How are you guys doing YOUR power control? WiFi (cloud-connected/Tasmota/Sonoff LAN/Local Tuya, etc.)? Zigbee? Z-Wave? Would love to hear about your setup and the hardware you're using.

I found zigbee is the most reliable considering the cost and such. Z wave is cool to have the extra long range. But the price is up there and installing to physically locations takes some efforts. I had some tp link WiFi plugs before. But they occasionally have server connections issues. Eventually one day all of them decided to disconnect and reconnect every few minutes or so. That’s when I swapped out all of my WiFi plugs to zigbee plugs. Seamlessly integrated to Home assistant fully localized. No more headaches since then.

None of those. I use the ESP NOW wifi protocol, works great for battery powered sensor modules. ESP's mesh really well together and the API's make it simple to employ. You can use the cloud if need but it's not essential for locally communicating with say a controller module, which is awesome. Only requisite is coding skill (C++/Python).

I've used Sonoff S31s but found them to be unreliable, so I built my own wifi outlet. The issue was that I had a Node Red automation in Home Assistant turning the S31 on/off to fertigate my plants 3-4x/day, and on a recurring basis -- usually 1-4x/week, both the fertigation pump S31 and a reservoir mixing pump would lose connection from the "eWeLink Smart Home" HA add-on such that HA could not turn the pump off. After mixing a dozen gallons of fresh nutrient solution twice in two days (and hours trying to find a solution online), I gave up and built my own wifi outlet using a home electrical parts from Home Depot, an esp32, a 5v 4-channel relay, and a mini 120v AC to 5v DC usb power supply. I took a "Three-Gang New Work Outlet Box", cut a small hole in it, and glued a power inlet into the side so that I could run 120V AC power into the box using a standard desktop computer power cord. I wedged the mini usb power supply into the bottom of the box, connected it to the 120V AC power coming in, and used it to power the esp32 and 4-channel relay w/ 5v DC. I then put the 4-channel relay on the little shelf in the box (it fit perfectly!) and connected the relay to 120v AC for the outlets. I ended up with 3 pairs of 2 outlets that are controlled independently and, so far at least, work 100% reliably. In retrospect, it probably would have been quicker and easier to figure out how to flash the S31s with Tasmota so I wouldn't have to deal with the eWelink HA add-on, as I think that is what was causing the issue, but I had a lot of fun building it and it works great.

Sonoff plugs can be flashed with Tasmota. I don't think they have the power strips though. Another point of failure is if Tuya's cloud service is down, which is why having a local system is great

Tasmota. Never had a problem in 6 months of running. Works via mqtt no internet required and maintains time internally so will execute timers regardless of network and HA status. Still trying to figure how to set timers from HA input number, the JSON ends up invalid. I would like to run more of the automation on the esp32s and power strips as it would be ideal to have the system work independent of HA if something fails.

Why not use a relay board connected to four or more power outlets mounted on a wooden board? These can be locally controlled, for instance via ethernet cable. Although I do understand the 'less hassle' option of tuya power strips.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын
I buried a relay board in a power strip in my last build and it worked well - I think it's an option for those who are quite comfortable with their electricity skills and knowledge but I'm sort of leery about having a DIY solution for AC power.

The problem I have with Tuya now is that they killed flashing for Tasmota/ESPhome on newer devices along with their new official integration. It's basically reduced the sources of decent off the shelf wifi smart devices from 1 to 0, everything I do is DIY now.

unfortunately even the "local" hack version isn't acceptable "Using this integration does not stop your devices from sending status to the Tuya cloud, so this should not be seen as a security measure" - their github page.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting since they also talk about blocking the devices from internet access and it seems like it'd still work: "...If you plan to integrate these devices on a network that has internet and blocking their internet access, you must also block DNS requests (to the local DNS server, e.g. 192.168.1.1). If you only block outbound internet, then the device will sit in a zombie state; it will refuse / not respond to any connections with the localkey. Therefore, you must first connect the devices with an active internet connection, grab each device localkey, and implement the block." It must mean that if you do not take the extra step of blocking their internet access, they will still phone home despite using local tuya.
@readypetequalmers7360

@@LEDGardener oh you know it sounds like to get them set up initially they have to contact their home server for that "localkey" then you can block it.

@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын
@@womplestilskin From what I understand, if you update the firmware, you lose that ability. Could be wrong. The integration does not suggest that it relies on the cloud so maybe I am mistaken and it's just the UK. For some reason I remember trying to add a new plug to my Kasa app and not being able to set up local control only. Maybe my mistake was trying to manage it in the app first.
