Hey guys :) I’m back with another Dental Assisting video 🦷 because I haven’t done one in a while but these things NEED TO BE KNOWN! These are very important factors to consider before you sign up and spend money to become a Dental Assistant. I am now 6 months on the job so many things are popping up that I wish had been disclosed to me before 😬

I miss being a DA; I'm in hygiene school after 10 LONG yrs. Remember, a Dr should never correct.... humiliate or yell @ you, especially in front of a patient. The first time confront him/her the 2nd time FIND ANOTHER JOB - don't stay in an abusive relationship... Lol

Congrats on hygiene school! But well everyone in the office and even in my school, made it seem like drs disrespecting you was like a right of passage. Like something that is unavoidable. So that’s why I just thought this is how things are until i stop making mistakes I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ but thanks for the advice 💕

A doctor should never disrespect u , I have been a DA for 5 years and no doctor has ever be littled me , yes they have corrected me but not by yelling but communicating what I should’ve done, if they make a mistake it is on THEM not u honey , I watched this video just saying what the whole time , honey I would leave that dental office if they treated u like that. Yes it is part of working as a team and I have never felt as if I was at the bottom

Girl, I remember when i was a first time no experience dental assistant. I got hired on the spot because I wanted to know what the dental field looked like, since I transferred majors. That shit was tough. I cried in the bathroom almost everyday and cried to my parents and so. Had another dental assistant bully me and belittle me almost everyday for months and wouldn't try to teach me how to be a better DA or all of thing to know about dental assisting. That time I was also getting my prereqs. done for Dental Hygiene. This other DA kept telling me i'll never make it to dental hygiene school etc... Great video girl! I felt this.

The Matrix, hi hello! Thank you and I appreciate it. It really opened my eyes to the outlook of some dental offices. But just because someone is bullying or discouraging your career, never ever listen to them. Never doubt yourself or what your capable of. Also that is very exciting that your applying your DH program! I wish you all the best! I would say math chemistry or physics you necessarily won’t need in DH, mainly focus on your sciences. Usually, you’ll need one accredited math course to still be qualified for DH, but that typically is a college algebra class. The higher the grades you get in your prerequisites in your sciences the better chance you’ll get accepted into a dental hygiene program. It just depends how competitive the school your applying to. Last thing, dental hygiene is in the healthcare field and you don’t have to be extroverted, but you’ll have to be sociable. Again, I wish you the best!

Agree with you 100% I’ve been in the dental field for over 3 years and you really do have to have a tough shell to work in this field because what they say can really get to you. Luckily the doctor I’ve been with these last 2 years was always really patient with me and now we work really smoothly but in the beginning it was very nerve wracking. I think a major red flag that an office is toxic is when they ask you things like "can you handle constructive criticism?" I am new to DAing and that's tossed around like salad by Dentists and lead DA's. There is absolutely NO NEED to be rude to other people especially if they know you are learning. This field is stuck in the 1970's and definitely needs a cultural make-over.

Hey girl! Love your page! I'm sorry that you've had some negative experiences! Prior to becoming a dentist I worked as a DA for ~10 years in a family practice and I do agree that it is difficult at first because every dentist has their own way of doing a procedure/ particular instruments they prefer. I have never had a dentist blame me/ yell at me and I really hope it gets better for you or you are able to find another practice with a kinder team! It should NOT be the dental assistant's fault if a procedure goes wrong/ the wrong tooth is extracted/wrong prescription given... it is 100% the responsibility of the dentist, it comes with the job! Looking forward to seeing more videos from you!

What I have found through my 9 year journey as a D.A is learn to know your purpose on a personal level and know that it’s a value. THIS is self esteem. High self esteem leads to confidence. If a provider has to berate you, this is low self esteem on their part. Take the high road, confront that for their benefit. If they can’t take that well, move on up to something better with the pain you purchase. 🙂

I’m starting with cleaning instruments and rooms first, but I’m scared to work with patients! I am so disappointed I didn't get to watch this video before being hired back in June. I started as an intern and after completing my 45 hours, the doctor liked how I did and hired me. But sadly everything went wrong. The dentist yelled at me for not doing things right, how I "wasn't using my brain",not using common sense. I was treated like shit and I felt stupid. She told me that I am working with her for a month now and that I can't do anything right. I wanted to cry and had a mental breakdown a week later. I wanted to leave the job and do something else, but I wanna keep trying. I know how you feel and being a dental assistant is really, really tough.

