i feel you, i use reason sience 2001, maybe not the shortest way, for advanced is one of the best, stil not the cheapest. price for software ok, but the extras programms not cheap, even i not got the money to buy wrong programs, so i used stil basic and free, for drum i stil need a good device, im not have find the solution i want, and stil not chan choose the right way, it ends always by a dead track, to much settings and soundcard give up crack around or leggs around and nothing sounds like the day befor i create it, dont know why, ok i got a gamer pc, maybe the soundcard from motherboard is the problem,

Good overview, I use both, which is the best of both worlds. Once Reason is upgraded to support VST3, there will be even more flexibility. The real lesson here is that all DAWS have their own flavours and can provide different inspirations.

As a Reason 10 user, the one thing that makes me keep looking at other DAWs and particularly Ableton, is the lack of proper midi controller support for Reason. Even the newly announced Arturia Minilab 3, which supposedly has support for Reason, comes with a number of major compromises: 1) there's no "main knob" to alter whichever software UI knob/fader/button that is currently focused - in fact, you technically can't even focus on an element of the UI in Reason, you can only focus the entire instrument/effect. Imagine the ability to click on *any* item on the screen and twist a knob to tweak that value. That would 10X the tactility of Reason! 2) the automapped are hardcoded to certain things in a clumsy way. For example, in Europa, the knobs only map to the first of three synth engines. If you shift focus to engine 2, you'd expect the knobs on the Minilab 3 to control that engine, but no, Reason has this set up so that every knob has a unique identifier (e.g. Engine2Shape, Engine3Shape, rather than "CurrentEngineShape"). This limits the use of the hardware controls. 3) Although the rotaries are endless on Minilab 3, in Reason, they still remember their most recent state so if you flick back and forth difference instruments, the encoders on screen will still jump. Apparently there is no setting for "catch/scale" modes for knobs in Reason, it's only "jump". 4) The faders act the same way, they cause a mix channel to jump to the physical position of the fader. Minilab 3 was just an example to illustrate the point: in Reason, you're basically stuck with using the mouse and keyboard for the most part, any midi controller integration will be clumsy and less tactile. In Ableton Live, it seems that these things are much more thought-through, and midi controller manufacturers take the time to integrate their hardware really well with Live. I wish Reason would collaborate more closely with hardware manufacturers.

I’ve been a Reason user since version and one a perpetual license of R12. I also own an older license of Ableton (7 I think). The one thing I really like about Ableton is the clip launcher and being able to build song up as a performance by launching midi and audio snippets and recording the results. I sincerely wish that was a feature reason had available, especially with Blocks so you could play experimentally and then sequence the results in chunks. One feature in Reason that doesn’t get enough attention is the ability to chop and juggle parts of Blocks and player sequencer lanes. You can remix existing content and shuffle parts around super easily, with barely an inconvenience, to break those static loops into something more exciting.

One of the best thing about Reason's sequencer is it's low learning curve. I remember using it all the way back in 2003 (for the first time) and I pretty much already knew how to work it without reading anything. Ableton has a higher learning curve. I remember really needing to read the manual, look at videos, and come up with a good workflow to get to grips with it. That said Ableton is a great ergonomical sequencer once you get the hang of it. But yes Reason has friendlier synths vs Ableton's (whose many synths like Wavetable can be a bit uninviting in their workflow). Reason's has some of the best synth GUI designs that invite tweaking. But I feel Ableton has much friendlier Samplers than Reason's (although Reason is getting there with Mimic)

I'm sure you meant to say monophonic when talking about reasons pitch editor and quick tip for some midi rooting options in reason: There is the midi out device for pushing midi to external devices and a free player: cv player tap by lectric panda, for midi note over cv. This said, I have no knowledge of live 11's midi rooting so can't compare them. Neither DAW is screen reader friendly but personally I have found reasons midi remote a great help.

I've been with Reason since V2. I'm working on my 9th album produced in Reason. The main reason I rely on on Reason 12 as my primary DAW is due to the ability to automate nearly any parameter of any native Reason synth, effect or utility. This gives me MASSIVE control over sound design and performances. I simply have not learned how to do that in Presonus Studio One v4, my other DAW, because its so stupid simple to do in Reason. Great video, thank you!

The longer I've made music in a DAW, the more I learn it comes down to taste and which program you know best. I think Reason is far more limited than Live in a workflow and feature sense, but those things force creativity sometimes as much as they can slow you down. Sonically, I make better music in Live. I just prefer using it too, so even though I started on Reason 1.0 it's just the rack I use anymore.

