Journey to the Chateau

8 ай бұрын

In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart deal with this season's unprecedented record breaking rainfalls in France. The courtyard wall of the chateau grand salon is getting water damage and Patrick and Stuart work to remediate the issues.
Don't forget to check out our "3rd Advent before Christmas - Advent Sundays at Chateau" special episode this Sunday, December 17. It will premiere right before ‪@chateaudelalacelle‬ in the same time slot as all of our last year's 4 Advent Special Episodes at 19:30 Central European Time. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Gutter cleaning is oddly one of the most disgusting, and amazingly satisfying chores when the water starts flowing down the downspouts. Patrick- you get the hero award for taking that shower on camera. BTW- I like your wellies. What brand are they?

Oh my, I feel for you both with this unexpected flooding. You are lucky to have that ladder and health to get up and clean out the gutters. I know of people who have had leaf protectors here, but they say the leaves still get in. My neighbor is an older thinner man who climbs like a monkey. He does our gutters without us asking. I am grateful for him. Patrick, you had a great attitude when you got your compost shower. I would have sworn the big ones. I, too, am not afraid to get my hands dirty. I find it satisfying. I hope Nessa didn't get the diarrhea afterward. I also hope your sinus and bronchitis get better soon. Drink some lemon ginger tea with honey. Stuart have a lovely time back in the USA. I will see you on Sunday. Take care both.❤

Hi Patrick and Stuart, I feel your pain about the leaves in the gutters and downspouts. We have only one gutter but it is 40 feet long catching rain off of a flat roof. Rule #1, Never build a flat roof in the North East. Rule #2 Make sure you have plenty of 5-gallon buckets from Home Depot when the roof leaks. At least your roofs are pitched and slate. There is no way to repair the flat roof so the room will be demolished and rebuilt with a pitched roof. Until then, we have been lucky when we've entertained and not had a leaking roof over a dinner table. Keep up the great work. As you can see, we're a few weeks behind but will be catching up soon. People in rural areas that rely on water from the gutter can't use leaf guard as it blocks the rain from running into the downspout and into the cistern. With Leaf guard the water runs right over the gutter.

To protect the gutters, you can loosely shape maleable chicken wire to put in them--sort of a flexible wire tube that runs inside the gutter. The wire keeps the leaves from blocking the gutters and lets the water get through to flow into the gutters. The leaves still have to be removed from on top of the chicken wire in the gutters, but not as often and no threat of blockage.

I can attest to the challenges of keeping gutters and downspouts clean and free of debris. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go out in the pouring rain to unplug the downspouts because the rain is pouring over the clogged gutters. I feel your pain! But once cleaned, I do take delight in seeing the water flowing again. You didn't mention it, but I'm guessing the debris you pulled out of that clogged downspout must have been very stinky. Yuck. I'm glad to see that you've kept your sense of humor and can laugh about this unexpected project. 🥰

Patrick and Stuart - I can't get the Murano chandlier out of my mind because of its "pink" edging. Pink or magenta you did so well to use the same colour in the wall paper. Not all pinks play well together. The thought that enters my mind are the colours of the glass flowers other elements in the fixture. I can see you using them when selecting flowers for the room or other decorative accessories like a desk set for a writing table, lamps, picture matts - maybe even as secondary colours in rugs, curtains or curtain tiebacks. The place is an inspiration. Loved today's gutter worked - I only have three on a 1920's house and am able to clear downspouts by fishing a garden hose through the pipe for two of the three. The third however requires dismantling the downspout and occasionally digging-up a pipe to the dry well. It's not a pleasant task. Looking forward to seeing how you clean the pipes leading from the chateau to your "dry" moat. Best wishes.

