Wow what an incredible cemetery! I've never seen one as grand or extravagant as that before - it really is like a city for the dead! 11 full-sized coffins buried above ground in one structure? And that was just a medium-sized one in the graveyard? Amazing.

Interesting visit in Argentina! I have never heard of a cemetery tour before, that sounds so unique and fascinating. Hope it wasn't the coffins punching out themselves, that just sounds scary lol Aww cute, I always have a tendency to apologize to people when I can't say certain words in English as well, I get how it feels like :)

There are some above ground mausoleum cementaries in New Orleans as well, but these in Buenos Aires are definitely more intricate. Beautiful monuments. Glad you finally found Evita's grave and had it all to yourselves for a minute.

Wow the story of the 19 year old girl is like my worst fear in the world :( We have above ground cemeteries like this at home too - especially in Galveston TX So awesome you got to see Eva's monument 💜

It’s truly harrowing isn’t it 😱 can only imagine how many more tales there must be from this place, if only we could read Spanish or had a guide 😅 Wow, we’ve been to Galveston (lovely beach☺️) had no idea above ground cemeteries were ever a thing!

There is a cemetery in the Chacarita neighborhood that is divided into 3, one for Argentines, and then next to it is the British cemetery and further on the German cemetery.

Very interesting to see & hear about this famous cemetery. Glad you managed to find Evita’s tomb - gave you & us all a good look around! Quite creepy in places, I’m sure. Esp as we’re not used to bodies above ground! The money put into these monuments is incredible! Sad you always get vandals at these places. Great to see the new side of Recolletta too & a totally opposite vibe! Very lively! Thanks.

The money spent on these things is crazy! Fancier than the buildings that most people live in. We could’ve wandered around for longer if it wasn’t so hot as there was still more to be seen, it’s huge!

I think that would be such an interesting place to explore - but I'm with you Kirsty, I think it would be freaky after 6pm... definitely wouldn't want to go in the dark. I would probably also get turned around and lose my husband in there. Some of the grave monuments are so intricate! Your lunch looked perfect for after all that walking. I also wish I spoke better Spanish.

It was like a mini walled city of incredible architecture from around the world! My friends always laugh at how detailed my memory is, comes in handy for times when you can’t read the language and have no wifi😂 The locals seem so sweet, we always feel bad for visiting countries and not knowing much of their language but we never expect them to apologise for their level of English.

There is other Cementery in the city building out the limits in the s.XIX. Beacuase for Fiebre Amarilla (Yellow Fever), in this time almost the 40% people of Bs.As died for this Pandemia. Have a Lot of Mausoleums

Those squared spaces on the wall are called niches (nichos) and are cheaper than mausoleums (we call them vaults) and more expensive than a ground burial. So in an ordinary cemetery you would have the cheapest places (ground); then niches and then family vaults.
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers 2 жыл бұрын
Can see how they'd be cheaper than mausoleums, it was interesting to see but wow they are huge and intimidating up close.
