I just want to say kudos to this man for answering so many questions .. you don’t often see that on videos like this. I’m looking into purchasing a pulse charger to revive a battery that I know is below 7volts and I saw, on another video, that while other chargers may not start the process if the voltage is too low - this one will. I also like that it can also do a trickle charge so it’s very versatile. It does cost a little more than the others but it’s worth it, to me, not to be concerned that I’ll get the charger and end up having to return it because it wasn’t able to detect my battery.

BTW. the green led information: The blinking green LED is just showing that the charger is in the Optimization portion of the charge. This can last for up to 48 hours. it happens right after the initial charge is complete, and anytime during Maintenance when the charger is 'topping' the battery off. This is a low current trickle charge that fully saturates the battery, repopulates the ions to the plates, and mixes the electrolyte bringing up the specific gravity. A good analogy is it's like pouring a beer into a glass. You fill the cup and then have to wait for the foam to go down before you can pour more beer into the glass. Then let the foam settle and you can add a little more, and so on.

I hooked this up to a battery I've had sitting for almost 2 years, and it's been blinking slowly for almost a day now. Good to know that it's normal. I wasn't sure if maybe I had to do the repair or not, because it had been blinking for so long. Anyhow, when it's fully-charged and I can use it, the green light will have finally stopped blinking and just stay solid, then? The other lights will turn off?

Thanks for the review. I just got a Gen 5 to try to bring the 12V battery in my 2019 Honda Clarity back to life. It went dead from prolonged disuse during lockdown. I wasn't sure what mode to try but went with 12V (the first one) since I couldn't find any info saying my battery was a different kind. It failed to charge on the first try, which was not unexpected. I then tried force mode. After 5 minutes of LEDs blinking as expected, instead of entering regular charge mode it started a pattern of LED blinking that was not in the manual or anywhere else I could find. The 12V LED (the first one) blinked fast a couple times, then blinked in unison with the 25% charged LED. Once those two were blinking together (slowly), they would alternate with the standby LED blinking. So the blinking pattern was 25% plus 12V, then standby, repeat, with an occasional solo flash of the 12V LED mixed in. Do you have any idea what might be going on? I don't know if there's something special I don't know about since my vehicle is a hybrid, if I'm doing something wrong, if this relatively new battery is beyond help, or if my Gen5 might be defective. (To be clear, it is only the "regular" 12V battery I'm attempting to charge, not the special batteries that make the vehicle a hybrid.)
@marcusmonkeyman6907
@marcusmonkeyman6907 3 жыл бұрын
I did not figure out what the undocumented LED pattern meant, but I accomplished my original goal by disconnecting the car's clamp from the negative terminal and trying again with the Gen5. With that set-up, the 12V battery charged as expected and pretty soon I was able to reconnect the negative terminal clamp and start the car. I didn't top off the battery yet because I was impatient to drive, but it's good to know I can if needed.

@@marcusmonkeyman6907 I think the problem may have been your car itself drawing on the battery while the charger was attempting to put amperage into it. I was waiting on NOCO's response to this light sequence, and the overall answer was that your battery was having a very tough time retaining a charge. If you disconnected the negative clamp and then the battery went through the charging process I would imagine that your car has a decent drain going on.

Had AAA come out and replace a 5 year old battery in a Lexus that hadn't been driven much. The car was only driven about twice a month after that and one morning the battery was dead, as in no interior lights, no blinking security light on the radio. From what I hear, "not driven enough" won't get a warranty replacement. Bought the Genius 5 on Amazon, hooked it up, normal charge, not repair, and 24 hours later the car started right up. It's been fine since. Maybe the battery had been sitting on a shelf for some time.

In most cases yes, that is the way they are set. If you have access to a voltage meter you can double check that your AUX battery is getting charged as well. In some setups there is a essentially a kill switch that when the vehicle is turned off then the AUX battery is disconnected from the starting. Its not something we see a lot, but I have seen it.

I have this charger and for the first few months (arbitrary, was taking detailed notes) it worked fine. This included switching out of "maintenance mode" and recharging the battery when loads were placed on them. My shunt would record essentially 0 amps when in standby and when I applied a load I could see the - amps for a while and eventually I would see + amps (varied based on load but the math was always "load - 5amps" as expected) as the charger sensed and began to replenish the battery. If I were plugged in and using loads my battery was basically always at 100% per my shunt indicator. And then I noticed when checking the battery monitor that it was at 90%, or lower depending on how long since I checked. Long story short, the charger would not come out of "maintenance mode". Unplugging and replugging would initiate a complete charge cycle back to 100% at ~5amps. But then the same failure to come out of "maintenance mode" would result. This is on a LiFePO4 100ah battery. I now have a heater assembly on the battery that draws DC power from the system as needed to maintain greater than 40F. The battery BMS has a cold temp cutoff circuit which was activating a few overnights before I had a chance to install the heating system. I see nothing in the Noco manual about this interfering with the charger sensing circuitry. Do you have any insight on this phenomenon? I've spoken with tech support and made no progress beyond offering to take my unit back to se if they can duplicate. In the meantime I've purchased a different charger but have not installed it yet. I'd rather not use that style charger as it is more of a hobby/workbench charger and not "designed" as a 12vdc battery system charger. I have high regard for the Noco brand but I cannot figure out why this is happening, beyond a glitch in the microprocessor and/or sensing programming.

3 years later, but the NOCO website suggests "all lithium batteries with a BMS (Battery Management System)". I think that would be most Lithium batteries these days, I'm not fully across it but as far as I know a BMS prevents over/under charging and balances the cells. I'd kind of guess the NOCO just gives the Lithium battery as much as the BMS allows it to take, which is why it has it's own mode, while normal batteries it needs to be smarter about how it applies the charge for the given battery tech.

