Short line industrial branch line using a red caboose complete with cupola! Indiana & Ohio Railway switching customers in Mason, Ohio using a caboose for a unique exempt railroad crossing. The unusual railroad crossing is explained in my previous video and This Is The Rest Of The Story! • Strangest Railroad Cro... First I catch the train heading towards a few customers at the end of the branch that needed switched. The caboose was cut off after the last crossing while the crew did the switching. When the train returned, the caboose was leading until they got to a siding in downtown Mason, Ohio. Here we see the caboose set off on the siding and the locomotive runs around the train to continue with the locomotive leading. This run was the last revenue freight run for the caboose. It was shipped to Lebanon, Ohio for its new private owner. I will update this video with info on the future use of the caboose when I learn it. The branch line in this video use to continue on into Cincinnati but years ago a few miles were removed and it is now 2 separate branches owned by I&O. In the 90s there was an effort to reinstall the track. I went to the public hearings and the public outrage was over whelming. In the end the railroad lost and the tracks will never be reinstalled. Homeowners complained that their new homes were built next to an unknown right of way and school buses would be in danger at the numerous crossings. Also, check out how old some of the sections of rail are. It is lighter stick rail dated 1898 in some areas! See the close ups in the video. Trains use 161.385 and sometimes 161.220 and 161.430. The caboose is on a spur in Lebanon decorated for the North Pole Express. That’s where we think Santa hangs out when the trains are running.

Ex-Pennsylvania Railroad line that ran through Blue Ash and on out to Mason. The biggest mistake ever made was removing the track from Brecon in Symmes Township out to the South side of Mason. That 4 mile section being removed causes a ton of extra miles for the I&O since they have to go to almost Middletown to get on the other end of the line and backtrack back to Mason. Last time I was able to catch a train on this line was about 2 years ago and they were using the genset locomotive. My grandparents lived in Mason back in the day when this line was still very busy until Penn Central went belly up in 1974. Used to see long freight trains on it all the time when I was a kid.

Great video! Very, VERY rare to see a caboose on a freighter anymore. I worked for a company that shuttled engineers and conductors around for CP, UP, and some other brands a couple years back and only once saw a caboose at the end of a freighter. And it was only there because it was being moved to a museum after refurb. I miss that job. Hours on the road chasing trains, in back area crossings watching those guys work, and getting to know those men who rustle the heavy iron as they move product across the continent. I'd be working right along side them if I wasn't so over the hill and worn out. It always impressed me as a very satisfying line of work.

That was so cool seeing that caboose. You don’t hardly see that anymore. Back when I started railroading in 1970 we always had cabooses, and we had 5 man crews on the SP and NWP RR. I ran for the CKR and the KSW in the 90’s and we only had 2 man crews with no caboose. Anyway thanks and I enjoyed the video. 👍👍👍❤️
