store about 10 miles from me, I'm going to have to swing by and check out their stuff. Thanks for putting this video out.

Had a Husky top box for about 20 yrs. Used it for field work too. When I got a bigger top box I gave the Husky to my dad. He mounted it on his welding truck. It was on his truck for at least 10-15 yrs and it was still on the truck when he finally sold his truck and welder. Tough box. The drawers never did break down or crack.

I have been a mechanic since the mid 70's and own 95% Snap On . I have tried others and always gone back. The past couple years I went from automotive to Heavy Equipment and needing new tools that I can trash I started buying Harbor Freight and I have noticed a difference in their quality. They are improving but I have never considered Husky to have anything other than poor quality. Good review.

I have Snap-On as well and I can tell you, even though I'm not employed as a mechanic and need the convenience of a Snap-On truck every week, the value of Snap-On has gone down over the years as other tool companies have emerged. Capri, Gear Wrench, Astro and several other makes are carrying much more value in their products when compared to Snap-On and the tool truck convenience. No question Snap-On are quality hand tools...however, I can find a comparable long 1/4" ratchet wrench for about $80 less than the Snap-On and be just as satisfied. These US General tool boxes are quality sturdy sheet metal and have great features that truly make one wonder why they would spend twice or three times for other makes.

I own a Harbor Freight 41" wide bottom cabinet, 41" wide top box, and a 16 1/2" wide side box. I've worked out of them for 13 years, and never had a problem with any thing. My total cost was around $1000.00 for all three boxes. MONEY WELL SPENT!! I'm retired, and when I think back to the days of multiple tool boxes, some tools here, some more over there, some under a workbench, etc., I wish I could have bought these, a really long time ago. AND all my U.S.GENERAL, toolboxes, roll with ease any where I needed them, to work on my BIG TRUCKS!! (simi's)