I ran your question past the techs at NOCO, here is the response: Both the battery and the charger may get warm while charging, but neither should get so hot that you could not comfortably lay a hand on them. Based on your customer's description, it sounds like the charger is getting too hot. Possible reasons for the charger and battery getting hotter than they should include if there is a large draw on the battery while it is charging, or if the battery is bad. The GENIUS5 has a 3 year warranty and we would be happy to inspect the customer's unit and replace if faulty through the warranty.

The wording on the comment was 26 foot AGM but I am assuming your running a pair 6 volt batteries in series to create one large 12v battery. If that's the case then using the 12V mode to charge the battery pack will work just fine. Positive to battery 'A' and negative to battery 'B' and your good to go. If you want to equalize the batteries then you can charge them one at a time on the 6V setting. I would recommend doing that once a year -

@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the charge level and the size of the battery. If the batteries you are using the charger on are already near fully charged then the charger will reflect that in its indicator lights. If the batteries are too small for the charger, lets say a 10AH power sport battery, then the charger will move the blinking green light fairly quickly and remain there for a time until it fully charges the battery.

Great review. Will this charger be sufficient to charge/maintain standard sedans such as Lexus and Honda? How is the GENIUS10 compared to this GENIUS5 (for example, what additional features on the 10 would warrant twice the cost on Amazon? And is it really needed?). I saw that your channel also reviewed the GENIUS10 review as well. Thank you.

The GENIUS5 will handle any car battery without an issue for both battery charging and maintenance. The only true difference between these chargers would be the charge rate - the GENIUS10 at 10 amps and the GENIUS5 at 5 amps.

I bought a NOCO GENIUS5, what I sort of ran into is that it seems a little finicky around set up. So basically what seemed to happen is I set it up, plugin, select the the setting for the battery. I see it is at 25%, I come back the next day(2nd time) and it is still at 25%, which seemed suspicious, so I unplugged it, re-set everything, plugged it all back in using the cigarette lighter entry point. Everything looked right to me 1st, 2nd time with correct indicators to charge battery correctly. Same thing next day, I come back and still at 25%, so I repeat the setup again (3rd time), shoved it all back together, re-set to the normal battery setting. Frustration up two notches, I walk away. Now on day 3 the battery is solid GREEN and all charged back to normal fully charged. My gut feeling was somewhere in the works with the cigarette lighter plugin maybe not fully seated electronically. So it feels like 1) you better check on it after setup, 2) make sure everything is seated and connected good and tight 3) repeat if anything seems suspicious. I would not call this set it and forget it, keep an eye on things don't assume it can sense correctly what all is going on or pulse its way to success if connection is not solid. I doubt I would have had this had I connected directly to the battery terminals but I didn't want to go that route in a Porsche 997 where the battery is in the frunk and I would have had to leave the hood cracked open for the cable or come up from underside of the car snaked into frunk somehow which seemed like more pain than it was worth doing when the cigarette port is easily accessible. Any thoughts or comments appreciated. Is there a different approach to insuring a solid lock down on the 1st try.
@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc 2 жыл бұрын
Normally if the connection was not solid the charger would let you know - it will either error out or not engage the charging cycle at all. Have you tried the charger with the cig adapter on your everyday driver to see if there is an actual issue with the cig adapter itself?

@@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc no I didn’t try it in my daily driver, but that was definitely on my list of trouble shooting ideas as a next step, once I got the green light it saved me in a sense from that next trial step. It seems like even a small fraction of diameter difference could lead to a poor connection even though I am sure there is a known standard diameter but maybe in Europe their diameter is in metric and maybe the plug side was based on SAE diameter and it would mean carrying the match up out to at least 3 decimal places to get a snug fit. I am not sure exactly but you definitely need a good strong contact. I could clean the surface with some steel wool or maybe a thin piece of copper sleeve or small square to insure a snug fit first and every time

You can start the vehicle with the charger hardwired without an issue as long as the charger is disconnected from AC power. Keep in mind that the NOCO GENIUS series needs access to AC power in order to charger your car battery, so in a majority of airport parking garages I've been in there was no access to power. That being said you can hardwire this unit without an issue. NOCO also makes the GENIUS2D which is a smaller 2A charger but its completely sealed and will be unaffected by water and grime from the road.

Great review! Is it OK to repeat the Recovery process several times in a row?
@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc

I don't think NOCO has any written guidance on this but we normally call it after two attempts at the recovery process. If we are not able to bring a battery back after two full cycles of the recovery mode then its to far gone.

@@HighTechBatterySolutionsInc Thank you for the reply! I actually went ahead and ran three Recovery cycles one after another with my Genuis5 yesterday. And then I ran it in the maintanance mode for 12 hours. That got my battery SOH percentage go up from 82% to 99%. With my other charger's recovery,, Chinese Konnwei KW510, I was not able to go above 82% SOH.

What about motorcycle sealed maintenance free battery?

This charger and safely charge these types of batteries - if they are sealed maintenance free then they most likely fall into the AGM category.

I need a charger to keep in my car in case my battery dies when i'm at work. What do you recommend?

Are you looking for a jump starter or a charger? All of the NOCO GENIUS series chargers require a wall outlet to charger your battery, so if your in the middle of parking lot its not going to do you much good. If your looking for a portable jump starter with a self contained battery (no AC required) then I recommend taking a look at either the NOCO GB40 or GB50 series jump starter.
