Such a great father I can see why Melissa is the person she is he built such a strong foundation. He is so right on guidance "Those who spare the rod hate their children, but those who love them are diligent to discipline them." the rod is speaking of a Sheppard and how they use their staffs to guide the sheep so they go in the right direction, guidance love and protection is a parent job.

I was one of those 20 someone's who dug in hard on my life. I lost 8 friends in my high school years to accidents, drug overdoses, suicide, and carbon monoxide poisoning and those events made me take life very seriously. I started working part-time in my family business at age 13. I finished high school and started college at age 17 graduating with an associate degree at 18. I worked various jobs until age 22 when i joined the company where I would develop my 40+ year career. I think i understood young that my purpose in life was in all things to give God credit. Life really does go by quickly.

Your father is a wise gentleman. My father brutally crushed his kid's spirits; just as his father did to him. When I came to Jehovah God at the age of 24, my spirit was renewed and reinvigorated. Jehovah God is the great refresher and healer. Your dad raised his kids as I raised my daughter. My daughter is early 40's now, is joyous, a Spirit-filled child of Jehovah God, happily married, mother of two children and a very successful lawyer. She greatly enjoys her life and gets joy out of many things. Her children are wonderfully joyous. Jehovah God wants His children to enjoy their time on the earth that He created for us. Life is so precious and enjoyable when we follow Jehovah God's commandments. as best we can. - One of the King's kids

Same here, I found my heavenly Father, Jehovah God in my 20's. Still took decades to really learn to love myself. My parents were not evil, just damaged, the congregation convinced me at age 58 that I am not "less than" others.

You mentioned wanting your dtr. to be happy yet wanting her to use here God given talents. We witnessed our child struggle with what they thought was our expectations of their future. Depression took them over without us realizing it! Years into college, they let us know that they did not feel they could meet our expectations. It was heart wrenching to us that they felt they would be disappointing us if they followed their hearts instead of what they thought we expected. It was a tearful evening for all of us, and a relief for them!

He has such a soothing voice and seems so knowledgeable on many topics, has great advice and seems such a sweetheart. I can see why you had such a great childhood and are a great parent. You have a wise father. In many ways, he sounds like my husband and I. We always told our two children why we said "NO",this would drive my family crazy. But we thought we needed to show our children that "NO" wasn't because we just wanted to say NO but that there were reasons, whether it was a safety issue or wasn't age appropriate. We allowed them to have a voice, share their feelings, or ask questions. Our daughter was an old soul. At the age of five, she could have an adult conversation that left the adults shaking their heads. My hubby is always telling our grandkids about their high school friends won't always be their friends. It's just a season in life. Very refreshing to see you two chat!

Took two days for me to listen, because life (I homeschool too), but I kept this open because I knew it would be a good one. Your dad reminds me so much of a college professor that I had. The end was probably my favorite part and brought on so many emotions. Things are incredibly tough right now and there are so many people who just don't want to listen. They don't want to look, they don't want to listen, they just want to hold on to what they think is truth, when sadly, it's not. Keep doing what you're doing and thanks to your Dad for his wise words. I needed that today.

The concept of encouraging a child to be happy, is so important. I remember my child questioning why I never stressed at report card time like many in his class. I said, "It is important to make good grades, but it is more important to me, that you are good people." I cherish the fact that this was our focus. My children are happy adults today AND they are good people in their community!

Something I've heard, which kinda had quite an impact on me, is that once they hit 18/19, it becomes a spectator sport! I've found that to be pretty true, and if you've raised them with the right morals and values, you can pretty much let them fly! Doesn't mean you won't feel like your heart isn't walking around outside of your body for the rest of your life!

My father had nothing but hate for me, he hit me, he disciplined me, he threw me into a bedpost, I fractured a rip and I cried in pain many nights alone, he was French and because I was not able to say „je“ in a propper Parisian way, he threw books at my head! He threw me down the stairs if I could not stand straight. He was a monster, but a well known Chemist. He had two faces, but everybody believed he was just fabulous and so clever! So who would have believed me ever! My childhood was a nightmare! A conversation like yours with your dad would have been unimaginable to me. You are so very lucky!!

OMG 😊I'm only a couple minutes into this and happy at what I'm hearing. You reminded me of an Incredibly good childhood memory. We spent a very large amount of time on KY Lake, Sled Creek to be exact, where friends lived on the lake. Every now and then just after dark, Mitch the man with the boat would load us kids into the boat to go "Steel the Watermelon" which actually meant, taking the boat around the bay and sneak on to other people's dock to jump off their diving boards and slide down their slides, than onto the next dock. So much fun, Such a Great memory. Thanks for that and the talk with you sweet dad.

I agree with your father, I really disliked hearing, “because I said so”. I made the decision to never say that to my children because it’s not a valid answer as to why you shouldn’t or weren’t allowed to do the things that your friends were doing. I always told my girls, it’s because as your mother I care what you do and want to keep you safe so when you are older and can make those decisions on your own, go for it,, but not while you’re in my care.

I absolutely loved this podcast. This the first time seeing your dad! I am so blessed to still have mine as well. My sons (now 40 & 37) would always use the "so and so parents are letting them" and I would say "well so and so is not my child". your relationship with your dad is so much like mine and my dads. Thank you so much for sharing precious dad with us!!!

I love how you were brought up. You were actually parented. Just like how you are parenting your kids. Parenting seems to be archaic now. Parents are not at all involved with their kids, they would rather just give them iphones. They leave the teaching the kids to someone else.

You are incredibly blessed, to have a father, and parents like that. My upbringing was so different. My parents took no interest in me, talking to me, like your father, or helping with school work. There just was not the wonderful connection that you have. Your Father is a wonderful wise man. Congratulate him for me Please.

I met your Mom & Dad in Osoyoos. Your Dad started talking to me and very proud of your accomplishments on KZfaq. A very nice and comfortable man to talk to🙏as your Mom kept walking their dog.

What touched my ❤ the most was your gratitude toward your father. Mine is gone. So, tell your father's how grateful your are toward ALL THE KNOWLEDGE THEY GAVE.

So wonderful to see you and your father in great conversations. I lost both my parents in my 40s. My Dad was a hard working man of few words, raising 3 daughters before a son, but when he had something to say, it was usually some kind of life lesson. Mom was the nurturing kind, as mothers are, but worked hard in a factory after my brother was born. I truly wish I could have had more adult conversations with them. You are fortunate to still have your parents to talk to. Something they did instill in us was the importance of faith, family, hard work along with doing fun stuff, keeping that balance. I think as parents we have the role of being what you want your children to become, plus encouraging them to be more than us. The world is changing so fast, sometimes I think we need to pause and ask if it's really for the better, or are somethings better just the way they are.
