NY here! We have yearly letter of intent, plan of instruction, quarerly reports with attendance info, and testing (some years and kind of depends on school district). It isn't as intense as it first seems, but I get a little annoyed because it looks like a lot of oversight but there really isn't, so it kind of feels like busy work. I keep notes on the things he's done each month and include it in my quarterly report. (Like books we/he read, field trips, activities) That isnt required, but i find it helpful to be able to look back and see what we did since my mind is like a black hole. Haha.

After hearing so much feedback, I'm starting to think it's mostly oversight on paper🤔

In Missouri, we're required to track 1,000 hours, 600 of which have to be core hours (and 400 of those have to be at home). We also have to keep samples of work. But nothing ever has to be turned in anywhere. It's just a CYA in case someone calls us in for educational neglect. :)

I'm in a state that doesn't require record keeping. I do it anyway. I keep a note on my phone listing what we did that day & will often insert photos or videos of what we were doing. I keep examples of work. Tests, handwriting samples etc. Next year I plan to do a paper record. Having a medically complex child there are a lot of moving parts with the "care team" and I wanted to be prepared in case someone was ever concerned her education was being neglected.

It is so smart to proactively CYA!

I’m in Arizona where traditionally homeschooled kids have to file a letter of intent; however, our family is a part of a program called ESA, empowerment Scholarship Account, where we receive money each quarter to do school in any way that we see fit EXCEPT public or charters. We can homeschool, apply funds towards a private school, put the funds towards sports and curriculum and supplies, hire tutors, etc. In AZ neither party is required to document anything at all for proof of attendance or grades.

Girl, this video speaks to me this morning! I turn 40 next month! Also here in Texas, and my kiddo is a rising 7th grader....I'm not ready to have to keep records. 🤣

Because it's intimidating and hard. Also, we have the glorious luxury of not being forced to.

@MakingEverydayMagic I def feel some kind of way about the complete lack of oversight...but also my ADHD has appreciated not having to do that on top of finally forcing myself to use a planner instead of just winging my way through life.

I'm in NC where we file a letter of intent. We are supposed to have 9 months of instruction time, keep attendance, and have a yearly test. We are year-round homeschoolers, I mark what we do every day (attendance), and I enjoy the feedback from the yearly test. The Division of Non-public Education can request the attendance record and test at any time, but I've never heard of anyone having to do this.

I'm beginning to wonder if the oversight is just on paper and not actually in practice 🤔

Kentucky here! We're required to track attendance(1,062 hours/170 days) and issue report cards every 6-9 weeks(time frame has to match the local school district) and we're required to teach specific subjects(reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, math, Science, Civics, history) Everything is for your own insurance, there's no reporting necessary aside from sending in a yearly LOI.

The report cards seems a little bananas.

@@MakingEverydayMagic It's just silly. You don't have to send them in to the BOE, you just have to keep them on file if for some reason you get reported/investigated. But, because most homeschool families are teaching to mastery, report cards are easy and show A's all around🤣

California tells you that you have to keep an attendence record and to be somewhat prepared to show what your kid has been doing if you are audited. Most people just have a notebook sheet of paper with their kids name and check marks next to school dates or a word document with check marks. I always went a step further because I am neurotic and had a notebook that, while I was checking my kids work, I had the date and just wrote down what he did each day. Side note, no one that I am aware of in California has ever been audited unless they are being checked for something else.

What do you use for the Texas requirement of character ed/citizenship? And social studies for first grade
@MakingEverydayMagic

For citizenship I count our Geography/History studies. For social studies, Skill Sharpeners Geography workbooks and our History Studies. We've used History Quest, Texas History, and Big History Project.

What is the plan for this tracking after it’s all filled out? I’m in Texas also and don’t understand what we will be doing with it.

My plan is to keep it for myself and get into the habit so I can more easily build a transcript later.
