dust cover may also useful because when you accidentaly drop turntable, dust cover will protect turntable

I can hear the needle playing the song directly off the record, so I prefer cover on to muffle that out.

if a dust cover is too light it will chatter and vibrate with subwoofers and cause feedback, but their are manufacture's that make aftermarket cover that are heavier that work pretty good

I found that the dust cover helps when you have kids, to keep there hands off while its playing... especially when I converted an old record cabinet with new components .. the big lid up for access and dust cover down for lil hands

Leaving the cover down on my SL1200 mk2 adds a lot of ringing feedback at high volume levels due to vibrations hitting the acrylic lens surface from speakers that are not to far away from my TT. With the cover up or off, no issues with feedback (even very loud volume). On my Rega planar 1, no issues down up or off. - I think it actually depends on the turntable design of the cover/lid. It's not only a simple issue of dust, it can actually be a problem depending on the design of the turntable lid and the proximity to the speakers and sub.

Only concern I heard (recently) about dust covers on while playing is heat building up inside specifically on the stylus. Seems a bit farfetched to me though unless you're spinning records for hours with the cover down. To me with not only dust but a cat & kids around, its a no brainer ;-)

Very good, practical advice. . By the way, have you presented, and explained about accuracy in the two main speeds of turntables, both direct drive, and belt drive yet, Jarret? I like all of your video on turntables, and vinyl records; and these video are quickly comprehended.

I have an SL1200 which I bought new in the 80s. I have records older than this kid. [Come to think of it, maybe some socks that old too.] It's still original and in great condition as well. I have changed cartridges over the years. I used to have a 681EEE but Stanton quit making "audiophile" products some years ago. I currently have an Audio-Technica VM760. I still have the original TT dust cover and use it. There was much 'voodoo' about turntables and covers in the 70s & 80s. (Apparently it persists) Anyone remember those linear tracking turntables? Any 'ringing', feedback, other issues, etc. are more indicative of poor isolation between the turntable location/mounting and speaker placement and/or mismatch. Many times people add subwoofers and over-equalize the low frequencies. That sets up resonances at low frequencies. The quarter-wavelength of 20Hz to 40hz is between about 14 feet to 9 feet, common residential room dimensions.

I am mainly using my turntable for DJ’ing, so when i play records i always remove the dustcover from my turntable. Is a dustcover important to have on your turntable when i’m not spinning vinyl, like to keep dust off my turntable? (I use a technics sl1200)

I had a dual 1015F without a dust cover. I bought a dust cover for it. I got sick of cleaning it every time I used it. The Technics SL-5200 I have came with a dsut cover. In both instances, I leave the dust cover off when I in use as it is easier to flip a record, or change a record, without the cover given each side is only 15 to 20 minutes. When not in use though, both have their dust covers on and it just keeps them so much cleaner and ready for the next use

The opposite, the cover can resonate from the speakers into the tonearm and create a feedback loop

Thanks... My turntable also came without a cover...it's not high end (Project RPM 1 carbon) ... so what can I get to put on the turntable mat to keep it dust free in between use ?

I have the exact same setup (same speakers, subwoofer, and cartridge/stylus) and my subwoofer has been making a terrible noise at loud volume. Took off the dust cover and now it plays perfectly. No idea why

i have a dust cover, but mines hinged and usually leave it open when im playing my records because it sounds better if that makes sense. i do close it otherwise when not in use so no specs hit it lol had it for 6 years and not once had to clean it so must be doing something lol

I have Audio-Technica 120 2 years now and always play with the cover down, but a mate called recentely and said remove the cover as it traps static which can be audible. I have played some records with the cover on and off over the last few weeks but really can't give a yes or no result.. Think I could end up with a headwreck if I don't stop.

I saw a video where a person used a simple towel/cloth over their turntable to prevent dust. Other than that, maybe you could use a cardboard box and turn it upside down? Maybe that could work.

I decided to leave mine off because when u lift it, the dust cover will not stay in place. I have a Technics SL 3200 which is considered vintage. Well guess im gonna have to clean the surface more often lol

So what's the best way to use it while playing a record? Up, down or completely off? Also, I've seen some people put stickers on it as some kind of decoration and personal style. What do you guys think of this? Yay or nay? Cool or tacky?

I have a dust cover on my turntable. But I keep it open every time I play a record. And then I close it when Im not playing anything. The reason why I have it open while playing is because I have heard that its better sound if its open. No idea if its correct or not thou. So its probably not, because I can not hear a big difference when its open or closed.

Isn't all dust covers hinged? The only upside might be the turntable looks a bit better with it off.

I have an LP120 as well, I use the dust cover but because of lack of space(it sits in a modded Entertainment Center) it will not open all the way. I chose to take out the hinges and just remove it during listening. Is this advisable?

+Daniel Smith Sure if that works well for you then it's ok! Just be careful not to bump the counter weight when you take off the cover because that could throw off the tracking force. But other than that you should be ok!

Exactly. I have the AT-LP120XUSB. Dust cover up - feedback begins at medium volume. I take the dust cover off completely when playing records. The user manual actually says to remove it. Not open or lift it but remove it.

With some of my records, not all i would get a hum and or sloppy base sound. Removed cover and all this went away. I dont know why.

A suggestion: re-edit this series to include all 10 portions in one video and remove the explanations about the entire series from each, which takes up 1/2 or more of each videos running time. I was perusing vids to send to a friend that wanted to get started and am not going to send a playlist or instructions to watch these "10 or more videos". Each of these are around 2 or 3 minutes and only a fraction is actual content. Just a suggestion. Cheers.