I would only add that, you dont need to manually route things with cables in Reason - you can right click and choose from pop up menu same as Ableton. Since Reason made the SSL console and added audio tracks to the sequencer I dont see the point in using anything else - its a lot more intuitive than anything else Ive seen and has basically everything you need out of the box.

Used reason for years but moved over to live 3 years ago. I have reason 12, use the plugin but only open the daw its self for the pitch editor as it is very good but even that is rare. I've tried cubase, fruity, logic and bitwig, and live wipes the floor with them. Friends that swore by logic tend only use it now for mastering as they are used to their mastering chain after making everything in live. Reason for me seems more like a service like native instruments. Wouldnt surprise me that reason becomes pluging + service al together in years to come. I think reason 13 will be a good acknowledgement of this as any update for 12 will no doubt be bug fixes of new devices on plus package.

For the price, Reason. I haven't upgraded since V10, because there hasn't been enough to be worth upgrading. At some point if they don't get their act together, I may switch to Ableton, but as a whole I've been very happy with Reason for years. Compare it to Pro Tools that completely stopped inovating about a decade ago, and it's definitely the way to go for full production. Though, if I was just doing a lot of analog tracking of musicians, it would NOT be my first choice for mixing an album. But for productions where you're going to create most of your sound within the DAW, Reason, hands down.

I agree, and I'm also still on 10. I paid something like 250 EUR in total by first grabbing a used license off of eBay and then paying for an upgrade. Honestly, for that kind of money, what you get in Reason 10 is simply incredible. I don't really miss much, the only thing that makes me look at Ableton with envy is the incredible midi controller support. I wish Reason was less mouse-and-keyboard heavy.

@jsmacks11
@jsmacks11 2 жыл бұрын
Me too. Live Piano Roll gets alot of hate. I understand though, it is simple and barebones, but Live's piano Roll can be extremely fast for drum programming and has alot of clever features such as "Fold notes", "Reverse/Invert notes", and "Note Probability". It's envelope editing is fairly unique as well. And for just correcting the occaisional bad note it works well but I guess for someone who composes directly from the Piano Roll, I can see how it can be tedious. Ableton's piano roll come accross as more basic than it really is because it lacks a toolset but most of the basic tools are there, they are just key commands.

I kinda find myself wishing that, as a user of Ableton 11 suite with perpetual licence Reason 12 (since v2!) that the two companies would merge and become ReasonAble. I much prefer Reason's physical representations and interactions. The older Ableton goes on the more dated and fixed it's UI has become. Like how the tv show Space 1999 looked futuristic in 1975, but now it just looks like 1975. (I realize you are too young to know what Space 1999 is so have fun with that google hahah) I just find nothing about Ableton's instruments is intuitive for me, like how approaching a Reason virtual rack IS, because I started on physical gear. I understand why Ableton appealed to non-musicians who wanted to DJ or arrange pre existing loops into their own "song", but I myself never use clips in Ableton... I prefer to write my own. If I wanna do an instrumental beat that sounds like it bit from a 70s soul track, I write a 70s soul track and produce it to 70s specs and sample it. Then I end up with two songs!!! Anyway, this video is great and you are really helping me re-integrate Live back into my work flow after a long absence. Appreciate it!

well, Ableton UI are like that for a reason. when you're doing a Live Performance, you don't want hundreds of your plugins trashing around on your screen. or having to constantly scroll your screen or opening 5 menus in the middle of your live performance. you want a simple cohesive plugin sit and organized nicely at the bottom. you can see all of the button in just a glance. that's what the other DAW didnt' get in every steps on your workflow, you always can see everything in one page. that's the beauty of it. Ableton shouldn't have a flashy UI like reason. it's already good. it's allow you to compose your song on Stage, improvising everything, tweaking every knob with ease. if you use other DAW for a live performance, you'll be screwed.

I wish there was a bit more about the synths and and sonic quality between the two. That's what I'm mostly interested in learning about. Reason's synths are awesome, but do Live's synths compare or are they even better? What about the preset patches? Reason has a ton of presets but I'm unfamiliar with how they compare to Ableton's in terms of number and quality. WIth reason+ you also get new patches every week. How does that compare to Ableton's ecosystem of sounds/ Reason also has a ton of loops, but they seem to have never been updated since the early 2000s! Does Ableton have a large loop bank/ are they more modern and frequently updated? I was also surprised to hear you say that Reason's piano roll blows Live's out of the water. All I hear is people complain about Reason's piano roll. I believe you were mistaken to think nobody would watch a 30 minute video comparing the two. People are really passionate about their DAW loyalties lol.

