Red-shouldered Hawks are a medium sized hawk found in wetland forested habitats. Our Red-shouldered Hawk came to us in in 2016 as an orphan and with an undeveloped eye. Keep tuning in this week as we learn more about hawks!

Great video, i have about 5 in my neighborhood and one of them is always there to greet me when i get home from work. Theyll fly right in front of my car when im pulling in my driveway or be sitting on my fence, i just feel like theyre trying to say hi to me or something, an they absolutely love it when i mow my lawn, im sure because of the critters it brings up. I had 2 sitting on my gutter before and had to mow right under them and they just looked down at me, i could have reached up and pet both of them if i wanted to(which i never would, i dont want to disturb these birds, i just want to admire them, theyre amazing) they are my best friends. My girlfriend thinks im a bird whisperer or something because i always find one no matter where i go, i live in jacksonville, fl.

super informative man- you covered every topic we wanted to know about! we live in Hillsborough, NC in a development called "Falcon Ridge" on a street called "Talon Lane". It's a small development, out in the country, that at one time was the back-half bottomland of a still functioning family farm. We have a creek that runs thru to a old swampy pond that overflows into tha woods when we getta ol gullie washer. It's fulla cattails and about 2 zillion tree frogs and we got plenty a brushpiles too fulla mice and lizards...I say all that to say this- there aint a day goes by that we don't hear that famous Red-Shouldered call, or see them gliding, maneuvering so deftly thru the entangled branches just above the creekbed; or sitting patiently on a fence post overlooking acres of hay just waiting for the chance to strike. Beautiful, fascinating creations, indeed. But, I have always wondered to myself, "Who staked out this land our neighborhood sits upon? And did so long enough and well enough to know, that the only names suitable for the tract, were those making reference to its ancient and original inhabitants?". One day, I hope to be able to answer this family query. Until then, thank you for answering those questions that can be answered :)

She's very beautiful, I do have them fairly often in suburban indianapolis..I have noted the blue Jay's making the similar call.

It’s funny you mentioned the blue jay. I heard a red shouldered hawk in my yard. I looked up to watch a blue jay for a few minutes sounding like one. 😂

AWESOME!!! So glad I sighted her before hearing her call so I know it wasn’t a blue jay or mockingbird. 😅

Thank you for this. With mocking birds and blue jays around it's been difficult for me to identify these hawks. We also have other hawks in the neighborhood but they're larger. The other day, however, I walked out of the side door on my garage near my garden to find a hawk sitting just inches away from me on the fence there. I was really surprised that he didn't seem to be afraid of me at all. He was either after the many squirrels around or the spiny lizards that live in my garden. I took some photos of him and I believe he was a red shoulder hawk.

Very informative, but it would have been nice to see her wings spread. More identification tips.

Red-shouldered hawk are actually quite common in California. I wouldn't say that their population is small at all. There actually may be more in California than in Alabama. War Eagle!

They like to attack my friendly squirrels and chipmunks. I don’t like hawks at all. But I like to learn about them.
These raptors are native to this area! Meet our Red Shouldered Hawk!
