Recording your acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time with only one microphone is not only possible - it can sound really good!
The key is to understand what type of microphone to use and where to place it.
In this video I show you exactly what gear you need to pull this off and we test a few different microphone placements so you can hear the difference just a few inches can make.
The key to a balanced guitar and vocal recording with one mic is getting the height and distance right and I'll show you how to get that optimal placement.

is it just me or was the balance of the first try, with the mic closer to the mouth better? I fell like the voice is a little quiet with the Final mic placement...

I'm with you Gehirnfehler. I liked the balance when the mic was up by his mouth. I did want more low end on the guitar with that placement though. I'm more of a "Vocals-way-out-front" guy though.

I love this. Thanks Graham. It really gets to the heart of recording songs that makes sense to me. The notion of somehow recording a drum "track", then a bass track, then a guitar etc. just seems contrived. Certainly, I do understand overdubs and that but to capture the energy of a performance you need the "performance" to be there first. So much "musak" sounds too mechanical to me and therefore less appealing. I like to hear that vibe or groove from the players playing which is the only thing I would comment on about trying to be your own band. Without the OTHER players interacting together it loses that creative spark that USED to be the hallmark of great music. When you heard the Temptations or The Who it was that "sound," that interaction in the blending of the musical talent and inventiveness that created those songs. People now seemed more focused on recording technique and creating new sounds or plug in usage than actual songwriting and "hitting the note" that the Allman Brothers used to talk about. It's hard to put emotion into a perfectly timed, perfectly tuned medium. It's just not human. It would be like trying to paint a Picasso from a paint by numbers kit. So keep up the good work Graham your info really helps make the process easier and more natural. Peace Brother!

I've stumbled on a good mix using a small Samson desktop USB mic sitting on my desk so it's guitar level, but I point it up toward my face. I started out doing it just out of convenience to catch an idea quickly, but I like the results. I agree with those saying the first take with the mic closer to the mouth was better. Good info in this video though.

How do you not get any noise when recording? I am a newbie to recording and what is driving me crazy is the static noise/hum/hiss that I get. It is there when plugging in directly or through a mic. I have a SM57, older Presonus Audiobox and passive pickups in my electric and acoustic guitars. Is there noise gate that you apply before posting those to KZfaq, or do you get that clean signal from the start?

Connecting the guitar to the interface too will give you more flexibility, you can focus a bit more on the voice and bump the guitar a bit using the track recorded directly from it. Of course it is about taste and trial and error...

a good quick suggestion for the common bedroom singer/acoustic recording. the room echo was what I heard in this video, it increased as the singing got louder which makes sense. great stuff... fix the room some more, one mic and placement can work!

This goes back to early studio engineering. Placing everything in correct position to the mic when more than one source is recorded. Although I'd probably do a 2 mic recording so each source can be balanced. This video is very good if you're only limited to one mic..

oh what a great video this is! thank you soo much! this advice is exactly what I needed I've been using the Scarlett Studio solo for almost a year now, have experimented with recording guitar+vocals into one channel, as well as separately to get a more balanced sound, cause I was never all too satisfied with the sound quality of recording it all into one mic. so now I'm excited to take your advice. :)

I love doing this! I've tried it a few different ways, but most recently used my rode nt2a with a close sm57 for a bit more body to the guitar. I find playing this way captures more feeling from my performance. I just recorded a cover of Audioslave's Like A Stone this way and I'm really happy with the results. Looking forward to hearing more of your tips on this.

I have thought about this method a lot and there is another solution where you get the best of both worlds all be it with more work in the recording process. The idea is to get the best performance emotionally and technically. So I researched this and came across 1rst. Record the track you said with one mic getting the guitar and vocal over and over until you get the best performance then 2nd use that performance to rerecord the guitar and vocal separately exactly just perfecting the two separate tracks. So you are basically using the best track as a scratch track. Then you will have two clean separate tracks to play with in the mixing process. There is also a technical way to get rid phasing if you record acoustic with 2 mics with setting pre delays but I won’t go into that here.

I was watching this again, and had to stop at 4:09 to say… I’ve listened to HUNDREDS of unknowns on KZfaq… and regardless of their skill level technically, they’re almost ALL missing the ability to write a good song… meaning, the lyrics are great AND the vocal melody is right on. This song that you’re performing here for us… is among the best I’ve heard on here. That RIGHT THERE proves to me that these recording techniques are necessary… but the songwriting is SO MUCH MORE NECESSARY. And I’m talking about everyone from 0 subs (where I’m often the first because why leave without giving love?) and all the way up to 1M subs sometimes! And everyone is between. Production is great.. vocals are cool.. instruments are great… But the song SUCKS. Your song instantly gets stuck in my head without me having to have an immediate emotional reaction or some kind of culty connection to the song or music. Yeah. Right on.

@Franksdad_deanmartinonrepeat

Pretty sure that’s called direct input (I think?) and I think it really comes down to preference. Plenty of people have made records going straight into the interface, but some think it takes away from the warmth and tone your amp gives. I think with plugins and how advanced the daws are nowadays, it’s really not too much of a difference. I’d say whatever sounds good to you, go for it

If I understand the issue correctly my process is to record them both together with the mic wherever you want it forget about leakage spillage phasing whatever placement and then replace the two separate elements replace the guitar part with just playing the guitar part on a separate track until you've got it perfect with a wonderful sound then we record the vocal separately on a separate track with all sorts of separate processing and you don't have to worry about Rune treatments it's the same room you can change rooms even you can make it you know I don't quite understand the the amount of volume I'm hearing on the internet on this topic cheers good luck to everyone

What do you do if you get an awesome take but then need to get some separation between the guitar and vocals? Say for instance the guitar was too loud in a part of the song where your voice was softer. Can you use an EQ fix, or are the frequencies too overlapped/intertwined? Maybe that's a case where the prerecording testing has to be right? There is no way to separate it later.

Can I just simply plug the 1/4 inch cable from the guitar to the Input 2 infront of the interface and set it to instrument, together with the XLR Cable plugged in to the Input 1 for vocals, thus simultaneously recording separate tracks of vocal and the instrument into the DAW?