Ableton comes with some banger stock loops and one shots, the presets are garbage but the stock plugins are arguably the best out of any DAW, also the workflow and customization far outweighs reason and is similar to Protools (which you need to know to be a producer). Ableton also runs every VST in existence where Reason only supports VST2. Reason might have better stock sounds but Abletons features and stock FX/Mixing plugins are far better, it’s a top 3 DAW for a reason. Its not worth buying Reason if you intend on being an industry or studio producer, definitely fell off. TLDR: Wouldn’t recommend Reason if you can afford ableton, and even then I would look into the Splitit option.

Was trying to find a comment/question a while back on your channel can't find it but have major issue now as a total non-professional / amateur acoustic tinkerer trying to learn the fine arts of DAW music production for my own songs and music I paid $1 for a reason plus for one month not intending to keep it forever as I don't believe in renting software however I have been drawn to the instruments of reason 12 for a week or so I can't get myself off the laptop even though I'm not producing any songs or beats I'm just finding my way around and I am just totally immersed in the fabulous sounds of these instruments and from what I gather most people do not like reason studios but there's just something to me about the sounds they are just totally different and I find them exciting from a possibility point of view of what could be done with the instruments but now I have a dilemma as there is a Black Friday sale for $270 US dollars for reason 12 and that is an upgrade from my Reason 12 LITE and it's not a good time of year to be spending money and I wanted to pay a little bit more to upgrade native instruments komplete 13 ultimate to 14 for 399 US dollars but that will be cut 50% at the new year even though I am just a newbie but this reason 12 I don't know why so many people are trashing it but maybe it's because I'm not a professional maybe it's because I haven't produced any of my own songs or beats but I'm just blown away and just totally immersed in the instruments and just everything I've reason 12 and I bought FL studio and bitwig last year and a few others but I've never been so drawn to the particular sounds of a DAW like this reason 12 I don't know what it is it's just magic I find them so exciting the possibility in my mind of what I could do with all these sounds like a kid in a candy shop and I'm thinking to myself do I just rent for another couple of months at 20 bucks US or do I buy the full version of reason 12 but then again as far as I know you don't get the friktion instruments and things like that of which are just totally awesome so I'm in a bit of a dilemma and I know that you can't tell me what to do but I was hoping you could wave a magic wand lol ... The reason I have been slacking is because I have a home Enterprise in fashion design of which brings in the money but my heart and soul is in music but I need to do the designing but I find it monotonous and yet I don't get a dime from music and I just want to tinker around with reason 12 all day everyday but obviously I can't so I really really need to concentrate on time management between financial job and budding music production hobby possibly more. I haven't seen anybody else that has been immersed and excited by reason 12 instruments and sounds so maybe it's just me as I've never lived life inside a stereotypical box LOL anyway I just needed to touch base. I might as well as this question not that it applies to me at the moment but can you use the music packs of reason 12 sorry the sound packs can you use them in commercial projects and get revenue with them or are they restricted ? But anyway I must be the only person in the universe who is blown away with the instruments of reason 12 particularly things like friktion and believe it or not grain sample manipulator ? I've got this weird stuff going on in my head that I could do with all these sounds and Europa and many others I don't know what it is but they're just fabulous so ... Reason plus for a few more months till I've got some more money or splash out on the Black Friday sale $279 US dollars and then I'll have to buy the friktion and others LE SIGH :) I'm like a magpie in a candy shop but hey I don't have any other vices anymore old age strikes anyway have a fantastic week

Reason has great sounds, luckily you can use it as a plugin. Komplete is a great investment as well. I would upgrade Komplete before Reason as there’s more variety. If you’re into synths, Reason could be more fun for you. You can use those sounds freely on both platforms. There are no royalties for using presets or loops from them.

