This story has a very interesting production history. When the Head of Arts and Culture at the BBC saw the original script for this, she told Grant, Naylor and the director to drop the episode because it would be too expensive to make on their budget. The only problem was they had just finished filming it, it was all within budget and it went on to win an Emmy.

@@DaviniaHill I've heard a similar kind of story involving her and the Pet Shop Boys in late 1987 or so. She went up to the duo at a Christmas party, and mentioned that someone had just got the Christmas number 1 with a cover of an Elvis Presley song - maybe they should have a go at covering it themselves next year? The No. 1 song she had heard was a version of "Always On My Mind"... by The Pet Shop Boys.

The 'bug was originally supposed to crash into an ocean, but the effects team said water is hard to do in miniature because it doesn't scale well, but lava is not only easy but looks amazing.

The episode was filmed at a wild west "town" in soggy old england and most of the extras weren't even actors just a bunch of cosplayers who built the town so they could spend their weekends there. So the fact their accents were even close was amazing.

The following story about the on-location shooting of the episode was told by Kryten's actor, Robert Llewellyn, at a convention and is presented from the depths of my memory so this should go well... Mr John-Jules and Mr Llewellyn have ridden horses before. They are familiar with how to ride and the dangers therein. Mr Christopher Barrie has never ridden a horse before. It has no steering wheel. No engine. None of the creature comforts he is used to in his automobiles. Mr Charles has never ridden a horse before. Mr Charles has no fear.... I shall now do a very poor impression of Mr Charles on a horse. "Hey, let's hit it and see what happens!" *frantic mimed riding towards the horizon*
@mattkleshener2629

Yeah, Craig Charles was such a troublemaker on set. He slapped the horse's backside and it launched off with poor Chris Barrie still riding it!

Fun fact, this is the (apparently) episode where Patrick Stewert discovered Red Dwarf. When he first saw it, he thought it was a ripoff of TNG, then he saw something that made him laugh (kryten getting hit by that sign as he's about to leave town) and it made patrick laugh (and stopped him from reaching for the phone to call his lawyer, which he was in the process of doing) This episode also won an emmy for it's special effects.

I remember a show about Red Dwarf a while back, they got to use these sets just by asking, and having only a certain amount of time to get the shots needed, if I recall it was freezing when they shot the western scenes. They were all owned by the BBC so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it, but still, try and do that today. Yet another fun episode. 😀

I have to agree with Paula's assessment, Kat, you look great. I especially like your "space" shirt. This is a very popular episode and won an international Emmy. One of the BBC execs read the script and gave orders that production should be cancelled, as she thought the script was too ambitious and would be too difficult and too expensive to shoot...only to learn that they had already completed filming and were into post production. Location filming was done at Laredo, a simulated Old West town in Kent. One of the things they had the most trouble with during recording was getting all of the bullets Cat shoots out of the air to all land together within camera shot. 🤠

In this impressive and big-scale episode, apparently one of the hardest things to film was something as simple as the shot where the two bullets that Cat/Riviera Kid shoots out of the air fall to the ground. There's a series of outtakes where they just couldn't stop them hitting each other and rolling off-camera.

One thing I love about the writing of this show, is the fact they consistently write Cat with cat-like traits.. beyond the obvious stuff, like attacking a bigger force (like a dog)... better make himself look big etc. btw.. sooner or later there is a subtle Bladerunner reference. You really should be sure to check it out if you haven't seen it, if for no other reason than because it's amazing.

There's some lore (i think from the books, though might have been a throwaway comment in an episode too) on Starbug on what it's made from. After major plane crashes, there's the trope of a lone dolls head that's unscathed sitting amongst the wreckage, so the designers of Starbug built it's hull from the same plastic and that's why it's so hard to damage...and can survive a dive into lava 😅

It should be clear to see why this is regarded not only as the best episode of series 6, but one of the best of the entire show, if not the best. Fantastic production values, great comedy, some great action scenes, a fantastic score, and of course the Cat's coolest alter ego, the Riviera Kid (Latin-flavoured guitar motif). Honestly, what's not to love? Also, to answer your question about Chris Barrie, he has done a lot of voice work, most notably on the satirical puppet show Spitting Image which he was a cast member on during the 80s. He had a particular speciality for impersonating Ronald Reagan, to the point where he did a vocal impersonation of the former President in two music videos around the same time ("Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "Land of Confusion" by Genesis), which no doubt explains his ability to do a convincing cowboy accent
