In this video, we rebuild, paint and assemble the original door hinges off our 81 Camaro project "FastTimes". Although there are some slight differences between the early second gen hinges and the later ones, this video should help with rebuilding all 70-81 Camaro door hinges. Be sure to watch Part 1 first: bit.ly/2IBD4Xr

I've been curious if I found newer compatible latch and striker setup if it would help take the action from a thud to just a click.

Hey my friend. Great video. Great work. I like your attention to detail! Keep up the good work. One thing I have found when rebuilding GM door hinges is to buy USA Made bushings. The Dorman/Help China bushings DO NOT Last. I finally found some US made bushings online and they have been great. Wish I could remember where I found them but I am sure a quick Google search will do the job. Thanks again for great video and great work! Jeff

Thanks Jeff, yes some threads at the nasty Z site said to use GM bushings from the dealer. We will see how these do. I'm still thinking about going with the RB hinges. Overall I'm happy with these so far. The door on this car has never opened and closed like it does now since I have owned the car. Hopefully these last awhile.

The hinges look great! Taking the hinges apart and then ordering the rebuild kit is very good advice, there's some hinges that you can't even get the pin out.
@DoubleRRestorations
@DoubleRRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bart. Very true. I would say getting the detent roller pin out on the top hinge is the hardest part of this rebuild. I've got an extra set that I have been working on and I think I'm going to break out my set of torches for it. I would like to have one extra set that I just used for pulling the pins. This will be used when I'm setting final gaps.

Good work! Those hinges make the ones on my Porsche look like barn door hinges. I probably would have put a tiny TIG weld bead on the worn area and reamed it. But that's only because I don't like waiting for stuff to dry. Your solution will work very well!

Thanks Tom, yes I definitely want to learn to tig weld. That would have also been a great fix for these hinges. Hopefully I can get a tig welder soon. I just upgraded my mig welder last year.

these videos have helped me understand my Camaro a lot, my drivers door is in really good condition but my passenger door drops damn near a foot when I open it, I'm not to worried though because I can rebuild the hinge by spot welding it and drilling new hole's, buts just in case is there a good place that you know of that I can get new hinges or hell even just new parts for the car? How did you remove the original detent
@DoubleRRestorations
@DoubleRRestorations 16 күн бұрын
The info your needing is in part 1, starts around 12:17 in that vid. Basically I ground the bottom of it to remove the roller and then used alot of heat, while putting what was left of the detent in the vice and using a punch on the hinge to drive the hinge part away from the remaining detent.
