It could be argued that the first machine did a preclean and the degritter finished it off. I would love to see/hear a similarly dirty album that is run on the degritter only.

You’re right! The Clearaudio Matrix did the ‘heavy’ work which made the Degritter’s work far easier. A fairer comparison would be to clean the record on the Degritter without the pre-clean. As a Klaudio user, I continue to ‘wet clean’ and rinse all records, new and used, before cleaning them ultrasonically. The two methodologies work wonderfully well together and prevent the U.S. machine from getting ‘clogged up’ with contamination and detritus that the wet cleaning RCM can easily handle. As to the choice of disc, good luck finding a noise free copy of this one. We bought 2 copies from separate sources, in different countries, and both have ‘non fill’. RTI did a very poor job on this one for MFSL. I would love a decently pressed reissue or a Super Audio CD reissue. I don’t count on the recent standard reissue as it was pressed at MPO which has really fallen from grace as a pressing plant in the past seven or years. It used to be superb.

There is one problem here, you actually cleaned that record after one time cleaning with clearaudio, so it's double cleaned :D If we done it reverse with another record, maybe there is a different result.

Well, the baseline was after cleaning on the clear audio. It showed what the Degritter can do even to a supposedly “cleaned” record.

@@highendaudio I would agree with Ryan above. No doubt it can improve on an already cleaned record, but would it have got to the same endpoint as easily with the prior cleaning on the Clearaudio? Without the rigorous application of crossover study design we'll never really know 🤔🙄😂

I appreciate your video, but for a proper comparison, you should compare 2 different records with similar dirt, and without music. Even if you tried using ClearAudio again (2 times in a row), the result would be better. Or even if you used the Degritter first and then the ClearAudio later, the result would be better.

We actually did go back to the ClearAudio, cleaned it again, and no change. 🤔. The Degritter clearly did a better job.

Thanks for making this video! It really helping people like me decide if the degritter is worth it or not. Is there a chance you could do another where you record the audio directly from the preamp? It’s hard to judge the improvement when listening through your camera/cellphone microphone. Thanks!

I've got a Double Matrix Pro, the original one. Just ordered a Degritter. I'm looking forward to comparing them but I'll be disappointed if the ultrasonic isn't considerably better.

I just got a Degritter a few weeks ago and agree with your findings. I do have two things: 1. How much of the Degritter cleaner did you add to your distilled water? Also, did you add any alcohol to your water tank mix ? 2. Have you done a rinse cycle with just distilled water (and MAYBE a few drops of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol) in a second, separate water tank, running the same record in 1 or 2 more Quick Washes with that tank to rinse it? IT GETS MUCH BETTER !!

We added the amount specified in the instruction manual. We didn’t add anything extra. Haven’t tried just distilled water.

The Degritter manual FAQ states this about shellac and lacquer-acetate records: “We have not conclusively tested cleaning shellac or lacquer-acetate records with Degritter. If you do clean one, then do so on your own responsibility”. Which seems odd… it’s really built for 12” LPs, but they have inserts that allow cleaning of 7” and 10” records. Does anyone know if its safe with such records?

Hardly an apples-to-apples comparison! As others have mentioned, the Degritter is “standing on the shoulders” of the ClearAudio. I’d need to hear to similarly noisy records compared in order to draw a conclusion, including reversing the order of which device goes first. ALSO, shouldn’t we have heard the LP *before* the first cleaning? Without this step, your “comparison” is of little help.

There’s an aggregate effect here of cleaning a record using two technologies in sequence that invalidates any comparison between the machines

@@highendaudio No because you’re not subjecting the record to independent processes. If you grabbed two records of the same content that were equally dirty and play them before and after then yes, you can get to that conclusion. Until then, you can’t say the Degritter won, because your Degritter version was cleaned by the Clearaudio

@@250Pants how can you submit the same record to independent processes? Think about it. One record. Once it’s cleaned on one, it’s affected. We’ve tried purchasing two of the same record and cleaning both and still the Degritter won, but that’s not fair as the record cleaned on the Degritter could have been a better pressing to begin with.

@@highendaudio I wouldn't conduct one test but several and aggregate the results. They have to be independent tests, meaning that records get cleaned solely on the clearaudio or solely on the Degritter. Never on both

@@rickyfitts2260 we have done that, but the issue then becomes one pressing being cleaner than the other. In our experience, the new Degritter mk2 trumps them all. We’ve had the klaudio and audiodesk too.

That "comparsion" makes absolutely no sense at all. You would have gotten the same or better result if you just clean it twice with the ClearAudio.

Listening simply is not a valid test. If you really want to know which machine is doing a better job then clean a record on each machine and then examine the grooves under a microscope.