Sigh, unfortunately alot of doctors say that “ use your common sence” like I’m sorry we didn’t study this for YEARS like they did. But fr though it takes time to get things right, and even then you will mess up here and there. My coeworker has been A DA for 4 yrs now I think and she still messes up here and there. But even though there alot of mean doctors, there are some really nice down to earth ones ( especially the dentist fresh out of school xD ) so don’t get discouraged! I'm a dental assisting graduate with my RDA as of two years ago but I couldn't ever find a job until February of this year but it was a horrible place to work for because the doc made me administer nitrous without a certification and it was to the point where I quit on the spot and went back to my retail job and now my chances of finding another office are below zero so I think I need to do something else but I don't know what.

I totally agree "WHY NOT BE A DENTAL ASSISTANT " this is 10th year of my dental assistant. I like the dental procedure itself . not all of it like you said. has to be very strong heart and strong soul. I am looking for a chance to be a hygienist. but I feel kind of boring, but they got more respect. hygienist is much more simple job than dental assistant. so, good luck!

Im on my last week of my 3rd module of dental assisting school and despite having my CPR, HIPAA,and infection control certifications I’m ready to quit because of all the pressure and responsibility put on dental assistants. It’s too much stuff to remember. The multiple repercussions for a mistake isn’t worth the anxiety to me.

this is true it can happen, ive experienced some of it myself also however it is possible to find a clinic that you wont get mistreated. once you realise it is about the dr and not about yourself it gets easier, in australia doctors are definitely accountable not the nurses. its definitely is not as easy as it looks.

Wendy C hiii i just saw this and since I posted this it’s been good they have me suctioning and learning to assist the dentists it’s a small office I work with only two doctors and 3 rooms but overall the staff is very nice and helpful they even gave me a book of info about the instrument names and what they are used for I just have so much trouble memorizing tray setups and also knowing when to go assist which room to seat the patient in and with speed because it’s fast especially on a booked day:(

all those reasons is why I decided to quit my last job as a dental assistant and come back to puerto rico and focus on studying so I don't have to handle that from anyone... In my case the other assistant wanted me to be her slave just because she was a doctor in her country and she's been an assistant in the US for only 4 months and the doctor also was doing what she wanted. I worked 11 hour shifts and did not even eat anything because everyone would go to lunch and leave me with 3 patients at the same time alone. Not for me.

I feel like memorizing the tools to hand the doctor is so confusing sometimes
@MelanieLunaDiaz
@MelanieLunaDiaz 3 жыл бұрын
Thats the same thing that happened to me! I got hired in my internship place when I had no experience, and I felt like I ddnt learn anything in school. And I spent only about 8 months there before going to an Endodontic office (where I am at now) having not done a single root canal by myself! So I didn’t know any instruments or steps. So here are the tips xD take a picture of the instruments and write down the names of them beneath the pics. Then try to pinpoint a defining feature from each instrument to make it easier to remember. And finally just write down the steps you see the doctor doing. Writing the steps over and over again really helps memorization and such! I hope this helped /).(\

Listen when the doctor is doing an emergency exam the assistant can leave an sterilize, stock the rooms, look over schedule see what’s happening, being an assistant is wonderful!! I love it but I don’t play with anyone who tries to be bossy to me or disrespect me!!!! So watch it!

The law actually does not prohibit your boss from yelling at or insulting you. Before anything else, talk to them and explain to them that what they are doing makes you feel uncomfortable and you want them to stop. If they don’t stop and are making discriminatory comments or are bullying you or threatening you then I suggest talking to HR because that is not okay whatsoever. Also read over the company/office policy thoroughly so that you can protect yourself at all times.
