RECORD COMPANIES. How they were, in the years 1965-1999, the star makers. They had the power to choose an act and make them huge. If you had the goods, and the label gave you the push, you could become a household name. Without the major record labels you didn’t have a chance. When the star making machine went away, so did any new stars.

As were albums by KISS, Whitesnake, Debbie Gibson, Paula Abdul, New Kids On The Block, Prince, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Poison, Cinderella, Motley Crue, Skid Row, MC Hammer towards the end of the decade etc.....what a great era of music, no matter what your genre/preference! And these are just off the top of my head.

Yeah, its sad, my daughter won't grow up with a huge band like GNR or Crue. I feel really lucky to have been 10 when I heard Appetite for Destruction on cassette tape... given to me by another subscriber of yours.... Robin Taylor. We grew up together in Wichita, Kansas. Dont know if he remembers that, lol.

Great video! Prince is another one who the world may have missed if Warner Brothers hadn’t put their weight behind him. The playing field is more even today, but the labels expect you to come as a complete package with an consumable image, a commercial sound, and a gazillion followers and high engagement across social media lol

Record companies used to get a lot of shit. Some of it earned obviously, but remember, they’re throwing darts at a board to see what hits, while spending a fortune on every dart they throw. Good or bad, they had a purpose!

I think the real death sentence to the record companies was the advent of places like myspace and soundcloud, which dropped about 2004 - 2005 from memory? I mean you could tell by the late 90s that the companies weren't taking big chances on bands anymore, but waiting till something got big in the underground and then swooped in and scooped them up with big deals, the writing was on the wall from whenafter grunge fizzled out.

It’s all hollow. No substance. No real substance. The new ones come and go. No staying lower because none of it is built on music. It’s all internet and social media hype. No songs. In 25 years no one will remember any of it because it lacks soul and heart. In 25 years you won’t remember any music from 2023 but you will still be hearing music from the golden years, 1955-1999. That music will live on until the planet explodes. Thank you for watching !

@@beforeiforget1985 somebody must believe in the value of Justin Bieber’s catalog because he just sold it for $200 million bucks. Genesis sold their non Peter Gabriel catalog and Phil Collins solo catalog for $300 million combined.

@@WhyTheHorseface genesis I understand and collins. Beibers catalog sold for that amount but it is really worthless. Plus he’s not a real musician per day. It’s the equivalent of millions of kids buying the latest fad , say a spinner or something. Meaning it’s disposable. I’m not knocking anyone’s chances at success. But unfortunately they are creating in a climate of soulless energy and the rush to fame is more important than the actual music they make.

Do you think it's still possible to get record label attention as a new rock band? Without connections and being loaded rich. If not, what do you think is the best way to break through in 2023?

I really don’t know. It’s all been done really. Music will never die as long as people keep making it but being in a band and trying to get somewhere? I believe that is over. Unfortunately. But if that’s what you want to do I say do it. If you are happy doing it. Do it. For the love of it. 🙏

How often have you heard some rock star sitting in their mansion? Bragging about all the drugs and decadence their band was into. How irresponsible they were. Tell the sad story of how their label ripped them off. They always leave out the part about the record company taking all the risk, putting up the money, taking chances, and all they did to make them rich and famous.

Most bands spent their money faster than it came in and were irresponsible. Without the labels they wouldn’t have gotten out of their hometown