@@KickbackCouture just thought I would touch base with you to say that for the first time in a long long time I found a DAW as it is with reason 12 with the contents of the reason plus version and although I'm not a pro and although I've never earned a dime I have been totally infatuated and immersed in the recent plus version particularly and probably solely the instrument packages that come with the reason plus version and I was going to buy a perpetual license with the Black Friday sale but the perpetual license version of Reason 12 has got only a few instruments and all the ones I love I would have to buy and at this time in my life I just can't afford it without breaking the bank not to say that maybe after Christmas I could rake up the money but if I add up all the instruments and everything else I'm going to be talking maybe 800 New Zealand dollars and I have wasted so much money on software over the years especially the last three or four and now that I have actually sat down and looked at all the software I am just so in love with the reason 12 plus version but obviously I can't afford $20 a month which in New Zealand dollars is 40 because I have commitments but I understand fully the dilemma of a lot of musicians amateur musicians who just cannot afford the very very high price on the softwares and I was on the verge of perhaps selling two of my three phones but I don't really want to do that probably because I will feel bad about it but it just means that I'm going to have to buckle down and dressmake and earn money but I mean it's going to be next year maybe and I'm just pretty gutted that time is not on my side with these sales and I'm just absolutely gutted because I bought bitwig studio last year and FL studio all plugins but I paid my dollar for reason plus downloaded it and then canceled the reason plus subscription and it runs out I think the 3rd of December but the basic reason 12 perpetual is just basic and those extra instruments that come with the reason plus package are just stunningly beautiful to my ears and I'm just gutted I mean as pathetic as it sounds I just want to sit down and cry because I just so wanted to spend a few hours a day to get my head around the fine arts of music production and I'm not without software I have quite a bit but I have been silly and frivolous with my spending but I have just fallen in love with those instruments that come with reason plus. I do have the R2R but that's probably swearing on this channel lol but I will take another look at finances but to people that don't earn a dime from music it's really really tough and I was thinking about people who don't even get any money in third world countries and I understand why people go to R2R and others thought I wanted to do the right thing and I absolutely love the instruments in the reason plus version but to buy the perpetual license would mean that I would have to individually buy all those instruments that I love so much I'm just gutted. I will try and work something out but with Christmas 4 weeks away it's tough and there's so much to do so much to pay out but I'm pretty gutted but anyway software is so expensive. Feel free to delete this post that I just wanted to let you know my dilemma and I think there must be many other people in the same dilemma but without those instruments reason 12 is just another DAW but the ones that come with the reason plus are quite spectacular for my ears anyway. Have a beautiful week and I'll let you know if I have a scrape up the money and I do have the money but it's cutting it fine with what I have to pay out with this and that I'll see if I can earn some more money with my dressmaking but anyway take care.

I track in Reason so I can tweak tuning, and timing on the go. I'm starting to mix more in Reaper because the Reason rack gets stupid clunky in large sessions and Reaper is much leaner and faster at comping and chopping clips.

VEry sound advice,Thanks! On another note,Question or statement aside here: If one is using great instruments and or sound modules in the first place and posseess true either talent or capacity,then why confuse one's self with So many options? Oh I understand,the software packages are all incentivised but still. Well thanks very to the points comparisons..

if you mixed them together its would wipe out every other daw . im a old user and came from fairlight cmi and synclaver, ppg days. Reason is the winner in production but Live is the best live performers choice.

Reason hurry up add VST 3 and midi routing. They need to add note change on the Redrum, Mimics needs to follow tempo and chop with notes, and update the sequencer and piano roll.

ABleton. But i use reason as a plugin when I want to use reason devices or synths. I've been using them both from the beginning and this was before reason really had Daw features. When they added them I was already entrenched in ableton and even though I tried to work with Reasons daw it just wasn't for me. I used to also rewire everything to work with both back in the day. It was always fidley. thankfully its no longer a thing. I can just open Reason in Ableton.

I use both but one thing that pisses me off about Ableton is that it grabs all the pc sound outputs for itself. Regardless of sample rate used When using reason I can play videos and other music files locally or from browser I.e youtube without any bother. With Ableton nothing but Ableton will play until I close Ableton.

i've spent a fortune on reason perpetual plus many K's of REs and I want to try ableton but only have the LITE version and there comes a time after shelling out 10K ish over 5 years where one says DO I GO TO THE DARK SIDE for the remainder of software to revolutionize the cost of it all ? i mean, ableton suite is 809 USD and for a NON pro that's a few months spending dosh .... Maybe I should EXPAND what I already have but just wanted to try ableton but the price of all this is insane, there comes a time when that R2R devil on your shoulder whispers DO IT, DO IT LOL, I'm Legal Beagle, SO FAR, but the dark side of software calleth. Is there really any question which daw is better? Its obviously ableton, with the fact that with some mathmatics you can create any instrument you could ever dream of with the stock instruments effects and max for live. There is a reason the top of the line private music schools are ableton oriented. Its the best daw hands down for producing electronic music, the only thing that comes close is pro tools but mainly for cinematic reasons.

In Ableton i can click on any piece of audio in the sequencer and it will tell me where to find that audio in its folder location, I cant do this in Reason, also in Reason the audio doesnt even get assigned its name by default, you have to actually type into every audio clip in the sequencer its name ! Imagine if you have 50 different pieces of Audio in a mix, you are having to manually type in 50 times the audios name, this seems like a real pain in the ass.

Reason is a great DAW. But I’m baffled that it doesn’t have vst3 in 3rd quarter of 2022. The program cost $500 without vst3. While Ableton live gets better with every update. I just upgraded to suite and I find myself opening reason less these days. Started with FL so it’ll always be installed on my machines
