Hey guys! It’s Hina Sheth at Rebalance. Today I want to talk to anyone who might dealing with rectal pain or any burning, itching or numbness in that area. Maybe you already saw a specialist because you thought it was a hemorrhoid or something they don’t find anything.
It could be a group of muscles in the pelvis called the Pelvic Floor.
What is the Pelvic Floor?
These are the two pelvic bones. They attach in the front to form the pubic bone and in the back to connect to the sacrum. The Pelvic Floor muscles attach at the front and the back of the pelvis and the muscles span all the openings in the pelvis.
If you’re having discomfort in the rectal area - or any area in this region - the pelvic floor muscles could be involved.
Why am I having pain?
If you’re dealing with a pain issue, you might have tensioning in these muscles. Within the tight muscles, you can get taut bands known as trigger points. Those trigger points can create pain locally or spread outward into the penis and scrotum for men and in the vaginal/abdominal area for women.
You can get tension in the muscles of the Pelvic Floor the same way you do on any other part of your body.
Why does this happen? There can be many different reasons. People can develop tension in the pelvic floor through daily stress and anxiety.
If you have had surgery, such as hip replacements, labral surgery or abdominal surgery, it could be a predisposing factor to creating pain in this area. Additionally, any bladder issue, stomach issue or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Endometriosis, vaginal or gynecological issue can create tension in this area.
What do you do about it?
Fortunately, there are physical therapists out there that work on pelvic floor muscles that can give you guidance on this area. You have to see a good pelvic floor therapist that is knowledgeable on treating this area. They need to be able to treat internally and externally.
