Just doing it is what matters, every weld you lay down makes you a better welder. there is no short cut to experience. I was thinking that the grinding step was seeming to introduce a LOT of heat. But other than that, I didn't see anything really wrong with what you were doing brother! Great Job!
@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker Жыл бұрын
This car has been one big learning experience. I’ve always been decent at welding thicker material but sheet metal is a different animal all together. I have learned to ease up on the grinding, pretty sure it caused some decent warpage on a few panels.
@fieldcars3301
@fieldcars3301 3 жыл бұрын
doing the plug welds all in one motion is correct and looked good the open butt weld would have turned out much better if you cooled the welds after each pass same as grinding that generates a lot of heat so you can't hit it until it turns blue lol We have the same problem I think, we set goals (I want to do this side at least today) and then we push to hit the goal Slow down just a bit and you'll come out ahead in the end

Good job Gary! It is very difficult to avoid overheating such thin sheet metal. My dad was telling me about a clay that some people use when doing body panel replacement. It helps to draw the heat to the clay rather than through the metal. I have also seen people use a wet rag and hold it near the area where they are tacking. And resoaking the rag in bucket of cold water between tacks.

It is looking great, Wherever possible, I usually clamp a block of copper behind what I'm tacking, it works as a heat sink and the weld doesn't stick to it. I use a wet rag to cool down where I have just welded also. I'm definitely no pro and will still need a thin skim of bondo.

Your definitely on the right track , tack your panels and then keep your spot welds as far apart as possible to keep the heat down ,I like to use a thin grinding wheel on edge so you are only hitting the weld , once you get it close to flat then you can go over it all with your disk or flap Too much heat is the enemy but all that being said , 20 gauge panels are gonna warp it is what it is. It happens, dont be hard on urself. I would say slow down, have an air nozzle with ya and weld and blow it with air, its fast and way less messy than water. Try it, get you a pattern/rhythm going, weld weld blow, weld weld blow. And go one way acorss the panel, not back and forth because those outside welds are barely cool and your coming back beside them and welding again. And as hard as it is, i know, if ur weld blows some out, dont sit there and fill it back up, zap it and cool it zap it and cool it. You got this bro, only one thing happened, heat, everything else you got. Next time kill that heat and you will have the results you seek, nuthin but a skim coat of glazing. Cool vid, I just welded my quarter patches tuesday tho, so ur a day late. lol. Peace bro!

Those patch panels are not the best. The bottom part of it is really designed to replace that section of the heater channel also. kind of a dual patch piece. i cut mine right above the bolt hole so i could mimic the factory welds between the quarter panel and heater channel. that helped me align them better. the nut on the back of the bottom was keeping the back out some. Hopefully that makes sense.

Hi Gary watched your video was great, I can’t work on mine at this time cause I have had a shoulder replacement surgery that didn’t go well so at this time I’m just left handed. I do have a couple questions was you panels 20 gauge? And what kind of heat where you using on you welder? Having hard time to write this Jim Doggett

Oh man, I sure hope you heal up quickly Jim!! Pretty sure the panel was 20 gauge. I looked at the chart on my welder for 20 gauge and practice welded a few spot welds and tweaked the settings until they sounded like sizzling bacon.

looking good. I am also struggling at body work but there are a lot of great channels to watch with great tips.one of my favorite guys is kzfaq.info. your on the right track as it is. I tried to cool every tack weld with a damp cloth as I went but still got waves doing the exact same repair you were doing. I will use my spotter and shrinking disk to get it as close as I can then filler will do the rest. keep up the good work its encouraging to see this happening in a 2 car garage.

I should have used a damp towel or a spray bottle as someone else mentioned, but when it came time to do the work, I forgot. Go figure lol There are some great channels out there for welding tips, I’m diving in more recently. Appreciate the tips and the link. Thanks for always being here and so supportive.

Gary, Great skillful video as usual. Really talented man. Just side question, are you using a gas Mig welder or gasless one ? Your machine is really good. Cheers from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺.

I appreciate that greatly. I have a few skills but I’m definitely not an expert. I’m running a gas mig but this can be done with flux core as long as you’re careful.

Thanks a lot Gary. Mine is flux core and I am having hard time with it, to much spatter and not consistent... anyways thanks a lot.

@@FunFun-tv7gq check out Duckman, he did his entries build with flux core. It can be done, just more clean up and you really need to dial in the settings.

My heater channels are decent until you get to the frame head aka the hat , my question is would you patch or replace the whole channel thanks
@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker Ай бұрын
They do make repair sections of you can find them that way you don’t have to replace the entire channel.
