Next step in the Dana 60 build is the pinion install. How do we know the right pinion depth, and how do we set the right preload on the pinion bearings?

Just did a kingpin 60 and dana 70 rear, new gears bearings E-lockers , a lot of work to get to get them right... Im a retired Gm tech ... used to GM axles... spoiled ha ha.....

I actually appreciate you showing us the setback in the process when it comes to the bearing preload shims, that helps anyone looking to do this job because they get to see what might not go right the first time through.

Great job, that rotational torque will change with gear oil on it but as long as you towards the center of spec you'll be fine.

Eric, I have to admit that my respect for you as a mechanic increases each time I watch you fix, repair or replace something! After watching for over a year I have seen the things you do to “Make it right” and take the time to “Do it right! A lot of mechanics take shortcuts that make the job go faste,r but may damage the integrity of the repair and cause an early failure. Good job, no great job!

Nice if you are doing them all day and know the right shim to fix it :o) I have spent many an hour shimming stuff up.

Cant wait to see how you plan to fix the spring bolts from breaking again. Lateral arms might be better
@ronaldgentry99233 жыл бұрын
He said they seem to last a couple years before they break, So he is just going to replace those bolts every year as normal maintenance.

Crush sleeves for pinion preload are pretty common and easier than shims.

@@offroadrecoveryteam I had a 1350 spicer slip with a long slip stub and because my yoke on my Dana 60 is a 1310 it's got a conversation u joint in that was hitting the pinion I had to grind down pinion and yoke and some of pinion nut just so it wasn't clicking
@offroadrecoveryteam Жыл бұрын
I see, I switched to a 1350 yoke for the 60.

THATS WRONG!! I love your videos and have learned a lot, but now I am going to share some knowledge with you. The new g2 pinion, that isn't the same mark as on an OEM Dana Spicer gear set. (they don't do the variation mark.) You would need an expensive pinion depth gauge to use that number. You are going to need to do the guess and check method and pattern the gears. Make some setup races to make teardown and reassembly easier.

I missed the part where you oiled the bearings before installing the pinion and measured rotational torque, sorry.

Only noticed now that you left handed. They say us lefties are more intelligent than right handed people. I do some dumb shit so that statement can't be true. I do know that lefties are more creative and more technically minded. (most the time anyway).
