Recoleta Cemetery: Argentina's 'City of the Dead'

CNN and the BBC hailed Recoleta Cemetery as one of the best cemeteries in the world. It's a fascinating miniature city with extraordinary funerary monuments. This video tells the story of the cemetery and its interesting occupants and shows some of the magnificent tombs to be seen in this most visited tourist location in Argentina.
Recoleta Cemetery is crowded with wonderful art and architecture, along a network of pathways and I did not find it easy to locate the best monuments and the most interesting occupants. Fortunately, I discovered Robert Wright’s excellent Recoleta Cemetery guide on his website AfterLife - recoletacemetery.com/?page_id... . This the best source of information and I strongly recommend it to anyone planning to visit the cemetery.

I live in the US but my family is from Argentina. I visit often, but ALWAYS go to Recoleta Cemetery. There is an immutable sensation of grandness, the sacred, and peace that I find so appealing. thanks for posting!

I'm from Argentina and lived for ten years in Buenos Aires. I visited the cemetery many times and know it quite well so I can tell you the video is such a good job!

@@DrDavidOwens oke mr David, I never went to Argentina and this video reportage of you was excellent to watch to see all those rich and expensive graves of important persons from Argentina, who are burried here.... i am focus on Argentina because of the CELAC meeting which is held now in Buenos aires of all countries of South america and the Caricom countries where our Foreign affaires minister Ramdien of Suriname, attend this meeting and was passing allong this Cemetary in Buenos aires... Nice video for sure. watching this from Paramaribo in Suriname

Nice Mario Guttierrez from Argentina, nice meeting you. Like to hear about this la coleta cemetary here in buenos aires, never heard about it untill I saw this video from David Owens. Your country was in the news last in Paramaribo capital de Suriname, because Argentina closed his embassy here in Paramaribo. Argentina minister Santiago Andres Cafiero says that he want to reopen that Argentina embassy soon again because of the good ties between Argentina and Suriname

Oh oh oh my god it's very nice cemetery, I enjoy visiting cemeteries when I travel to different places, before I travel I search of the cemetery around which I can visit, hope I can visit this cemetery and see the great architecture and great status. I can spend long hours visiting this cemetery.

yes, it's a wonderful memorial location. I head back to Recoleta soon and plan to make some improvements to the video. Buenos Aires has a second large cemetery and I will explore its architectural and artistic delights.

This video of your visit to the Recoleta cemetary in Argentinas capital Buenos aires was very interested. i have seen many video of mauseleums in the USA, but those I have seen here in this video was amazing. Very expensive graves and only the rich people from Argentina could be burried here.... Very nice reportage you did here....watching this video from Paramaribo Suriname

Extremely well done video documentary. Amazing place of 14 acres! Wow! I am curator for my church cemetery & the amount of work for that little 1/2 city block is over whelming at times. This place is a real hand full for whomever has the task of keeping this cemetery in shape!

Cemetery art / sculpture / architecture are amazing ! When traveling I always check out the local cemeteries. One request if possible would be to provide sub titles. Sending this video to my mom who is hearing impaired and uses sub titles for TV and internet.

The thing is, if there's no one left to pay for maintenance, the pantheon is pretty much abandoned and left to decay. You can actually enter many of such abandoned pantheons (although it is forbidden) and find all of the caskets vandalized in the crypt below.

Some of these underground mausoleums are insanely big. Crazy to think that in many of them, several generations of a family rest together.

If you're planning on visiting Buenos Aires you should also visit the Chacarita Cementery. Recoleta it's a cementery for rich and notable people, Chacarita cementery on the other hand it's a burrial site for all classes, poor and rich alike and it's also full of history. The place was opened it the XIX century during a tragic epidemy of yellow fever. But beware, the place is HUGE and it's verte easy yo get lost, so go with a local who knows the place well. And it's also creepy as fck, big parts of the cementery are abandoned so it's not uncommon to find old human bones, open graves, and remains of wierd rituals.

If you die and go to the La Recoleta Cemetery, your family will have to pay from $ 15,000 to $ 100,000. The value depends on the location, the neighboring bodies (celebrities or not) among other things.

No sé a qué bloque de viviendas te referís porque ese barrio es el más rico de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. A pocas cuadras del cementerio está la Avda Alvear que está rodeada de Palacios de estilo francés que ha convertido al barrio de Recoleta en uno de los más exclusivos y lujosos del mundo.

What a beautiful and most informative tour of La Recoleta. Be sure to also check out the video by Vic Stefanu .. he's captured the inside of many of Recoleta's mausoleums beautifully and tastefully, and even the accompanying music he chose is perfect. I'm fascinated by La Recoleta and these two videos have me saving madly to go and visit this amazing City of the Dead.

Hi, very interesting video, I'm from Buenos Aires but don't like visiting cemeteries; went to this one thirty years ago when I was studying architecture and they send us to take some pictures and also visited Chacarita cemetery when I was in primary school, 40 years ago and again last year when a relative passed and that's it. I remember though, that they weren't as abbandoned as they are today. I learned that cemeteries employees are in a sort of grey area; no one knows how they get the job, they charge relatives for taking care of vaults or graves but don't have a official regular income but there are some, employed by the city, that take care of some parts of the cemetery, very confusing. These monuments were made in a very different time, when families wanted to show how rich and powerful they were; most of them still are but don't need nor want to show it.

I have seen this place in my dream and surprise thing is I haven't heard & saw this place before. I wasn't sure about it but after searching curiously I found it. One more surprise was name "Rufina". She appeared in my dream. I don't why all this happen but I believe there might have some kind of strange connection. If anyone knows the reason then please let me know.

But think of the artists and workmen employed to build the tombs, the caretakers and restorers who are /were all paid and earn/Ed their livings by this. That’s why I don’t begrudge the rich their vanity or sentiment because people earn their living doing something artistic and productive instead of being objects of charity.
