The theme song for me is one of the best for quietly playing in the background during scenes. I love how they give it different styles, slowing it down for romantic scenes and having the sped up version during action scenes.

Marc "I didn't know there was a pool down there" Lawrence plays one of my favorite Bond villains. He appeared in the previous film, Diamonds Are Forever, as "Slumber Inc. Attendant" and this one as "Rodney". I wish they had kept the actor and character as an ongoing assassin that appears in and survives every film.

Marc Lawrence also appears as big gangster in holodeck story from "Star Trek: DS9" "Badda-bing, badda-bang". In the same show Dr. Bashir plays James Bond-inspired secret agent ("Our Man Bashir"). And author of these holodeck stories is name Felix (probably nod to Felix Leiter).

My second favorite Bond film, after Goldfinger. The action was great right from the start. The cast was amazing, in that each actor meshed well with the others. The music was great, and Moore's wit and humor was never better. Great ending, as well.

this is actually one of my favorite Moore Bond films, mostly because of Christopher Lee. the scene with Bond wearing the mannequin clothes doesn't bug me, he obviously just threw on the suit coat and tie since he already had the same shirt and pants, what bothers me is that the mannequin had a real Walther PPK that was loaded with ammo
@sammanalili9811
@sammanalili9811 4 жыл бұрын
Scaramanga maybe too meticulous and detailed with his Draculaish setting that he painstakingly designed a mannequin of his next victim plus a real weapon of his choice! and that might explains why the mannequin had a real Bond gun with real ammo!
@Kosthoms
@Kosthoms 4 жыл бұрын
The only problem with this scene is that Scaramanga remains in that mannequin room since the begining of the duel, and we see Bond coming across the mannequin later in a very different place and floor, and then Bond goes climbing and loses his gun down (where Scaramanga is), and suddenly Bond disguised as the mannequin is back in the room where the mannequin was supposed to be, along with Scaramanga 😂
@johnjamele
@johnjamele 4 жыл бұрын
the mannequin didn;t have a real gun. Bond retrieved his gun from the floor and then took the place of the mannequin.

This was always one my least favorites but I recently found an appreciation for it. I just can't get past the sheriff. Was he that beloved in Live and Let Die that they felt the audience wanted him back? I liked the end, the face off between two professionals. But I never liked how Bond drops his gun into what looks like a dark abyss only to have it again in the next scene. I always skipped the song on my Bond CD but it is appropriate and in the same vein as Bassey's. I never liked the opening but back then it wasn't expected to always have Bond in the opening or an elaborate action scene and this one sets up Scaramanga nicely as a main character in the film. But that slide whistle. That was the moment that led to even more cartoon like moments to come.
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 7 жыл бұрын
Bond's stunts should have no background music. Only the actual sound effects of what's happening in the scene. The car bridge jump would be most fantastic without any additional "musical" themes or effects. Just the sound of the car metal crackling and hitting the other side of the bridge would have been most adequate to the scene.

I just hate that the producers resort back to square screen format and not shot LALD and TMWTGG in Panavision (wide-screen) just as the producers started to have a Panavision (wide-screen) in Thunderball down to DAF... I hypothesized that the producers economized or may be they do it as what Sean had in DN, FRWL and Goldfinger all shot in standard square format.. luckily ,just as I had expected ,TSWLM was shot in Panavision down to View to a kill. and speaking of VTAK ..when the end credits if SWLM showed a "James Bond will return on From A View To A Kill" it has the words From... but when that film was released it had only the title without FROM. ...and also From a view to a kill was not immediately made after SWLM because it was followed by Moonraker,FYEO, and Octupussy

The 'feel' of this film isn't right. Either go with a lower key Moore Vs Lee story. or do a globe-trotting mcguffin search story, but don't combine the two, because they undermine each other. Moore was never comfortable with the cold blooded Bond stuff (he had to be convinced by Hamilton to slap Maude Adams around), although I do think that again Moore looks in great shape and does his best with what he's given. I don't mind the title song. It's in the Goldfinger tradition (even the lyrics). It does suffer from being rushed from pre-production to release date and it's not in any way inspired. Thanks again for the time, thought and work involved in this review.

Even when Moore played in The Saint, he was not good at portraying a cold blooded killer. Yet his Saint character was more serious and as much as I like Moore as Bond, I would have loved him to play the role more similarily to the way he played The Saint, which was undeniably brilliant.

