Rimmer’s self loathing is properly painful in this. Chris Barrie doesn’t just play it for laughs but finds proper venom & sadness in Rimmer. That and his spilt screen performance shows how good an actor he is.

In the Red Dwarf novels, in their version of this story, the reason Me² was meaner was he was the original snapshot of Rimmer from the moment of his death, whereas "our" Rimmer had changed from his time as a hologram with Lister.

I did not know that about the book, I assumed as much. The Second Rimmer is an older version of Rimmer one who was meaner before death, more so with Rimmer we see what he does when he gets to be in control he takes down to the military word written, never the spirit. First Rimmer is softer from his time dead and with Lister, so the older version can get the upper hand and is in control. Trying to out do himself and going to extreme lengths to keep on top of his own platform he raised himself. Which First Rimmer has now learned is horrible.

I think the key part of red dwarf is that they didn't just allow characters to have flaws, but built those characters around their flaws. Lister is lazy, The Cat is a narcissist, Rimmer is deeply insecure. Although their characters develop over the series, they never lose those traits completely, just build on them.

Originally, Confidence and Paranoia was intended to be the season one finale, but with production delayed by an electrician's strike, the writers decided to drop a story already written for the series that they thought was a weak episode and substituted Me2 instead. A good move, as it adds more dimension to Rimmer as a character and develops his relationship with Lister.

During the production of the second series, the creators asked the BBC not play repeats of the first series, as they felt it wasn't anywhere close to the quality they wanted. Everything from here gets better, from the sets to the comedy it all goes up, and then solidifies in the third series to become the show it was always meant to be.

They wouldn't have known if they were going to get a second series or not, so the stories had to be fairly contained. As the different series go on the storylines open up a bit more. Also the budget increases as they progress and became more popular, so expect a continuous rise in quality also.

This episodes shows how much of an impact Lister has already had on Rimmer. The new Rimmer was the version recorded, for lack of a better word, years ago, and therefore was unaffected by the events leading up to his death and beyond. And if you want something to indicate how low Rimmer's self esteem really is, it has to be those little headlines on the back of his door.

Most of the budget for series 1 went on the model shots of the Dwarf and the shutters. For series two they got a bit more money but also saved a lot by reusing the model shots from series 1 and dint have to build more shutters. I think the real game-changer was series 3 when they had enough cash to massively o prove the sets and record those tasty Star Bug shots.

I think, because my brain is a bit sketchy these days, in the book the reason why the Rimmers don't get along is the new Rimmer is a copy of who he used to be when he first came aboard Red Dwarf as they have their personality recorded when they come aboard. However, original hologram Rimmer is softer and not as course around the edges thanks to sharing a bunk with Lister and being alone in deep space with no one to answer to. The jump-squat scene hints at this as original hologram Rimmer is happy cutting corners. Great vid, thank you for doing Red Dwarf, I was a huge fan, i had t-shirts, keyrings and several copies of the Smegazine.

I did warn you last week, you were in for a wild ride this time. It's our first look at Arnold Rimmer's flaws, laid bare for all to see: his ego, his self-loathing, his need to tear down anyone and everyone around him, his inability to accept responsibility for his mistakes and blame others, and his cowardice (note how he only fessed up when he was about to die, or believing he is about to die) From here on out, Rimmer-centri episodes will be exploring _why_ Rimmer is the way is. It's also a spectacular display of Chris Barrie's ability to act with his nostrils. Any of the various talents the Cat demonstrates, quite often it's something Danny John-Jules was actually doing with no double needed

One interesting idea of why Holly decided rimer was the best fit to help keep lister sane instead of one of his friends is because friends confined for too long can fall out and if their relationship completely breaks down it could effect his long term mental health. Where on the other hand he never really got on with Rimmer and always had a goal to find new ways to annoy him, giving him that goal will keep him occupied and driven, and instead of a relationship breaking down as it's already quite rocky, it has a chance to develop in to a real friendship. Also if you're getting in to the series i highly recommend the books. they're written by the writers of the show and give so much more backstory and detail, a really fun read.

Chris Barrie is great in this episode. I really feel for Rimmer in his little monologue, you can hear the misery, shame and embarrassment in his voice, all too recognisable for anyone who's being mugged down memory lane. I think the DVD bonuses mention the BBC legally had to produce a new sci-fi show after cancelling Dr Who, because despite their contempt for the series and the shoe string budget, it was still their cash cow in licensing rights. Just like Red Dwarf ended up to be. The showrunners just pitched it as "a comedy show using existing sci-fi sets" to butter up those smeg-heads.

It was not going to go any further. BUT - the commissioning editor at the time, was on his way out, and in a last act of revenge he decided to saddle the BBC with a sure fire dud, and gave the green light for the second season. Red Dwarf want on to become a huge hit. Season 1 was very rough around the edges - but still good fun. Season 2 is then it gets REALLY good.

I've subscribed to you guys because of this, I hope you keep going. It's caused me to have a complete Red Dwarf marathon. I've seen most of the episodes a few times over the years but never watched series 11 or 12, which I'm on 11 right now.

I am so envious of you getting to watch Dwarf for the first time. Cannot wait to see your reactions to the rest of it. I’ve been lucky enough to attend the recording of two episodes! Keep at it, all the way.

What to expect from red Dwarf in the future? No spoilers, but the show takes every other sci-fi idea they can think of and adds their own spin on it.

They stayed on the ship because it was a new show and producers will never spend money worried it will crash and burn (Original Star Trek, they hardly went to planet and when they did everything was Californian desert and hills and polystyrene), Amazon being the ridiculous exception

The original series was hardly publicized at all on the BBC and it was the fan reaction that got the show noticed and the budget improved. The writers played into the strengths and quirks of their cast so the episodes continue to improve until the (IMHO) zenith at Series 5.

"You filthy piece of distended rectum" was such a great insult, that to this day, I still use it. Also, when you said at the end how all this explains why Rimmer is the way he is, made me want you to get to the "Ace" episode even more.

Hi Gals! About your question about the size of the cast. Uk sitcoms typically only have between 2-4 regular cast members and its quite rare for them to have say 6 or 7 regulars like Friends or Frasier. TV budgets here as I'm sure you've noticed are much lower than in the US

FYI, the cinema scene had some footage cut from it, where the two Rimmers are still feuding with the seating arrangement. This is why Lister picks Rimmer for deletion when it seems he picked Me2.

Definitely the best episode of the season. We have all felt out of place like Rimmer., and Lester's trick is awesome.

I'm looking forward to you two watching the next few seasons and seeing for yourselves which of Paula's predictions come to fruition... and (more importantly) how. No spoilers, but the series does continue to develop and it gets more and more dynamic as it goes.

I really like the British style of packing in a bunch of Entertainment into a series of 6-8 episodes. Trying to catch up with older American series like Star Trek at 26 episodes per series is such a big commitment and can drag on. I can't be alone because modern Netflix and similar style series seem to have taken on the shorter series format.

Having six episodes makes it easier to try out more shows . A second series soon follows if it's good . As with Red Dwarf it can then develop rather than have to rely on getting good audience figures immediately .Some of our greatest shows weren't an instant success .

So glad you you're enjoying your journey through this show; I think I said it before but RD was a huge part of my younger life, even if I did eventually fall out of love with it around series 7 and 8. S2 is pretty similar in style and scope to the first, but with much better stories and more character development.
