Redcar is a seaside town in North Yorkshire, England. It sits on the North Sea coast and is a holiday destination for UK families looking for a great break by the seaside.
Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, Redcar lies 7.5 miles east of Middlesbrough on the North Sea coast.
Redcar occupies a low-lying site by the sea; the second element of its name is from Old Scandinavian kjarr, meaning 'marsh', and the first may be either Old English rēad meaning 'red' or OE hrēod 'reed'. Redcar originated as a fishing town in the 14th century, trading with the larger adjacent market town of Coatham.
Redcar's award winning flat sandy beaches stretch eight miles, south east and north west. In the northwest the beach runs past Coatham to the South Gare breakwater at the mouth of the river Tees. The distance between Redcar and Whitby is 20 miles. Distance between Newcastle upon Tyne and Redcar is 53 kilometers (33 miles).
ACCORDING to a survey by the Office for National Statistics, Redcar is the happiest place in the North-East.
This virtual walk walking tour of Redcar also features The Regent Cinema which is scheduled to be demolished and replaced by a brand new seafront cinema complex.

Thank you so much for this. So many memories from when I was a child. When I grew up and my first daughter was born I took her all the way from Chester to see the sea for the first time. I held her up and tried to say "That's the sea" .. but I choked and couldn't speak. Was and always will my special place .. and hers. 30 years later we took the granddaughter to do the same thing.

Often go to Redcar, park the car & walk to Saltburn have a bite to eat, then walk back to Redcar. Do a shop in Morrison's & have a look in the high street, then back home. The beach scene in the film Atonement was indeed filmed in Redcar, the Coatham Hotel was made up to look like a French chateau and wrecked army vehicles were on the beach opposite. More recently after some really rough weather the sea moved a lot of sand & uncovered the Petrified forest, people can view this at low tide in the sand near the Beacon. Tree stump & roots. Redcar is definitely worth a visit, more than just once.

I've never heard of Redcar in my life! I wouldn't of had a clue where it was before this vlog! What a nice Sea front walk! Love the Wind Turbines out in the Sea & the Artworks I liked the Table & Chairs Statute that you past Neil I've no idea what that was about. The old Cinema was definitely vintage what a shame they couldn't open it up again! Lots of interesting shops on the other side of the street. What a lovely warm day it was for you that day 2 years ago. Lovely to see this in the winter time👍😊

Spent a lot of time in Redcar 45/50yrs ago, lived in Scotland all my days, but my Dad belonged to Thornaby on Tees and had a lot of relatives there. I used to get the train down during the holidays and spent a couple of weeks in this area whilst school was off. Pacittos ice cream was always amazing, years ago they had ice cream vans everywhere

Was over there in September had fish and chips with mushy peas at the little caravan on the water front at the Becon, it was raining so we ate them in the bar and had a few beers that afternoon. We where over there a few years back Christmas time, got a picture of the wife standing on the wall on the beach, dressed in a long coat, gloves and a woolen hat it was freezing that day different to the weather we have on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Nice video again... Looks a clean spacious place.. It has a special interest for me as my grandparents on my father's side lived here before moving down to Nottingham I think in the 1930..40s...looking for employment.. They died long before I was born..my father also died when I was a few months old.. He having moved to Leicester.. So to me it was just tales of ancestors living somewhere up north called Redcar.. When I was young (too many years ago now...) we spent many a day on Redcar seafront. It was always a very popular holiday spot with folk coming down from across the border in Scotland, for some reason, so you’d always be hearing broad Scots brogues as you sat on the front, eating your fish & chips followed by a lemon top ice cream. The fish & chips were always very good because the shops got the fish direct from the boats, filleting it themselves, rather than the frozen stuff so many use now. And you couldn’t go to Redcar without having a lemon top from Pacitto’s - still can’t, I reckon, there’s probably a local by-law prohibiting it! We always ended our days in Redcar by queuing on the sands to buy a couple of live crabs from the boats, which my mum would take home and cook, and we’d have fresh crab sandwiches made with brown bread and butter for our tea the next day. These days you’d need to take out a bank loan to buy that much crab! It was also a given that you’d go along and have a look at “The Zetland”, which is the world’s oldest lifeboat still in existence, even when you’d seen the thing a dozen times before...It was a nice place, with some of the finest sands on the North-East coast, in those days. Like many such places it was neglected by the local council for a long period of time - give them credit, they’re trying to improve things now but it will doubtless take a long time get it back to anything like it used to be, after so long without any investment. Doubtless you’ll be poodling along to Saltburn-by-Sea next - do please film the cliff lift if you do, even more nostalgic!

It would have been in the mid 90's, and I was walking along Woodland Rd in Darlington, I don't know why but it was close to home and there I was, and a car pulled up. The door opened and a voice came out - "get in Chris". It was my dear friend Sylvia Pursey, and her daughter Helen. Well Sylvia was not someone to argue with so in I got. "Right Chris, were going to Redcar, I'm sure you'd like to go to the seaside" which was true enough, I was up for it so off we went. We walked along the beach, had an ice-cream (lemon top from Pacitto's. the de rigeur option), fish and chips, played some arcade games, rummaged on the beach for fossil oysters and ammonites, it was just a perfect summer afternoon. Happy days!

The original Pier in Redcar is long gone and the powers that be deemed the Beacon (supposedly a Vertical Pier) a good alternative, personally I think it's a bit of an eyesore, they should have called it The Marmite Pier you either like it or hate it - it was very controversial when opened. When I was a kid a day out to Redcar was premium and the beach was crowded but like a lot of British Seaside resorts, they are on the decline mainly because it's as cheap to get a chartered flight to Spain? Portugal than two weeks in the UK and of course the weather is more or less guaranteed in Spain and the like. Here, I have known the four seasons in one day, you never know what you will get - You obviously picked one of those lovely summer days. BTW The RNLI Station is the oldest or one of the oldest in England.

It's often cold enough for real penguins. The improvements cost a fortune so the Council Tax is equivalent to some London Boroughs. Don't forget Redcar Races of course, but the High Street is awful with dozens of empty shops, although it does have 4/5 supermarkets. The park is nice and the new Leisure Centre, but the "fresh air" is sometimes polluted by the nearby chemical works and the almost prevailing North Wind blows cold. Also the beach is often covered with seaweed and sea-coal . It must be the smallest town with two Railway Stations though.
@GimbalWalkTV
