I thought it was butterflys not leaves. When they were doing the texting back and forth. I heard somewhere else representing the butterflys Alex gets now with Henry.

You might be right that it's butterflies and not leaves during that scene.

The politics of the movie, and Alex's involvement with the campaign was his Texas Memo. In the book it was his Texas Binder with the all the maps and the demographics, as well as the importance of having his mom hold a rally in Houston. The movie at least showed him connecting with POC and the working class and registering people to vote.

Good points! I remember in the book that his Texas plan was way more developed and fleshed out and was a much bigger plot point than it was in the movie but that obviously can be explained by having to condense the story to fit into the runtime. - Morgan
