How to Fix SD Card Not Detected / Showing Up / Recognized on Windows 10/7/8
There are several possible reasons that might trigger this issue of SD Card not detected, such as Poor Connection between PC and SD Card, Outdated SD Card Drivers, Damaged/Corrupt File System on SD Card, or Missing Drive Letter for SD Card. Fortunately, it’s not one of the critical issues and can be fixed easily. So, let us quickly take you through some workable solutions that will help you fix the “SD card not showing up” issue in Windows 7/8/10.
Solution 1: Check SD Card on Another Device
When your SD card is not reading, the first thing that you should do is to test the SD card on a different device. Testing your card on a different PC/smartphone would explain if you’re dealing with a damaged SD card or not. In case other devices are successfully recognizing the SD card, try replacing the SD card adapter you are using.
Solution 2: Change the SD Card Drive Letter
Step 1: Press Windows+X and click on “Disk Management”. Alternatively, you can open the Run dialog box and type “diskmgmt.msc” to open Disk Management.
Step 2: Right-click the SD Card partition and select “Change Drive Letter and Path”.
Step 3: Click “Add” to assign a letter to the SD Card.
Solution 3: Run CHKDSK and Fix SD Card Errors
Step 1: Launch Command Prompt as the Administrator. You can do this by typing “cmd” in the Run dialog box.
Step 2: Once you’re in the CMD window, execute the CHKDSK command, i.e., chkdsk H: / f. Make sure to replace “H” with your SD card’s letter.
CHKDSK will scan the SD card for bad partitioning and will automatically fix the issue.
Solution 4: Update SD Card Drivers
Step 1: Press “Windows + X” and click “Device Manager”.
Step 2: Expand the “Disk Drives” option and right-click the SD card driver.
Step 3: Click “Update Driver” and the system will automatically start looking for the most suitable drivers.
Solution 5: Use an Antivirus to Check for Malware Attack
If none of the previous methods helped you and the SD card is still not showing up Windows 10, your SD card is most likely dealing with a malware attack. In this case, you can install a third-party Antivirus program to detect and remove viruses from the SD card.
Bonus: How to recover data from corrupted SD Card?
Step 1: Connect SD card and get Recoverit launched and select the SD card’s location.
Step 2: Tap “Start” and it will start scanning the SD card for deleted files.

None of these solutions will work if you insert the SD card and absolutely nothing happens but in the beginning of the video you stated that these solutions could fix that problem because it was in your list of possible problems. You can't scan a card that's not showing on your computer, you can't re-assign a drive letter for a drive that isn't showing that it even exists. None of these solutions are even possible if the drive isn't showing in the computer.

yeah this is my issue. I'm using a USB card reader and I've tried a couple other micro sd cards and they all read fine except for the one card that made me find this video. The other cards appear normally in "My Computer" however the one I'm having difficulties with, appears greyed out as if the computer detects a device is in the drive but cant read or access it. I attempted each solution in the video but alas none of them work. Even tried formatting but that doesn't work because the computer can't read or access the card :(

Here is my tip: Most card readers have a switch on the left side (see the grey switch on the side at 6:57). Just move it down and insert once, then move back to the original up position and reinsert. Only this worked for me after trying various solutions for an hour, so maybe it could work for you too.

After a long time, and checking out the smaller SD slot, I realized that one of the pins of the lector was damaged, so it wont ever work =(

Your first advice, of making sure the SD Card is not loose, actually fixed my issue. My Phone SD Frame is broken and sometimes after inserting it into my phone it doesn't settle in perfectly. After securing it with a layer of adhesive tape, it was fixed. Many Thanks.

Hi there. Thanks for the video. Well, I finally made it to the disk management and when I look below, It shows disk 0, which is the hard drive for the computer and below it, it says disk one removable and a letter (D) beside it and says no media below it. For some reason it is just not recognizing the card, but it does recognize the card in a way. Because when I pull the card reader out containing the 32 gb SD card, it disappears. The USB works because it shows my thumb drive when I plug it in and it comes up in the Disk Management and shows the size. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks.

i just updated the software, and I've been watching one video earlier and after that all my files on sd card are gone (even the sd card) .. i removed it on the tray and tried to reboot but nothing happens. it doesn't showw "preparingg sd card"

Above all else, make sure your laptop is fully updated. Non of the software fixes were working, so I was going to start buying USB SD drives. I was at a loss. I then went to check the time and see if I could make it to a store and noticed that Windows was pending updates requiring a restart. Needless to say, I restarted the computer and retried in a final last ditch effort. It worked! With that said, it was still very informational very helpful. I learned a lot and I think I could assist if an altercation with an SD card occurred. Thank you for making these troubleshooting videos!

