This is how I made my wool shirt after watching several KZfaq videos. Special thanks to Dave @ wildernessoutfitters, Darin @ EastWoodlandSurvival, Joe @ Joe Addair, and Mike @ bushcraftbartons.

I'm really entertained at the fact that the dog is sitting on the couch while the man is crawling around on the floor! thanks for the video enjoyable and informative. thanks for the help

I had a seamstress make me a monks robe out of a couple of army blankets from the 1920s my parents bought back then. Wonderful! Cozy! With monks hood ...really soft and warm!

If you need more width in order to move more freely and not tear the shirt, open the side seams and sew in panels, say 4 inches wide, a strip from the arm hole to the hem; a panel for each side will make a much more roomy garment. Nice job! Thanks for sharing.

This is a great tutorial, to the point but laying out verbally and visually what you are doing. I really appreciate the optional add ons and the reasons why one might add them. Thanks for the video!

Always enjoy seeing DIY projects. Especially when folks adapt them to their own needs/circumstances. Pattern making, needle/thread, making decisions ---- skill development on multiple levels in addition to ending up with a useful item. Well Done. Thanks for sharing.

I have a few baja jackets myself. They are plentiful here in Southern California. I have always wanted one such as yours. I plan on making myself one from gray wool blankets I found in Harbor Freight. They are 80% wool the rest synthetic. Almost the same mix as the baja jackets. Only, I can live without the wild colors they come in. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Great move on the interior pocket and side leash holders. I have subscribed. Thank you sir!

I've been wanting to do one for two years. Now that it is done I have no idea why I thought it would be so hard. It was a great rainey day project.

Put in a couple of side slits to make it easier to kneel and sit. A hood is always the best option. In cold weather there is nothing better than being able to put up your hood. If you look at any of the 'traditional' clothing such as the Capote or even a cape they included a hood. You don't have to wear it but it's there when you need it.
@RedDogBushCraft9 жыл бұрын
A J Taylor Yes, what you said is true but the reason I didn't attach the hood, at least untill I try it out for a while is I normally use a good head cover when ever I'm out and this thing is so hot I'm not positive I need it. I do think a hood would be good for sleeping in my hammock and so far I'm thinking this will become my sleeping shirt. Still testing. I have another winter camp out this weekend. Temp should be down in the teens. That should be a good test. Thanks for the comment and the view.

Apologies! You DiD already think of the hood. I wasnt aware, the video had stopped before the end. I've got a similar garment, with some sort of a tunnel-string w/a stopper on either side near the bottom, to make it shorter, when I have to crawl on the floor.

Think you could do a double layered one? Those military blankets are about the thickest commercially available heavy melton wool fabric and those Filson cruisers have been outright unaffordable for a while. Would be the perfect homesteading skill to make those. I was just reading up on the old fur trapper capote coats and got the idea.

Mighty mighty mighty impressive....now you are a Jedi master of the BushCraft...lol. Seriously that is very impressive...if I only possessed the skills of the needle and thread, I would love to make me one too...yet I am too old to learn the ways of the Jedi and have to settle for tying the woolen blanket around my person...I would be just a Pig in a Blanket...lol. But darn good video...perhaps there is someone around here that posses the skills and a sewing machine...humnnnnn.

Question? I assume your just using reg thread not waxed thread?. How are you water proffing your seams, or are your not worrying about that?

not waterproof
@tramontane32395 жыл бұрын
Nice job, thanks for the vid.Sleeves looked a little short on the length, add a base layer or two under this shirt and the sleeves on the blanket shirt would get even shorter. Just speculating here, but am I correct.

... is it just my old device, or are you too far away from your microphone? I'm having to put my ear to the speaker to hear what you're saying, which makes it impossible to see the video ... - but otherwise: great job! I like it a lot. (a hood might be an idea for a next prototype?)
