We finish putting the new wrecker axle together, the Dana 60 in ready to be put back in the 4x4 tow truck. But first we take a break so Towbie the Jeep Gladiator can rescue a Grand Cherokee.

LOL I used to love people who wouldn't listen when I would tell them, "I am hooked up to the back, so I want you to steer into the ditch. The back of your vehicle is going to follow me, if you steer right, towards the ditch, your front end will pop right out. If you don't, I will drag you down the ditch until a culvert or something forces you out and your front end will likely sustain some damage." and then they'd cry about their bumper despite ignoring my warning. LOL

I have 4 trucks with these hubs, I bought a 50 pack of stainless allen head bolts for them, cost all of $10.. I got real tired of fighting with them, especially since they all had stripped out allen heads. Look forward to seeing the truck back together!

The bearing packer works better when filled with grease. Yeah I know the grease is stupid expensive now. An old man that taught me years ago when I first started 38 years ago in Northern WI said "loose bearings are happy bearings." Jamming those tappers together with that much load will kill them so you'll sure get the chance to repack them with that torque. Crank them to hard drag and back then nut off 1//8 to 1/4 because loose bearings, are happy bearings. The gasket sealer is meant for "parallel surfaces with 0.015 max gap. That cap isn't that. So many different materials and applications today I spend way too much on that crap at my shop and it's slathered on like it's free which it is to them.
@MegaDysart Жыл бұрын
I was always taught that tapered roller bearings shouldn't be loose, but they definitely shouldn't have any preload. So tight enough to take the lash out, but not tight enough to preload them because both too much lash and being preloaded will wear them out quickly.
@benmcghan92073 жыл бұрын
My experience you have to have a little play and wheel bearings for heat quarterback tighten down all the way turn a quarter of a turn out for the spindle nut then put the set washer then nut torque it to
@agentcrm2 жыл бұрын
Also, replace those grease fittings, if you're pushing that much around the outside they're worn out.

looks like Seatcover has really taken to working in the shop, and she looks the part in her black hoodie. As much as she does her part in the shop, I hope she gets her share of time behind the wheel too!

I know about rhe parts wait. We have to wait 8 weeks for a set a stock pistons for a 2010 challenger drag car. We only need one but they wont sell us just one. We have to buy a full set of 8. I guess we wont need to buy anymore for a while if we end up needing anymore
@haroldphipps34573 жыл бұрын
I'm betting your 8 week wait, turns into 16, because, race parts.

I've seen axles like this with brass bushings where you used the nylon ones. Would they be better or stronger. I'm sure they would cost more.
@roadrunner1893 жыл бұрын
The nylon ones are pretty tough, so it's hard to say. Brass does have a weak material, they might wear more . King pins in semi trucks use brass bushings though

24:30 next time instruct the driver to turn right instead of left. It might seem counter intuitive to some, but it's the best way to get out of a ditch when being pulled backwards like that. I think just switching to studs from bolts can help. I had the infamous loosening CJ hub bolt problem, and after some forum lurking, I switched to studs and never had a problem since. Not sure why that is. I have a situation like those hubs where I have cap screws that get locked in with dirt and mud so I just pack 'em with RTV after I tighten them and it seems to work for the most part. I just dig the RTV out of the head to loosen them up later.

@@fluke196c A friend of mine make that same observation when he watched the video. Probably the only advice I'd change is, if you think the towee is an unsure driver, just have them hold the wheels straight. That will help drive the vehicle back onto the road without the risk of popping out too quickly and them failing to correct the steering fast enough. Sometimes things happen too fast for some people with a yank strap.

@original post "I think just switching to studs from bolts can help. I had the infamous loosening CJ hub bolt problem, and after some forum lurking, I switched to studs and never had a problem since. Not sure why that is." I figured I'd try to look this up since it was fresh in my mind. I ran across an article talking about using head studs instead of head bolts. (side note: I also ran into articles that indicate that they should be called head _screws_ as a bolt uses a _nut_ and a _screw_ does not. All depends on where you are on the spectrum) Of the practice differences, one stood out to me that could explain the problem. Studs have more consistent torque holding ability because they stretch linearly and not torsionally (theoretically) because you are using a nut on them. A bolt(screw) will twist some as you are torquing it down and will invariably have some twist in the metal when you are done. This force will always be trying to loosen the bolt(screw). I think that explains the problem I was having. In the case of those hubs, when everything was new and tight, it was fine, but reusing old bolts(screws) in old hubs, maybe with a little more play than when they were new, works on the bolts(screws) and loosens them up.

Any reason you don't run two high steer arms and move the tie rod up for true high steer?
@brandonrichter69103 жыл бұрын
A couple reasons, first is money, he's on a budget as the videos fund this operation he has to choose what to upgrade strategically. Second is he doesn't really get into the nasty rocks and whatnot much so it's not really necessary. Hell I get into really nasty stuff and my tie rod is in the stock location steering 42s. I just see it as protecting my diff cover caus im too cheap to buy a plate one lol

I thought the Dana 60s head bearings for ball joints that must be the replacement
@roadrunner1893 жыл бұрын
There's a ball joint model, and a king pin model. There is bearing in the bottom side the top just has nylon busing
@Z_7323 жыл бұрын
So, those bottom kingpins don't have bushing/ seals between the housing and the knuckle?
@trevorsorg93473 жыл бұрын
There is a seal that is pressed into the inner C just below the tapered roller bearing, but no bushing. The bottom kingpin cap has a pin that goes up and runs through the center of a tapered roller bearing that spins when you steer. The upper kingpin's main purpose is to put preload on the bearing in the lower kingpin. The bushing and spring are what apply that preload. With big tires the plastic bushing can get destroyed and the preload can be lost on the lower bearing, causing it to be destroyed.

The torque wrench was pointless, of course the impact got them tighter than 80 ft/lbs.

You don’t want them tighter. You want them at their specified torque spec.