PLEASE HELP!!! Great tutorial. However, I was not able to recover the data on my SD card so far. Just purchased the program and run it on my laptop. On the SD card driver selection, it says "Lost 1 partition", however it also says that I still have over of 29GB of data on the SD card. The most annoying thing during the scan is that about every 2-3 minutes it pauses and brings this window by saying: "there are many bad sectors in the disk that scan cannot continue. It is recommended that you restore the currently scanned files asap", and it's only 2% of all scan complete. Yet, I don't see any files listed to Recover. Please HELP...!!!! I need some advice on what to do. I need to recover this data. I would really appreciate your guidance on what to do next. Thank you

What do you do if the built in SD card reader (desktop tower) works perfectly in a Windows 7 installation (separate boot) and in a Windows 10 installation it disapears shortly after boot (like a minute or so) and isnt even there in the device manager after that ?. If the card is inserted and the computer is booted it is recognised and i can access the files, but the drive and filewindow just disapears shortly after that. Its obviously not a hardware problem since the hardware is exactly the same, but something related to Windows 10.

I had another go at this today and if you check view hidden devices it shows up as "Genereic storage device USB device" but it shows code 45 which means that its not connected to the computer, but it clearly is and still works perfectly in Windows 7. I can get it to work perfectly in Windows 10 if i disconnect and reconnect the card readers connector to the motherboard and it will work until the computer is rebooted then its the same problem, it disappears after about one minute (the computer even makes a sound then). Opening the desktop tower and disconnect and reconnect the reader to the motherboard is clearly not a solution of course.

Can you advise on issues with SD cards used in the car infotainment system? I have a VW Golf mk7. I’ve been using the same SD card for music for the last 12 months with no issues. However, I took the card out to add more songs last week (which I’ve done many times before) and the system now says ‘unable to read SD card’. I’ve changed the format and it’s still not working. I’ve also tried other SD cards which previously worked and now do not. All of these work fine on my laptop, just not in the infotainment system. I’m baffled.

So what do you do, when you know the port is good (other cards detect just fine) but when this one in question is inserted, Disk management hangs, windows explorer hangs, and programs that access the file system hangs. Pull the card back out, and windows explorer unhangs, disk management unhangs and everything goes back to normal. Plug the card back in and everything hangs again. It's not a new card, its 128gb in size (and its authentic) It's about 8 months old, and has not been accessed for about 6 months.

It has never worked to simply pull things out and plug them back in for any computer I have owned. If Windows 10 cannot detect one camera card it probably means it cannot detect other camera cards until after another update.

An interesting problem I discovered was that some of the devices I had plugged into the other USB ports were using too much power. When I removed all the unneeded USB connections my SD card reader suddenly started working again.

Extra tip: I would recommend opening it with Rufus and formating it to non-bootable. I had issues with SD cards (and pendrives) after they were formatted to bootable drives - they wouldn't be properly recognized by windows afterwards. Would only be able to reformat them to non-bootable with special software like Rufus (that's meant to create bootable media).

A question: Dell Chromebook detects external SD card, USB drives, but in the Settings the option called "External Storage Preferences" unavailable in "Storage Management". Does that mean it is not supported? Checked online many websites, KZfaq, couldn't find anything related to that menu option being unavailable. Thanks

Yes, unprotect supposedly helps recognize it sometimes. Then adding files or working with it and pc knows to expect it due to it being added to its registry.

Ok Michael , ive got a sd card has always worked brill , now nothing . does not even show regardless in all 5 ways of your video. yes it may have virus in its information but if shows as nothing there at all , as if it is missing. cleaned contacts tried diffrent devices. not that i would want to format it but if it does not even appear, I have no option to do anything. have you heard of this before. all files on sd card are Mp2 for my Filmora video editing for doing youtube videos, so if i put in a camera or device it should play regardless of the drive letter. But when i try I get nothing at all . any ideas thx

That's not the point, the method of changing the drive letter can't be done since the whole point is the drive isn't showing up. So this method isn't actually a method for this purpose to begin with, which makes many of the other methods un-usable.