Gee wiz guys, that was alot of gunk, but the walls inside really freaked me out! 😱 I hope you've managed to disconnect the electric system entirely that's in this room, and remove the fuse, bc you never know with these old houses if there's a live wire somewhere in the walls (remember they found some at Lalande) and that would be lethally dangerous with the European high voltage system! ☠️ You'll need to have some serious assesments made by licenced people before strategising what to do and in what order to make the room safe and healthy long term. I'm amazed the floor hasn't suffered worse damage tbh. If that's the condition in one downspout, imagine the constipation in the rest of them, in even less obvious places! Important work, planned or not, this stuff is w a y more important than any Xmas decorating and banal content, this is the real stuff! Bravo on a tough, gunky day of good work! 👌❤ Oh, and your flower beds will be happy for the extra composr this spring too! 🙃

My daughter and I moved into an apartment that had just been renovated. The complex had just paid a company to clean all of the gutters, there were a lot of trees. They didn't clean out the backside of a couple of the buildings, ours was one. It had done a lot of raining at that time. When we went out our back door it was like a water fall. And the rain had started pouring down the inside of the walls. We were on the bottom floor, which was great because we had a patio and yard. However all of the rain going down the inside of the walls flooded our living room and the brand new carpet. Plus we had wooden bookcases and wooden tv stand and some other things. It came 5 feet into the room. It was horrible.

So glad Patrick could laugh about his shower! Wow, what a job! You know you have to do it, and you keep on going, but Patrick must have been exhausted by the time you got the gutters cleared. I'm with you on the gutter guards, they won't work (and I'm sorry, they're ugly). Somewhere in the gardening/fencing department of some store in France, there has to be a stiff wire mesh that is still flexible enough to be cut and folded, and maybe interwoven, into a rectangle that would fit inside the gutters above the downspouts, and extend a little to each side, preventing the leaves from going in. If you could find something like that within reasonable cost, you could put it inside the tops of the gutters also, to keep the leaves out of the bottom of the trough and make cleaning easier. I'd ask your neighborhood farmers if they know of something you could use (and you might find someone you can hire to do it for you whose done it for him/herself at a reasonable cost and save yourself the trouble!). You'd still have to clean the gutters annually, but you could bid the showers goodbye!

I saw the outside walls have a cement-socle about 50 cm high, intended to keep water out. Common renovation-procedure in France in the 19 sixties to eighties. But since these buildings do not have a basement, humidity is climbing up in the walls and the cement prevents them from drying out. The missing chalk-render over the cement is an indicator for that. Have the cement removed, let the walls breathe again and the problems with humidity will minimized. Worked at my property in Burgundy 👍🏼

Yes they do and we are already aware of it. We want to remove that when the weather is right for repairing and replacing the lime render. Thanks.

It’s been the same here in the uk. We didn’t have to clean out any gutters but our pond overflowed and about half an acre of our garden was underwater and at the front of our house on the drive the water was right up to the entrance. We had to use a pump to drain the water into the field next to the house. My husband said he’d caught fish in shallower water!!! Brave of Patrick to go up that ladder. Hope it all dries out soon xx

I live in an old home with a number of old oak trees around me so I can relate to your plight. I found a good compromise for gutter guards. Get a roll of 1/2" galvanized metal caging material, it'll be enough to do your whole chateau and outbuildings, so well worth the cost. Measure and cut the appropriate width, be sure to add an extra inch or half inch to allow for a small dome effect. The length will be determined by the width of the roll you buy. Pinch to fit in and forget. Now this does not mean you forget all about the gutters but this will only need a once a year attendance. 🎅 Fröhliche Weihnachten

You poor buggers! We have tropical cyclones hitting Queensland at the moment, which is translating into some well needed rain for Tasmania. But that state is flooding and in a state of emergency with evacuations. When you showed the video of your gutters I wonder had you thought about getting some 'gutter guard' for them? When we built our house out here in the wilds of Tasmania, even though we cleared the area around the house of trees, still an awful lot of leaves and debris seemed to make their way into our gutters to block them. We invested in some tightly woven mesh fabric that is designed to fit the gutters and prevent pretty much any thing other than water from getting into your gutters. I can safely say it was some of the best couple of hundred we ever invested. There are companies that do it, but naturally there is a diy version. And we choose this one from Bunnings Hardware and I can not say it has let us down, it has been operating without a problem for nearly 17years now. So a great investment. Oh I just heard you say, that you had had some gutter guard before, but I was wondering, was this the flexible fabric, that can be fixed inside the gutter?? Maybe you can't get this in France anyway, which is a horrible shame, boo hoo. I guess its yearly gutter tube cleaning for you guys.

Greetings from Normandie. Gentlemen, you need to fix the render on the exterior walls BEFORE any interior renovations. I cannot stress this enough! You not only have concerns with your guttering, but broken render will allow moisture into your walls causing even more problems with damp inside. Unless you fix the exterior, your interior is not safe.