John Barry despised this score. Because he thought it had too much frivolity in the music. And wasn't serious enough. Which I tend to agree with. Although "In Search of Scaramanga's Fun House" is classic Barry polyrhymatic GOLD! They scorned Alice cooper's rendition too which put John in an awkward position. And Lulu hated it from the get go which didn't help matters. It dented John Barry's confident though, & he didn't do Bond for another 5 years, but returned with a BANG for Moonraker! Great review mate. I really like the detail & clips you put in. I like to be shown the clips you are talking about, which you do really well. Thanks :) And I love your accent you sexy thing! lol

When watching my own videos i'm always somewhat bothered by my accent personally, I think it's one of the things going against me, compared to the other Bond reviewers out there. I first saw the Astro Spiral Jump without the slide whistle . I was so pleased with the stunt , that when The Man With The Golden Gun came on T.V. I fast forward the film to get to the stunt . However , when the slide whistle was played . I almost fell from my feet.

Yep, it's supposed to be liquid helium or something similar. Good luck with maintaining absolute zero as well, its thought to be fundamentally impossible. Just one of the many obvious and lazy mistakes is this embarrassing addition to the series. Only good thing about this film is Lee and the exotic locations.

Another great review. I admire someone who shares the same passion as me for the Bond franchise. You cover all of the relevant points as well. I still can't understand why the slide whistle is still in this movie. They've had opportunities with various Blu Ray releases to remove it. I guess they want to keep everything original.
@DutchBondFan
@DutchBondFan 8 жыл бұрын
Good to hear you like it! Yeah the main reason is never got changed is because they want to keep everything original. I'm all for that too, although changing that would be an exceptation that I wouldn't mind.

+DutchBondFan They did change some of the digital grading in a few films though. For Your Eyes Only was fixed during the scene in which Bond runs after Locke in the car. Ending with him pushing the car off the cliff. It was daylight very quickly in the original cut. In recent years though they made the transition to daylight much more gradual.

I see, I did know about the quick change to daylight, but never knew they fixed it in FYEO, it may be something to remember and point out for Recapping Episode #12!

Christopher Lee makes this movie worth watching. Also, I really like Nik-Nak's relationship with Scaramanga. The whole thing is like Scaramanga has offered to let Nik-Nak have everything on the island if anybody kills Scaramanaga, so Nik-Nak's encouraged to make it as hard as possible for Scaramanaga. And yet they also develop a kind of weird friendship, too. It absolutely fascinates me.

The set used for M's office was used by lots of different production companys, a good example is in the Medusa Touch 1978, you can clearly see it as Dr Zonfeld's office.

I've never understood why people consider it a weak Bond film. You have freaking Christopher Lee as the main villain, Britt Ekland as your bond girl, tons of exotic locations, excellent martial arts action, excellent car chases and stunts as well as a flying AMC matador. Even a little bit of comic relief with the karate school scene or even the vacationing Sheriff who reappears from Live and Let Die. It's a great Bond film and one where Roger Moore really came into his own.

You can make an argument that the Bond girls in this film were the best of all time: Maud Adams and Britt Ekland were both completely stunning, but the minor female characters were sizzling hot too. (That girl skinny dipping in the pool? Wow!!) In these 'woke' times it just wouldn't be allowed to film stuff like this. Back in the 1970s people seemed to accept that men were men and women were women - sexual energy between them was celebrated rather than denied. Now it's probably only a matter of time before we get a Bond 'girl' who has a beard and balls but who identifies as a 19-year old beauty queen...

I like this song a lot. Not in my top 10 or anything. But its fun and catchy. And i always love a villain song. There's Goldfinger and The World Is Not Enough. The other two villain songs in the franchise. And i dig both of them. Towards the end of the movie the song plays again and for a bit its about James Bond. I really wish there was a full James Bond song with lyrics, indicating Bond being the final winner from this clash of titans. Due to that part alone this movie has one of my favorite endings in any Bond movie. Edit: Oh you mentioned it too. That musical beat is great.

I think looking back at that part, that was another attempt to try and get a joke out of the fact that 'who will he bang' is in the lyrics, and by the time I was doing the early episodes, me talking about 'banging' was almost like a signature thing. (toned that down much more in recent episodes) Some jokes defenitely work better than others though :P