@@TheMunkeeBone I think the card has become unusable due to a hardware issue like a spike or might have run its course. Replacement only would be the solution as the card cannot be accessed at all. It's as good as no card. 😔

Hi Michael, I've got an issue with my micro SD card not being recognized by my PC or laptop. I've been through this video, nothing helps. The fault is NOT the card readers OR the adapter for either PC or laptop. I've tried the card readers 0n both PC and laptop with other cards, they're both working fine. I've tried changing the micro SD card and using the same adapter/readers. Other cards work fine (I can read/write to other micro SD cards). I've checked the connections on the micro SD card, it does not appear damaged. The card is a "SANDISK 64GB". For some strange reason the card DID appear once on device manager. My PC said the card needed to be formatted but gave the size as 32GB. I didn't format the card, I ejected it then put it back in, but it's back to not being seen. Any advice? I'm feeling this card has had it?

Hey when I did the chkdsk method it said this: Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges or the disk may be locked by another process. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode and make sure the disk is unlocked. My Sd card doesnt show up at all you know how to fix this?

So is there anything I can do when I bought a used 3ds system and I had to buy a different sd card since the old one was gone. Now this new sd card obviously doesnt have the fat32 system

I bought a sd card for my rr evoque with a different vin. My 2017 car never came with one. Card I have had maps and is updated but again with a salvaged rr. Any way to get in the card to change the vin so my car can recognize

When i run the chkdsk d: /f command, it gives me "cannot open volume for direct access." - The computer recognizes that there is an SD card there, but telling me theres nothing on the card. However when I open the card on my cousins apply laptop, it runs no problem.

Hi, I'm trying the assign a letter option but how do I know which one is for my SD card? All I see is my Local Disk C: drive and my device manager only shows one drive as well.

Choose any letter that isn’t being used by your current drives.

Hi Kamrey, please assign any letter to drive except letter "C". The SD card will not be displayed as Local Disk.

i took pictures with my sd card all day then as i was taking them i could see them on my camera but hears the weird part.That afternoon i went to uploaded to my mac laptop but before i did i wanted to check one last time when i went to look at the pics on my camera the my camera read No Images. so based on your video im assuming i have physical damage on the sd card or something is wrong with my Canon 80d. please help.

hi man. i have an SD card 64gb and as i format it , shown as 58-59gb, i see its about the 1000-1024 "problem". So my question is that i need to fit in that memory card an image thats for raspberry pi3 game pack system. As i click properties in that image i see its 58.6 GB (63,020,466,176 bytes) but when i try to write it, it cant fit in the memory card. What i suppose to do? The image must not the problem, propably he has released it, he use it.

what's weird is my pc has a sd card reader on it, and when i try to go into the disk management thing, there's only a disk 0, some other options for it and windows C, but there's no other disk 1 2 and 3, and not one that says removable disk, i'm trying to see if i can figure out how to add one i guess maybe that would work

I actually tried formatting my SD card more than 10 times, yet unfortunately the issue is still present. My real problem is that the video still plays BEFORE I transfer it into the SD card but AFTER I transferred it, the video doesn't play anymore. Plus, the transfer speed is just a miniscule 355 kbps on average so is it possible to solve this issue (as well as increase the transfer speed)? The SD card is a white Sandisk 128gb & I've been dealing this problem for months.

Hi there, thank you for your question! Check the file system of the SD card: If the file system of the SD card is corrupted, it can cause issues with transferring files. You can try formatting the SD card using the FAT32 file system, which is compatible with most devices. To do this, insert the SD card into your computer, right-click on the SD card drive, and select “Format”. In the “File system” dropdown menu, select “FAT32” and click “Start” to begin the formatting process. If the issue persists, it could be due to a faulty SD card. You can try using a different SD card to see if the issue is resolved.

keep downloading new photos off my memory card using a card reader/ plugged into the MacBook. Then suddenly It doesn't read the latest ones off it. Nothing changed, and I can see them on the cam. Strange

My problem is there is no recognition that a card is in the reader slot or a brand new USB3 card reader is connected. When I first plugged the USB3 in with an SD Card it didn't work, I re-started the laptop it worked. Next time it didn't work and hasn't worked since. So I can't use an external drive for re-start. the Laptop is 3year old Lenovo Yoga 500.

My problem is that even the disk management or the minitool partition wizard isn't showing that anything if connected! Card reader driver doesn't update, or it say windows was unable to install...

Well nothing here helped me ... I'm starting to think that the mini sd card is done. It is kind of recognized at first but then it just dissspiears. It doesn't shows up in the disk manager nor in the device manager. And even more I cannot execute chckdsk or a virus analysis because it is not shown anywhere HELP !

Hello there. It seems that i have encountered an error, when I used the command prompt trick it said that The type of the file system is FAT32. Cannot read boot sector. An unspecified error occurred (666174766f6c2e63 d7). Can I get some help here? The pictures on my sd card came to a total of 9.79Gb.
